How was your day, Lemmy? Because mine was mortifying!

I got stuck on a lunchtime video conference today with some people in my department and a vendor. I hate meetings at noon, but with timezones being a factor, it was the only available time the vendor could meet. Usually, I’m only on these for technical consultation, so I rarely need to speak other than to clarify a point or...

mountainCalledMonkey,

that’s pretty funny and equally embarrassing. thank you for sharing. i admit, I don’t pay much attention to traditional lunch times becsuse i mainly meet with network ops folks who have no concept of time or work-life balance. 24/7 or bust. i have a beard so foods like ribs, and tacos that fall apart are my kryptonite. i feel like i need to take a face shower after a meal at times. And honestly after the quarantine period of covid i felt like i had to learn how to interact with society again. cheers.

mountainCalledMonkey,

this headline is deceiving… we party every weekend in dc

Selfhosted Wireless Cameras

I currently have a couple of (amazon) Blink cameras. I would like similar cameras but that are self hosted. Yes these basically are however the HW-Sync module sucks its slow. I’ve tried other chinese brands which are slower. I was about to buy the Eufy Homebase setup it seemed perfect easy low power cameras. However their...

mountainCalledMonkey,

I’m not familiar with Amazon blink cameras. I use a reoLink and a Raspberry Pi for two cameras that go to a dedicated Zone Minder NVR server which is firewalled off from any internet access or access to other networks within my house.
reolink was pretty easy, blocking all wan traffic is very important - I’m sure like any store-bought solution. the raspberry pi is low quality and obviosuly a diy solution, but is ok. zoneminder is one of a handful of open source nvr softwares. It’s not great in my opinion. I don’t think it uses resources efficiently and it’s a bit of a pain to set up initially. But from what i read all of these opensource nvr apps have their quirks.

i read good things about amcrest cameras

curious, why aren’t you able to self-host your blink cameras; are they ip cameras and is there an rtp stream you can capture?

mountainCalledMonkey,

I’m interested in seeing what you come up with.

Does something like podHoarder fit the bill?

mountainCalledMonkey,

i used OpenScan recently, another FOSS app - worked ok. Sources: Izzy’s repo or Google Play

mountainCalledMonkey,

This is right inside the Palm Beach inlet down in Florida (u.s.)

mountainCalledMonkey,

without a ton of thought, and other than my current house:

  • travel, in general. recently a trip to sail out of svalbard down to norway. it’s another world up there
  • an inexpensive handtruck is one of the most useful tools i have
  • a ‘prosumer’ grade espresso machine and a grinder is used and loved every single day

mountainCalledMonkey,

strange, i started having this same issue on brave about 3 months ago. i installed firefox and am not having this problem. no battery / background restrictions set for either

mountainCalledMonkey,

when i was a kid i would go to the library all the time until 10, which was late for me at that age. i wasn’t a big reader, but it was a perfect excuse to escape family.

mountainCalledMonkey,

actually, hunter-gatherer communities ‘work’ significantly less time than we do in our corporate jobs. farming is a different story: here’s one study: www.sciencedaily.com/releases/…/190520115646.htm

mountainCalledMonkey,

i took this 3 day ‘7-habits’ course as a network ops manager. myself and a couple others who were in there kept asking how we can apply this to our environment. they couldn’t answer and by the end of the three days they just flat out said that these skills won’t work at all in NOC management. i enjoy learning new skills, but those three days were miserable.

Take another look at Joe Biden. His is the presidency progressives have been waiting for. (www.theguardian.com)

The tragedy of Joe Biden is that people see his age, his frailty and his ailing poll numbers and they miss the bigger story. Which is that his has been a truly consequential presidency, even a transformational one. In less than three years, he has built a record that should unify US progressives, including those on the radical...

mountainCalledMonkey,

unfortunately the insanity cycle doesn’t want to end. maybe we have to destroy ourselves before we can break it.

mountainCalledMonkey,

50% of america doesn’t vote at all. we are a huge contributor to our own mess

mountainCalledMonkey,

the harnes has always made sense to me. if I’m in weather where i need a harness, pfd should be on too. new idea though… maybe after 20 minutes the shark bait capsule releases?

mountainCalledMonkey,

i have watched my dad get completely scammed by the process of entering a retirement community over the past three years. nothing illegal, but taking every penny from retired folks is big business! our family is notoriously stubborn and nothing i said or did seemed to make a difference.

Try to ensure, if they won’t listen to you, that they at least have a lawyer present when signing away their life savings. and several years before that even happens work with an advisor (who is actually looking out for customers’ interests…shop around fire the advisors until you find one who isn’t a con-man) to shelter as much money as possible. i failed at getting him to do either of those things.

mountainCalledMonkey,

Genuinely curious where you’re getting these numbers. I can’t seem to find any formal public opinion polls on the enacted or proposed bills

No Lawns and Native Plants Resources (request)

I’ve seen 2 new awesome resources pop up in the comments this week (I haven’t added them to the list yet my personal life is chaos right now). I’d love to know if you guys have come across any other books, websites, videos etc that you find very useful and informative to add to the list....

mountainCalledMonkey,

nice. i just stumbled on this community while looking for some ‘ornamental’ grasses to plant this month…reducing my lawn one chunk at a time.
