Got my stool sample results back today.

They found H. Pylori bacteria which isn't necessarily a bad thing but could be the cause of gastritis or possible ulcers.

So they put me on a bunch of antibiotics... Which are making me quite sick.

@kura couldn't find anything about disabling SAMBA searching in the LG menu's. Did find a number of other "auto" options to turn off.

kura,
@kura@noc.social avatar

@tripplehelix interesting. I may have been mistaken.

I've not seen mine scan for SMB shares. How did you discover it?

kura,
@kura@noc.social avatar

@tripplehelix don't know... What are you using as a honeypot? Want to set it up myself and see if mine is doing it too or if I've somehow stopped it.

kura,
@kura@noc.social avatar

@tripplehelix I'll set it up tomorrow and keep an eye on the LG TV.

I'm fairly certain mine doesn't do much, because I can see what it's up to in my router logs and Pi-Hole logs. But I'm curious to see if it is trying to make HTTP requests elsewhere on my network.

That being said, it's on a VLAN which only contains the TV and Shield TV, and the firewall restricts it from any internal device that isn't Jellyfin.

kura,
@kura@noc.social avatar

@tripplehelix I stuck a honeypot on the same VLAN as the TV, so far nothing.

I also looked in the logs of the only other device that TV can access (excluding Jellyfin) that runs a web server - the Pi-Holes.

Both of them do DoH via nginx + Lua and have port 80 open with a redirect to 443 that 404s on anything other than /dns-query.

Neither of them have anything in their logs, going back years for the TV and it has had the same static IP for years.

So yeah...

kura,
@kura@noc.social avatar

@tripplehelix possibly.

The honeypot is still running, nothing happening on it though. I'll leave it going, doesn't cost me anything to run it.

I also checked my Jellyfin logs because the TV can access it and does have the app installed and configured just never gets used. That is run behind nginx on ports 80 and 443.
Nothing in the logs for that that aren't me actually firing up the app at some point.

kura,
@kura@noc.social avatar

@tripplehelix very weird. I'll keep an eye on mine but I doubt I'll see anything.

My Unifi router is also configured to run a honeypot exposing various services on every VLAN and none of those have ever pinged due to something trying to access.

Honestly can't explain it. I'd guess we have the same webOS version, that did get updated recently.

Also, nmap scan your TV. It'll have a few ports open, some of which are an HTTP server. They're for remote control using the phone app iirc.

On the #Linux #Terminal, is there a way to list all #systemctl issues? For example, show the number of and which #services have issues, the same way cockpit does in the web interface?

Answer via @kura

systemctl list-units --state failed

You can find all states with

systemctl list-units --state help

or via @luap

systemctl --failed

kura,
@kura@noc.social avatar

@tripplehelix

systemctl list-units --state failed

kura,
@kura@noc.social avatar

@tripplehelix FYI you can ask it for any of systemd's states. A list of states can be seen with;

systemctl list-units --state help

kura,
@kura@noc.social avatar

@tripplehelix fair. Systemd has a lot of functionality, some of it I'd consider pretty good like timers and I really like journald. It's also so much simpler to write a program that is run by systemd and logs to journald.

We use it for a ton of stuff at work so had to get good at debugging it.

kura,
@kura@noc.social avatar

@tripplehelix I still find some of the stuff confusing, like how it all fits together.

I had a DNS issue with a local machine a while back where resolv.conf was pointing at systemd, but systemd had no DNS configuration that I could find. I forget what it was in the end but it took me ages to figure it out.

The best part of this TV, the LG OLED evo C3 is there's no logo! Just pure picture with a tiny bezel. Base software install has adverts included everywhere, even in the screen saver. Luckily, all can be disabled, and I took it off the network once it was updated. Honestly, not much difference with this OLED technology. I have everything standard, with AI video on, and everything looks very natural. Almost like I'm looking through a window. The AI audio is a disaster, super scratchy.

kura,
@kura@noc.social avatar

@tripplehelix it's great isn't it. Don't forget to stick it on expert picture mode for SD content and wait until you see it playing DV or HDR content.

I didn't own a TV for years, like a decade. Bought my LG OLED a few years ago and fell in love instantly.

The upscaler on the LG is pretty damn good with old SD content too. It's called Super Resolution in settings. Basically upscaling trained by ML.

I have all the other advanced features off except Real Cinema which is one for some reason.

