May 11: Saturday excerpt: eye

I have way too many eye rolls in this book, but, oh well, it's not through edits yet.

According to research by the Havard School of Futurism, by 2030 bananas will officially be called bananum, and strawberries will be strawberrum, because the Large Lying Models will make us believe these are the right words. The researchers quoted Aristotle who said "If you tell a lie three times while drinking a town's water supply, it will become the truth."

Author copies arrived of this bulky anthology of African ghost stories. Now I can say that my story was published in the same book as the legend, Amos Tutuola!

Ever since I quit Google I've stopped receiving junk emails, used to come about 10 a day and would end up in promotions folder, or updates, or socials, which google created. Now, I get nothing. Only newsletters, some of which are industry related so I don't mind them.

I now use @protonprivacy The downside is inability to log into separate email addresses. Everything comes into one inbox. I use filters to organize each email in its own inbox folder, but its still a little clumsy, and even clumsier when I try to use Bridge and separate the addresses in Thunderbird, because @thunderbird doesn't handle the folders well and looks very cluttered. If Proton can fix this, it will be a game changer. Privacy needs to go with along efficiency for businesses.

A lot of trees got seriously damaged in storms last winter, and were chopped down as a result. Nice to see so many of them fighting back this spring, and growing magnificent hairdos in the process.

dilmandila,
@dilmandila@mograph.social avatar

@wendinoakland @eclectech I thought so too, and for a moment I believed you had photographed the angry spirit of the tree

dilmandila,
@dilmandila@mograph.social avatar

@eclectech @wendinoakland I think you'll get a happy face if you used a thin line for a mouth, but the gaping black hole seems to give a different kind of impression. Or perhaps if there weren't too many teeth, just one or two as I've seen in some comics.

But it's a fun image!

Yesterday, for supporting my robot film, I rewarded patrons with a stylized wallpaper of a pied kingfisher sitting on a leafless branch (looks like a stick suspended in air). The foreground, bird and branch, is monochrome, the background is pale yellow. (Okay, alt-texting has taught me how to describe images, you get the picture?)

I have finally finished a novel that I have been writing since 2017 (I think I am now done!?) so wondering what the way forward is. Agent? Big Five/Four? But I would really prefer a reputable small press publisher (maybe Big Small Press😁), so going to knock on doors again. If there is any you know that is open for submissions, I'll appreciate the tip.

It is a science fiction/fantasy story.

dilmandila,
@dilmandila@mograph.social avatar

@evilcookies98 I keep thinking of it but I am not good at marketing and with self-pub you have to keep marketing to make sales. I would rather someone else worries about that side of things

Looks like book submissions are becoming like movie pitches, with moodboards and character sketches and all that. I guess I should stick to working with indie press and small press publishers, just for a peace of mind, because the gatekeeperism of trad publishing is going up a notch....

I'm in the process of migrating from Google Workspace to Proton Mail, but I've hit a snag that might make me stick to Google. I have several email addresses for business, and yet Proton puts all emails in one inbox, which doesn't make any sense. So I'll get emails related to my writing in the same inbox as those for film, as personal emails, and as those for other work? I expected separate logins for each email.

Anyone knows how I can work around it?

dilmandila,
@dilmandila@mograph.social avatar

@dave I've heard its possible, and the work around, but it's not efficient. And I presume it's easy to miss emails....

dilmandila,
@dilmandila@mograph.social avatar

@dave Looks like it, though I have staff who monitor some of the email addresses and was hoping each would have a separate login and not be able to access other emails.

Let me look more into this split addresses, and also explore using Thunderbird, but it looks like you will still need one login account.

dilmandila,
@dilmandila@mograph.social avatar

@april This could work, but its not very efficient, and I was hoping for each email to have a separate login so that different staff could monitor different emails, it being a business.

I bet Hollywood scriptwriters are already plotting out stories of the traumatised Israeli soldier who goes into Gaza and shoots one armed person and saves a little girl from rubble and he has to live with the trauma of what he witnessed, but it will all be from Israeli military's point of view because, well, propaganda.

Hello Authors of Masto?

Short story collections. Strong theme, or just the best stories? Can a collection include nightmares and light-hearted stuff? (An experienced author says a good collection does not vary wildly in tone. But my stuff does).

what do you think as a reader, and what do you do yourself?

@bookstodon

PS I have some free on my website

dilmandila,

@stephenwhq @bookstodon Stories leaning towards a similar genre would be strongly recommended, or genres that compliment each other. If they are romance stories, then audiemce is likely to be readers of romance and may not enjoy if, say, you throw in a horror. If it is speculative fiction then you can safely throw in the sff stories, scifi fantasy horror..... I think
