Giving up on all the fancy stuff and just transitioned my newsletter back to a simple Mailman operation. There's a form at the bottom of my website: https://nathanschneider.info/

Bye, bye, tracking and formatting.

@ntnsndr Nice! I got an error "The hidden token didn't match. Did your IP change?" when submitting the form from the website, but the link to the subscription page worked. Happy to see @mayfirst offer more lists!

That’s a familiar face! It’s Jaroslav Rudiš @jaroslavrudis , known for the book Gebrauchsanweisung fürs Zugreisen, which is great and easy to read with just half forgotten high school German skills . with too many false alerts:

«At 08:48, team 1 passed its responsibilities to team 2. Team 2 did not escalate either the 284 information alerts or the suspension alerts. Team 3 failed to escalate the incident because their monitoring system filtered out all but eight of the alerts. Team 3 escalated the incident to team 2, via email, at 09:31, 20 minutes after the [incident was resolved]. Having received no response, team 3 followed up four hours later.»

life hack:

  1. buy a train ticket in Finland in VR's Ekstra (= first) class
  2. take all water bottles from the self-service drinks thing
  3. return said water bottles to a store, and get the bottle deposit (€0.10 each)
  4. profit!

(for legal reasons this is a joke)

I'm finally "reconditioning" the latest unused X1 carbon from the extended household, a 2017 gen. (I'm still using the 2012 gen as it leaves nothing to be desired.)

Really there's nothing to do, it only needs a battery replacement. So the challenge begins: find a seller that ships to Finland; read the tea leaves to guess the reliability; wait a month or two for delivery from China; use the battery enough to find any obvious faults, but not so long that it's too late to return it.

Happy to see more people exposed to the culinary benefits of glue. I prefer potato starch but wheat and corn are ok too. Once you get good at avoiding lumps, reuse the experience in the next wheatpasting night in your neighbourhood.

"The only other common format for storing mails locally is mbox. But it stores all messages in a single file, which is unacceptable if you’d like to access them with regular tools."

disagree: mbox is absolutely not bad. I keep my entire mail archive (~20 years) with it. The largest file is 2GB, and I can read it easily with mutt and grepmail.
Having a single file is much more efficient than storing millions of small text files on disk.

I was asked to ELI5 the DDG-Microsoft downtime.

"It's like I ask you to set the table, but your older brother does it for you, without telling me. Like a washing machine which sends the clothes to a bigger machine in a basement; and when the pipes get clogged, all our neighbours' clothes go unwashed. Or a calculator where you write 2+2 and it phones someone across the globe to ask the answer; when the phone breaks or they speak different languages, you get no answer from the calculator."

nemobis,
@nemobis@mamot.fr avatar

Honestly "ELI5" is a ridiculous demand. First of all, I have no idea what a 5 yo knows, so the request is simply ineffective. More realistically one might be able to ask ELI12, with the proviso that we're talking about a country with universal mandatory education up to some level above the 5th grade.

Is there a word for "creator owned" co-ops where the ownership isn't held by employees, but isn't held by the consumer either? IE. what is social.coop? Does platform co-op cover it, or is there something more specific in wide use already?

I guess creator co-op is fine, I just don't know if it's actually in wide spread use.

nemobis,
@nemobis@mamot.fr avatar

@sam Why not just worker coop? You don't need to be an employee to be a worker.

nemobis,
@nemobis@mamot.fr avatar

@sam If we're still talking of the example in https://social.coop/@sam/112473770555580296 , podcasters still look like workers to me, and the fact that not all workers are members seems immaterial to me. If the main purpose of the coop is the exchange of work in the form of podcasts, and the people providing said work are members, it sounds like a worker coop to me. As long as the purchase of other services by other means including direct employment is not the majority of the turnover, the picture doesn't change.

nemobis,
@nemobis@mamot.fr avatar

@sam But yes, it might be that it's more of a service purchase coop if the main purpose is actually for those workers to pool their resources to purchase a service (the development of a website or whatever).
