@WikibaseCommunity manager Valerie Wollinger interviewed me a few months back about my early experience with Wikibase and ongoing work with the stakeholders community.

We had a frank conversation with a focus on what works well & what can still be improved further.

Excerpts from the interview are now available as a blog post on Wikimedia Tech News: https://tech-news.wikimedia.de/2023/11/07/championing-new-methods/

And on the topic of current doom vs utopia debates, this recent piece on DIS is also great (fun?): https://dis.art/literally-no-place by artists Daniel Felstead & Jenn Leung.

I hope at some point in this conf we can also discuss the question - how to incentivise devs to share their code publicly always and by default (regardless if it's "perfect" or spaghetti - it's a spectrum anyway, right?). Basically if a project gets public funding and uses funding to write code, even if just in pilot / Proof-of-Concept stage, code should be online from day 1. But as most tricky questions, I guess the problem is social not technical, right?

@acousticmirror I am not really sure what you mean actually. All I was saying is (very basic concept) people should use public Git repos for their code. We have Gitlab at the Open Science Lab and for open license repos all the premium features are free, I think GitHub have similar deals for edu / non profits. And the premium features aren't even that important, they are just nicer project management tools. My point is precisely that we can't (and don't have to) directly compare code to text publishing. I think the latter has too many legacy/ historic complications.

Been slowly watching this Nancy Fraser x Verso interview over the course of the week: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNeAvN5eZ0A&ab_channel=VersoBooks

(It's 2 hours and a slow burner, so grab the popcorn and enjoy!)

And honestly, I have so many gaps (post-structuralist US education, check), makes me really want to join a new-left, intersectional-feminist reading group. There's got to be some such thing in Berlin, right?

Excited to be in sunny Basel once again ☀️ and to visit the Critical Media Lab tomorrow for a colloquium on archives, digital interfaces and all the good topics.

>>
Teaser excerpt:
"... we want to discuss how art, design, and practice-led research negotiate some of the problematic questions linked to the accessibility of digitized resources. We want to shed some light on how such approaches can contribute to rendering visible hidden mechanisms of the catalog and creating interventions contributing to the collective needs of the respective communities."