Got the cat's spleen sample test results today from the nodules they found on her spleen last week.

They are cancerous.

Was kind of obvious that they would be, or at least something else would be, given the rising protein levels in her blood.

Not much I think can really be done. She's 16 later this year and I don't really think it's good to put her on chemo at her age. Plus she has stage 2 CKD and arthritis.

kura,

@hynek never played it on the PS4 so dunno how it is on that platform but it's a solid game on PC.

I really enjoyed the Automatron, Far Harbor and Nuka-World DLCs.

I spent many, many hours re-playing that game with different builds and even made a few mods.

Where do I buy a good spec dumb, 4k nowadays?

kura,
@kura@noc.social avatar

@tripplehelix they sadly don't really exist. I love my LG OLED but I had to set its region to "Other" and disable it's internet access to stop it showing ads. Then needed a second device for the smart functionality.

The only actual feature this TV has that I use is the upscaling. I prefer it to the Shield TV upscaler.

I wish the industry wasn't this sucky.

kura,
@kura@noc.social avatar

@tripplehelix @mike805 they do make exceptional OLED panels though.

Although I don't know how they compare to OLED + QD.

kura,
@kura@noc.social avatar

@tripplehelix @mike805 that is pretty much the same reasoning I had. I wanted a good OLED panel that'd last, ideally 10 years.

I figured a good quality 2160p OLED would last at least 5 years. The only new thing I foresee being worth upgrading in future would be to OLED + QD. 8K is bullshit.

And now I just put money aside every month for the 10 year replacement. That works out at £10/month. In reality I put twice as much aside in case of needing a replacement in 5 years.

kura,
@kura@noc.social avatar

@tripplehelix @mike805 nice. The 42 inch C2 Evo or picking a different model? The C-variant is good value for money, the higher end models less so. I dunno about the slightly cheaper variants.

Has anyone else tried breaking down (for recycling) the box from an Apple Studio Display?

Apple has ditched plastic/foam padding (good) but replaced it with the Cardboard From Hell—box is heavier than the monitor it contains, layers of laminated cardboard glued together in 2-3cm thick blocks to absorb impacts, smaller boxes inside larger boxes to fill surplus volume, all glued in place!

Chopping it up is a nightmare, really needed an electric hacksaw instead of a box-cutter.

kura,
@kura@noc.social avatar

@cstross had a similar issue with the box my work MBP 14 inch came in.

Took me about 20 minutes to hack the bastard thing up to manageable chunks.

kura,
@kura@noc.social avatar

@cstross yeah I can't imagine it's fun with a box that big.

Due to my recycling bin being shared I like to reduce the overall size of what I put in it so I tend to chop and flatten. Which is why I spent so much time dismantling the laptop box.

I want to know why they felt the need to glue so much of it. Surely they could've done it with folds?

What's the best in terms of ease of login and UX?

Not looking for mobile only as my phone is rooted.

kura,
@kura@noc.social avatar

@tripplehelix I don't like the whole mobile-only thing but I have to say, I switched to Monzo in 2020 and they've been a damn good bank for me.

It's annoying that they are mobile-only, and they only just added the ability to deposit cheques via the app (previously you had to send it in the mail to a freepost address which took longer to process, or a paid address which was fast), but the only cheques I've ever got to pay in were from HMRC.

They'd have to royally fuck up for me to want to move.

kura,
@kura@noc.social avatar

@tripplehelix I never did a photo but they do ID you. For me it was driver's license + I had to record a video in-app.

This is pretty normal though just to confirm you are who you say you are, where high street banks need paper documents and proof of address.

It's a government mandate iirc, to stop fraud and money laundering.

I dislike insurance, in general they get way more out of me than I ever get out of them.

But not having to stump up a total of £1300 vet bill for diagnostic is nice... Even if the insurance company rinsed me for far more than that amount over the years.

kura,
@kura@noc.social avatar

@tripplehelix I have definitely got my monies worth this year. £1042 in November, £1300 5 months later.

The premiums are 100% going up when I'm up for renewal in July...

kura,
@kura@noc.social avatar

@tripplehelix yeah some vets are bad.

Mine is pretty good. I pay £25 a month which means no appointment fee and free vaccinations.

My cat goes to the vet every month for a check up and arthritis medication so that saves me £20. And they charge meds without markup which is nice considering the arthritis meds are £90 a pop.
