The shape of the org is in the way for deploying

Placing a software crafter in a development team resembles placing a tester in the team on the impacts it has on the team output. I am thinking that filling roles / positions like "tester" over finding the impacts an individual enhances such as "feedback" is getting old-school.

matthewskelton,
@matthewskelton@mastodon.social avatar

@maaretp a good tester is worth about 6 or 7 "mash the keyboard" developers any day.

This is kind of a weird question, but in your education as a programmer were you ever taught anything that you would describe as a "dimensional shift" in your thinking and if so, what was it?

By "dimensional shift", I mean something deeply profound and different that completely changed the way in which you looked at things.

Not programming, but I'd offer thinking in infinitesimals from math as example.

matthewskelton,
@matthewskelton@mastodon.social avatar

@dabeaz for me, a major "aha" moment was when I really grokked deployment pipelines as defined in the book Continuous Delivery - the implications for flow, team ownership, and architecture are profound.

There is now a IVF bs y with 3 DNA sources.

All I can think about is the administrative hell this child will face in life. 3 parents, what happens in a divorce, legality around just everything where parent names are required etc?

Wonder what they are doing about that.

@ripienaar some government databases are gonna need a schema change 🤪

"The governance and controls required to make the project-oriented model work at all are super expensive (in time and money) compared to the alternatives. It’s also like kryptonite for your best people. " -- Joshua Arnold

matthewskelton,
@matthewskelton@mastodon.social avatar

@mhbastian Yup. The principles of fast flow and team-centric value delivery really illuminate how broken the "project" model is for so many things.

"The enterprise may talk about investing in "our people," and they may claim to embrace the idea of product thinking, but the primary "unit of funding" is the project."

Excellent insights from John Cutler, as always.

Battenbergs for the Battenberg 👑

matthewskelton,
@matthewskelton@mastodon.social avatar

@Cloudguy Battenberg is not the same as Battenburg

matthewskelton,
@matthewskelton@mastodon.social avatar

@Cloudguy berg == hill, burg == town

And of course, Battenberg == Mountbatten, the former surname of the Windsors

matthewskelton,
@matthewskelton@mastodon.social avatar

@Cloudguy this is awesome. I mean, the Battenberg cake is so unlikely, right? It's like a joke from a kids TV program.

Respect for asking the bakery in Battenburg 😂

Explainer: why phenology is key in tracking climate change

crichardson, to random

Hey @TeamTopologies when I read this (pedantically) it sounds like:

"a stream-aligned team is a team aligned to a stream, which is aligned to a business domain/capability"

matthewskelton,
@matthewskelton@mastodon.social avatar

@crichardson

Exactly. Most streams of work should align to a domain.

@TeamTopologies

matthewskelton,
@matthewskelton@mastodon.social avatar

@crichardson

Typically, yes. Sometimes, though, teams are aligned to something else. See the section on Fracture Planes in the TT book.

@TeamTopologies

matthewskelton,
@matthewskelton@mastodon.social avatar

@crichardson the second. A Stream-aligned team is always (by definition) aligned to a stream of work, and that stream is typically - but not always - aligned to a domain.
