New(-to-me) laptop is in!

Also, I've been experimenting a bit with #NomadBSD lately. It's not quite as polished as a Linux distro, but it's mighty nice! (Persistent #FreeBSD-based boot USB image, can do UFS or ZFS and optionally encrypt)

@RL_Dane I used to run TAILS as a daily driver back in the mid-2010s, largely as an intellectual exercise. Immutable, in-RAM OSes still fascinate me.

@WEATHERISHAPPENING nice. Ubuntu was my very first distro (oddly, my first one was the first Ubuntu), from which I moved onto pure Debian. I know people have ideological issues with SystemD, but I like its simplicity compared to other OSes.

I get that it's actually a terrible business and a wonderful way to burn your life savings down to the ground, but it would be so much fun to run a little neighborhood café. Great coffee? Organic nibbles? Live music? Themed nights? Free meeting space for radical groups looking to mobilize? Bliss.

@ben honestly i've seen a hybrid approach work well here in philly. a lot of the indie coffee companies start as carts / food trucks, then move on to an actual space after building the positive cash flow.

though, oddly, there was one called Rival that went from cart -> storefront -> back to cart. 🤔 They said that the appetite for third spaces doesn't seem to translate into business.

I don't know how more simply I can express this: Pre-Islamic Revolution Irán was really not great either. It was a monarchy with a secret police apparatus that murdered millions.

The takeaway that Americans should have from Iranian history is deep sympathy for a group of citizens who are otherwise trapped inside 200 years of brutal oppression.
