A finance worker at a multinational firm was tricked into paying out $25 million to fraudsters using deepfake technology to pose as the company’s chief financial officer in a video conference call, according to Hong Kong police.

The elaborate scam saw the worker duped into attending a video call with what he thought were several other members of staff, but all of whom were in fact deepfake recreations, Hong Kong police said at a briefing on Friday.

“(In the) multi-person video conference, it turns out that everyone [he saw] was fake,” senior superintendent Baron Chan Shun-ching told the city’s public broadcaster RTHK.

Chan said the worker had grown suspicious after he received a message that was purportedly from the company’s UK-based chief financial officer. Initially, the worker suspected it was a phishing email, as it talked of the need for a secret transaction to be carried out.

However, the worker put aside his early doubts after the video call because other people in attendance had looked and sounded just like colleagues he recognized, Chan said.

Salad is good for you, generally speaking, so growing fresh greens in orbit seems like a winning way for space farers to stay healthy. New research suggests that as nutritious as space salad might be, it could pose something of a risk to astronauts.

The problem is growing leafy plants like lettuce and spinach in space can come with a side dish of bacteria, according to a new study from a team at the University of Delaware. In tests on plants grown in simulated microgravity, they were shown to actually be more susceptible than normal to the Salmonella enterica pathogen.

Back in the early/mid 90s I had just bought Death Spiritual Healing, Malevolent Creation Ten Commandments, and Nocturnus The Key from a video rental place in my home town.

Me and a buddy listened to all of the metal I just got and decided to see what else we could find. Then we saw it, it had to be the holy grail of heavy metal! There was a motorcycle blasting out of hell and this awesome bat in the background. The album was Bat Out of Hell and the band was so metal their name was Meatloaf! This was going to be soul crushingly heavy…

Almost Time for Mountain Gooseberries (sopuli.xyz)

My wife and I walk our dogs on a trail along the Rio Grande every morning, and years ago I found this patch of Mountain Gooseberries. The birds usually get to the ripe ones before I do. I never pick too many to ensure the birds do have enough. As the patch has grown, and continues to grow, I eat more.

I would argue that christians, specially white male christians are the worse evil to exist. Far more death and suffering has been caused in the name of Christ than in the name of satan.

Forcing the prosecutors to drop the hate crime is a huge victory for Cassidy and for religious freedom.

Dude is going get a small fine, no jail time, and the charge is being expunged. Now had it been a satanist beheading a Jesus statue, would things have gone this same way?

What makes fishing as a hobby so appealing that people will fish all hours of the day and in nasty weather?

I saw some people fishing the other day in 16 degree Fahrenheit (-9 Celsius) weather at 4:30AM. They were not ice fishing with a little hut, but standing at the base of a bridge with no shelter or campfire. People are at that bridge fishing regularly when it is cold but that was the coldest temp I have seen so far. Why is it so...

I do not understand relationships like this. My father would leave for hunting for 3-6 weeks at a time to get away from my mother, but would not divorce her. It made my childhood miserable.

From Time.com

What is ranked-choice voting?

Ranked-choice voting is an electoral system that allows people to vote for multiple candidates, in order of preference. Instead of just choosing who you want to win, you fill out the ballot saying who is your first choice, second choice, or third choice (or more as needed) for each position.

The candidate with the majority (more than 50%) of first-choice votes wins outright. If no candidate gets a majority of first-choice votes, then it triggers a new counting process. The candidate who did the worst is eliminated, and that candidate’s voters’ ballots are redistributed to their second-choice pick. In other words, if you ranked a losing candidate as your first choice, and the candidate is eliminated, then your vote still counts: it just moves to your second-choice candidate. That process continues until there is a candidate who has the majority of votes.

This is what happens without competition.

I used Napster for the better part of a year. The app was horrible, the web player bad. It would be missing random albums, and some albums had missing songs. I finally went back to Spotify. But am once again looking for an alternative, hopefully one with business licensing so I can play it in my shop.

I was a stay at home father for years. I had a really hard time with it and I think this is a great idea, but it also reminds me of an episode of always sunny. I hope it works out great for everyone that needs it.

It was a multitude of things. My oldest daughter was young enough that if I was able to quit she would never know I had ever smoked. A very close family friend had recently passed from complications from smoking. But the catalyst was a co-worker walking past me while I was smoking and said something to the effect of my life improving if I could quit. She was not preachy, nor was she judgmental about it. It was a simple statement. It made me think. Turns out she was a lung cancer survivor.

Was there an update to the B&R list I missed? It seems the last update was the 13th of May and we have not even had MH3 prerelease yet.

ETA: never mind I see there was an update today. lemmy.world/post/16253799

Trump Campaign Sent Cease-and-Desist Letter to ProPublica Attempting to Stop Their Latest Exposé. It Didn’t Work. (www.mediaite.com)

Former President Donald Trump’s campaign and businesses have provided “Significant financial benefits” to nine of the witnesses in his criminal cases, ProPublica reported Monday morning - shrugging off a threatening cease-and-desist letter sent by Trump’s attorney....

I thought she was trying to hide the Triangle of Zinthar.

Female singers only want to sing about love, relationships, or breakups. They need to sing more about Godzilla, Vikings, The Grim Reaper, or making a bet with the Devil for a golden fiddle.

At this point in history there’s been a billion songs from female singers about relationships. Nearly every song revolves around that topic....
