Lufthansa cancelled our flights a few hours before departure and suggested via automated mail to instead take a train. From Hamburg to Venice.

That got me interested, but it takes about 15 hours to get there. On the other hand it's just 1200 km.

I wish we had a European high-speed train backbone, connecting all the big cities or similar. I would use it, even if the travel times would be twice as long and the prices twice as much as flying.

@vollkorn Amen! I love riding trains and prefer them over flying, but it’s mind-boggling how needlessly frustrating and needlessly expensive it currently is to book long-distance train travel within Europe.
I’m not even just talking about the price of the ticket, but also things like: ending up buying expensive last-minute tickets for connecting trains, because operator Y of leg B will not give a fsck if you miss your connecting train due to delays by operator X on leg A 😔
