I'm seeing discourse in the wake of Super Mario Bros. Wonder about how Nintendo is able to maintain such a high standard of quality because many folks on the team are veterans who've been working on Mario games for 20, 30, 40 years, and that doesn't happen here in the USA. I think it's important to note that, like, Japanese game companies don't treat their employees well. They just don't lay them off! That's the bar we're talking about clearing here.

When I took my driver's test, a kid ran out onto the road in front of me, I braked, and the proctor made a check mark on his forms.

This was circa 2010 and has never happened to me since -- with animals, yes, with children, no -- so the DMV definitely staged this interaction.

Do you think the DMV rotates the kids out periodically, or is the same one just running out in front of cars all day until they get hit, then they hire a new one?

I got a notification that someone logged into my "Microsoft account" from the Dominican Republic. I tried resetting my password so I could log in and have a look. It said my account was locked due to suspicious activity and asked for my phone number. I still have no idea what account this is; it could be any of a dozen Microsoft services. While I was clicking around trying to figure that out, it asked me to rate my satisfaction on a scale from 1 to 5.

Okay, now that you've all had the chance to play Gordy and the Monster Moon, here's my ulterior motive for making it: I want to play more games like it. Can you help me find some?

I've described Gordy as "Zelda-like" but here are some specific things I was trying for, even if I didn't succeed at all of them:

  • New or underutilized setting/theme. Steam didn't even have a "Halloween" tag!
  • I don't want to kill things. Preferably no combat, but at the very least not swords/guns again.

  • Free exploration. Soft gates rather than hard. Player knowledge gates rather than collectibles.
  • No explicit tutorials. Games should be mysterious! Let me figure it out. (Help me figure it out.)
  • New items with their own rules, e.g. not the hookshot again. Hookshot again is not mysterious.
  • Minimal text/exposition.

I've already played A Short Hike. It's great! Tunic is probably the next closest match I've played. It's also great! What else is out there?

I told my travel agent that I'm worried I might not get my passport in time for my flight and they said I should call my senator. I thought it was a joke at first, but no, apparently that's the first thing you try.

Even just the idea that no matter how badly I fuck up, no matter how trivial the problem is, I can exercise my privilege to demand that they dig up Dianne Feinstein so she can drop everything to fix my shit -- and this is normal and expected -- makes me extremely uncomfortable.

Gordy launch week, by the numbers:

  • About 2300 (free) downloads of the Pico-8 cartridge from my web site.
  • About 350 downloads of the source code.
  • About a dozen messages from people saying how much they enjoyed it -- one from someone who told me how much better the dad in the game is than their own dad 😭

@thanius Yeah I made it in Pico-8. I don't know how the binary exporter works exactly, but I'm pretty sure the html and native executable exporters are independent pipelines.

@grumpygamer So far Gordy has sold 10x as many units on Steam. That's commensurate with the amount of work required to get the game on each platform, but based on past games performance I expect the disparity to grow
