I think this kind of game looks really neat as an interactive storytelling medium with a really low barrier to entry. If you've ever wanted to make an FMV game but don't have the time/energy, the downpour.games editor/engine hits a lot of the same notes

Are boomerangs a thing? I've never gotten one to work. I trust that other people have, but I have no way to tell if the magic is in the object itself or if it's all in the user. Maybe the folks who can throw a boomerang in a circle could throw any object in a circle. Maybe that's just a skill you can learn.

This shit is like if I loaded up an S3M and there was an omega in the effects column and I asked around and people were like "oh you didn't know about the Greek effects?"

When Brits want to address a woman respectfully they say "mom." When they want to address a mother they say "mum." When they want to refer to staying quiet they say "moom." It's turtles all the way down the vowel chart

@jeffgerstmann I count 15 RPGs, 45 sports games and 11 turn based strategy games on the list of remaining NES games at 8bitninendo.science. (Caveat: I was just eyeballing it and I didn't count wrestling, boxing or racing games as sports games.)

If you have 500 games to go and rate 6 games per episode, that gives you 83 episodes left which means you should be doing 0.18 RPGs per episode, 0.54 sports games per episode, and 0.13 turn based strategy games per episode.

Yesterday I picked up medication for my wife at the pharmacy. They asked for her name and medical record number. They didn't ask for my ID or any other proof that I maybe actually know this person.

It makes me want to come back with random numbers to find out what other meds they unlock. Maybe start a wiki. Like how I used to enter random Game Genie codes just to see what would happen.

My theory: articles like this are astroturfed by Apple's PR team, because they don't want to take the blame for making it extremely inconvenient to use headphones.

I used to know people who'd been old for my whole life. Now I only know people who started out young and then got old. Nobody's genuinely old anymore, it's nothing but posers these days.

Recording Mario Wonder for Twinbeard Plays, and the second playthrough falls down much further than I'm accustomed to. My hypothesis is that the design relies so heavily on the novelty of the various seed effects to drive player interest that without that novelty it falls flat

Wearing glasses is associated with a 15% reduction in COVID infections. (Unless the glasses interfere with masking.)

If you've got perfect eyesight, I bet chemistry goggles do even better -- and so stylish too!

I am currently between gigs. If you are or know someone who ought to hire the Frog Fractions Guy, let me know. If you are or know someone who wants to fund a game made with my design sensibilities, let me know.

I've been making games in Pico-8 for a while and putting them various places but I've finally gotten around to putting all of them on itch:

https://twinbeard.itch.io/

The free games are also on the Pico-8 BBS. Splore 'em if you got 'em!

@zep Hey, I finally got around to uploading all my (free) Pico-8 games to the BBS but at first I put them all in one post so as not to spam the forum, and that seem to have confused the system that makes the cartridges available. Is there any way I can fix this?

Nintendo contracted the development of Donkey Kong to an outside team, because they didn't have in-house game programmers yet. Donkey Kong was that team's first game. This essay is a first-person account by one of the devs on the team, written in the mid-90s and only translated into English recently.

(The team's second game was Zaxxon.)

For the last year I've been semi-daily posting "What I'm Listening To Today" links in this thread:

https://mastodon.social/@mcc/108199886340178151

The thread is now so long it is increasingly breaking Mastodon, so I am making a new thread, starting here.

To recap, here's the entirety of the year-one thread in the most impractical possible format: A YouTube playlist containing 246 songs and running for just over 47 hours:

@mcc The thing that messes with my head is that two tones that sound identical to the ear can distort with vastly different results, because we can't hear phase

mogwai_poet,
@mogwai_poet@mastodon.social avatar

@BartWronski @mcc @demofox Hmm, I wouldn't trust a synthesizer that's tuned to sound good to run this kind of test -- I would bet it has some overdrive in there.

If I designed a test for this it'd would be using something like Max/MSP or Puredata, or just writing code. Something where you can observe and control the whole signal path.

mogwai_poet,
@mogwai_poet@mastodon.social avatar

@BartWronski @mcc @demofox Yeah in that case the test is probably trustworthy
