World Fantasy, Nebula, Tiptree finalist repped by Russ Galen. Curator of happiness. Gamer, parent, computer science student, language nerd, cancer brat. Whatever pronouns feel right to you.

My header shows my urban fantasy trilogy - BORDERLINE, PHANTOM PAINS, and IMPOSTOR SYNDROME, against a downtown L.A. backdrop. My profile pic shows an androgynous middle aged white person with buzzed hair, smiling warmly but perhaps a little shyly.

I miss the days when a search engine would look for what you typed instead what it's pretty sure you meant to type.

Headed back to active flexibility class tonight for the first time in several months. This is gonna be rough, but hopefully the kind of rough that leads to progress.

@lynnemthomas You've got this. Glad to hear you're giving it the effort.

Anyone who thinks "cancel culture" is some newfangled thing has never read one (1) Regency novel.

Social consequences for certain actions, up to and including complete "ruination," are nothing new.

I saw someone here say "LLMs are coming to gmail so we should all get out" - can someone explain to me what this means? I don't really follow "AI" news as it bums me out and there's nothing I can do about it except choose not to use it when possible.

But they're saying it like it's a non-opt-outable security risk, and abandoning gmail at this point would be more stress than I can currently handle, so can someone knowledgeable straighten me out on this supposed security risk? Like I'm four.

mishellbaker,
@mishellbaker@wandering.shop avatar

Oh and without any "scare" words like "doomed" or "hellscape," as I've filtered most of those. Just the facts, please :)

mishellbaker,
@mishellbaker@wandering.shop avatar

I am referring to a reply to this post (and I don't understand the first post either as I thought LLM just stood for language learning model and I have no idea how one "hooks one up" to an email account so as not to read one's emails.)

@disappearinjon No that is helpful. Just wish I knew for sure how true it was!

mishellbaker,
@mishellbaker@wandering.shop avatar

@disappearinjon What should I do, other than abandon my 10+ year old gmail account which has essentially become a substitute for my own memory at this point?

mishellbaker,
@mishellbaker@wandering.shop avatar

@disappearinjon Thanks so much for all the advice. I'll keep my eyes open.

If you are starting with atrophied muscles, maybe you literally just curl your arm without weights for a while.

If meditation is causing you distress, you're either choosing the wrong thing to return focus to (breathing can be immensely triggering for some), you are going too long, or you are mentally punishing yourself for each thought that pops up instead of recognizing it as a natural part of the back and forth motion.

@mishellbaker@wandering.shop avatar

Meditation isn't "bad" for anyone unless you have wrong expectations about it. Most common thing I hear is "I can't shut off my thoughts." That's like being six and saying you can't bench press 200 pounds. Yeah, if you try that, you'll hurt yourself.

Meditation is like a bicep curl for the mind; it is the repeated process of losing focus and pulling it back (and no, it doesn't have to be to your breath). That regular exercise will yield results long term.

It frustrates me as an ND person hearing "I'm neurodivergent so I can't meditate." The myth that meditation is only for neurotypical people is harmful, as meditation is one of the few free and side-effect free things you can do that genuinely, long term, can help balance emotions and give one more control over one's own mind.

The problem comes in thinking of meditation as an event: starting too far along in the process and judging the results short term. Again, the weight lifting metaphor.

It finally occurs to me, on the 6th or 7th gray and rainy day out of the last 9 days, that maybe I should use my happy light...

I asked a guy, who was tearing up a driveway a couple miles from my place, if I could have the busted "urbanite" for , as my site has NO rocks (unless they were brought here). I'm 72 and I really should find some helpers. Every piece gets picked up and set down at least 3 times before coming to rest, not to mention busting up the big piece and fine shaping the smaller ones. It adds up and my knees let me know they are not thrilled. Oh, well. I think it looks nice & I love the work. Keeps me exercised while wearing me down. Like Life.

Oh, #Bridgerton Season 3 is May 16? If only I had 2 days where I could do little but sit/lie around and re binge watch two seasons of something! And then two more similar days to binge watch a new thing!

Every situation has a bright side, I'm telling ya.

Little bit concerned that Squiggles is wandering around the Serengeti alone, dressed as one of nature's most hapless and tasty flightless prey animals.
