but not me, no siree!

i'm spending hours trying to figure out which roached out antique kodak vest pocket camera i need to buy to get the meniscus lens for soft focus

this is healthy.

@danhon You’re mistaking square space for something good, instead of GeoCities Pro

as someone who’s increasingly starting to think of themselves as an interaction designer, I got a problem from a client that entirely hits the nail on the head for the kind of things I like working on: a communications problem which would still exist w/o computers

I mean, there are computers involved, but in modeling the problem I can avoid them entirely. I can pare it down to essentials, a collaborative game of passing cards or such, which lets me focus on the actually hard problems

Waiting for the anesthetic to kick in today, ALL my dentist wanted to talk about was Spatial Computing

(we’ve been swapping shop talk the last few months as I catch up on dental work)

She’s even more Covid-conscious and rigorous than the major medical facilities, so I wasn’t surprised by how DETAILED her imagination was about this

Mostly really pumped about 3D medical imaging, pre-visualizing procedures, and simulation. An angle that hadn’t occurred to me at all, but now has me intrigued

mattly,
@mattly@hachyderm.io avatar

@danilo the gist is that intelligence takes many forms: Logic/Math, Linguistic, Spatial, Body/Kinesthetic, Musical, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, Naturalistic, Emotional, Existential, Creative, Collaborative. Probably more

each of us has degrees of aptitude with each, yet computing thus far has only really catered to and empowered a small subset

the video goes on, but I’m growing on the idea there’s a lot of potential for “tools for understanding” when you add more interactive capabilities

mattly,
@mattly@hachyderm.io avatar

@danilo I think you would find Victor’s other talks, essays, and work in computing interesting

Colleague spent two days tracking down a bug in @astro, made a PR with tests, accommodated change requests and then the maintainer who requested changes just merged their own PR. What a waste of time for us trying to play nice in the open source world. PSA: don’t do this if you ever want anyone to contribute again in the future.

@janl @astro As someone who likes & uses @astro I’m disappointed;

As someone who’s watched the evolution of OSS through GitHub/bpm I’m not surprised at all, it’s why I’ve stopped providing unsolicited patches, merely reporting bugs

Hey folks, just as a reminder,

don’t install Remote Access or Management tools for your employer on your personal devices

I’m consulting these days, and a client wanted me to use Chrome with a managed profile, and even that is a no-go for me; it still lets them install & remove extensions inside Chrome, which still qualifies as a RAT, and is a hard no from me

If they want that access, they can supply the device

(in fairness, they plead ignorance of this capability)

mattly,
@mattly@hachyderm.io avatar

I recall a time when my employer told me I had to install some MDM-ware on my phone so I could get access to my work email, and folks,

they didn’t expect a no

“how will you check email away from your computer” I won't
“how will we notify you of an early morning meeting” a) you won’t b) LOL if you think I’m available before 9
“how can we make sure you’re not using TikTok” Fuck off

Absolutely wild to see the threads of social antipathy coalescing in the anti- column:

  • The seething hatred of Apple, which dates to computing antiquity.

  • The malaise and disdain reserved for all things emanating from Silicon Valley, generally.

  • An inability to imagine a future, or to imagine that change will be positive in any way.

  • An attachment to the status quo of computing at the point where it gave the opinion-holder their greatest sense of power

mattly,
@mattly@hachyderm.io avatar

@danilo my biggest reservation remains the critique that Apple’s stranglehold on the platform constitutes an attack on general-purpose computing

most of the people I know who have similar reservations also unfortunately couch them in your points 1,3,&4

mattly,
@mattly@hachyderm.io avatar

@danilo Oh don’t get me wrong, as someone who’s been the sort of “Friends & Family IT staff” I’m totally in that frame of mind as well; there are no easy answers there

But it doesn’t help anyone’s case for this to muddy the waters with other argument tropes, yet that’s all I see anymore

I explicitly cited spreadsheets as low-leverage for and I love that Microsoft is like “nah, fuck it, we’ll give it a try”

My pet theory right now is that they killed HoloLens to reboot it

That they WILL be more effective than Meta at a 3D OS

And that as Google flounders into its terminal Yahoo phase, Meta will look to Microsoft as its OS vendor

So bringing Office to is just a bit of R&D.

mattly,
@mattly@hachyderm.io avatar

@danilo oof, the best I’ve been able to do so far for the theory is some semi-coherent theorizing during the weekly pizza lunch I have with a bunch of other nerds in my neighborhood

in short: if you take the idea behind functional reactive programming as “there are initial values, that change, and other values derived from those, you can arrive at a directed acyclic computation graph similar to a spreadsheet, which provides a canvas of cells for addressing instead of variable names

mattly,
@mattly@hachyderm.io avatar

@danilo the 2.5D canvas of the spreadsheet is limiting in a lot of not-ideal ways, and TBH I’m not even really sure how to put the ideas I have about extending that spatially into words yet

This piece by Don Norman (of “The Design of Everyday Things” fame) on accessibility and design has been going around, and is worth a read, especially if you work in technology and don’t consider yourself a “designer”

Accessibility affordances help everyone, and if you are creating things, accessibility is part of your job. I wish more engineering/product types understood that
