So a little over a decade ago I quit my adequate but increasingly uncertain low-level IT job to try to make it in freelance work. But leading up to it, I splurged on a few high-end durable staples in a sort of applied version of Pratchett's Boots Theory, figuring if I bought them then, I'd be set for a while. (One was literally some Docs -- you know, boots.)

I'm having to engage in a little credit card abuse this time, but I'm feeling the need to do that again.
