“Accessibility ‘Gaps’ in MVPs”

If your MVP does not have accessibility factored in, it is not viable.

feudjais, to accessibility French

Bonjour !

patrick_h_lauke,
@patrick_h_lauke@mastodon.social avatar

@feudjais utiliser quelques indications visuelles en plus, pas seulement la couleur, pour les differencier? des icones, des differentes bordures, des motifs. sinon, choisir des couleurs qui ont un tres fort contraste entre eux?

@SteveFaulkner "the vibes are much better though..."

patrick_h_lauke,
@patrick_h_lauke@mastodon.social avatar

@peterdutoit @SteveFaulkner beta, staging, etc... sure, they might improve it later, but if they start with inaccessible controls, then they need to add extra stuff on top to make them accessible. smart devs use the right elements to begin with... but hey, i'm not a 10x vulture capital funded engineer

patrick_h_lauke,
@patrick_h_lauke@mastodon.social avatar

@peterdutoit @SteveFaulkner if isn't baked into your MVP/beta, all signs point to "you don't actually care about it / see it as a nice-to-have-maybe-down-the-line" aspect. which is par for the course, sadly... (and usually then the first thing that gets dropped or deprioritised when "more important" things come up after launch)

patrick_h_lauke,
@patrick_h_lauke@mastodon.social avatar

@belwerks @SteveFaulkner @peterdutoit they either don't think the actual markup they use is important, and/or they export it from their figma or whatever without consideration for cleanup afterwards (full confession: i have no idea if figma actually outputs things nicely or not, just guessing here)

patrick_h_lauke,
@patrick_h_lauke@mastodon.social avatar

@belwerks @SteveFaulkner @peterdutoit i keep meaning to take it for a spin, but i'll hazard a guess that it's garbage in, garbage out...if the designer/dev didn't specify that something's an <a href="..."> link, or a <button>, it'll just vomit out div soup...

It's the age of ai - wtf do I still have to write alt-texts for photos??

patrick_h_lauke,
@patrick_h_lauke@mastodon.social avatar

@hikingdude AI can't infer intent. it may be able to describe "what" is in a picture, but not with certainty why you as an author took it or what you're trying to draw attention to/convey. but yes, feel free to use AI tools to make an initial suggestion ...

The best thing we could do to improve technology: replace almost everything that uses touch sensitive panels with actual switches.

Light switch on a bedside lamp? Actual switch not a touch sensor.

Play/pause on Bluetooth headphones? Actual switch not touch gestures.

You know you’ve pressed it because you can see, feel and hear it. You don’t need to learn a bunch of gestures.

Physical switches: good, actually.

Also a slide out Blackberry style keyboard for iPhone already.

patrick_h_lauke,
@patrick_h_lauke@mastodon.social avatar

@tommorris for the iphone keyboard...not even going to search, but i bet there's a custom phone case with that already out on the market. AND IF NOT WHY NOT YOU COWARDS

irrationally irritated by people who proudly announce how inclusive they are in their language choices...but then it's clear they haven't actually talked to the people they're trying to "help" and just make assumptions on their behalf... https://twitter.com/lauraparkerux/status/1651561367646748673 ... (with hat-tip to @davidofyork who still clearly scours twitter/the nazi bar)

patrick_h_lauke,
@patrick_h_lauke@mastodon.social avatar

@gnomicutterance I always advise folks that if they can use something more general than "click" or language like "view", in a very natural way, sure go for it. but don't go out of your way to reinvent language and end up with very stilted constructs...

A few years too late, but ARIA Authoring Practices Guide finally has (only) four support tables:
https://www.w3.org/blog/2023/04/answering-what-aria-can-i-use/

Mind, a year ago it re-branded as a copy-ready pattern library without any data on support.

patrick_h_lauke,
@patrick_h_lauke@mastodon.social avatar

@yatil @aardrian it's infuriatingly pointless. i don't doubt that whoever was involved with it worked really hard or whatever, but yes the conclusions/framing of results is supremely pointless. why not actually present it like ... caniuse do for browsers? instead of fucking numberwang https://youtu.be/0obMRztklqU

patrick_h_lauke,
@patrick_h_lauke@mastodon.social avatar

@yatil @aardrian is this supported in browser X with AT Y? yes, no, partial - and for partial, clearly list what currently fails/is missing. it's not rocket science

patrick_h_lauke,
@patrick_h_lauke@mastodon.social avatar

@yatil @aardrian just expand the approach and presentation of https://a11ysupport.io/ basically...

patrick_h_lauke,
@patrick_h_lauke@mastodon.social avatar

@yatil @aardrian wonder if it's worth me just crafting a diplomatically worded (HAH) issue on their github repo...just to at least put it down "on paper" how currently the resource is less than ideal and what would actually help authors. sure, it'll be ignored or "we'll look into it at some point" ... but at least it's there for reference

patrick_h_lauke,
@patrick_h_lauke@mastodon.social avatar

@yatil @aardrian just to put it on record...i think i might. then in future i don't have to repeat myself and just point to the issue (like i do with most things that are borked...sigh)
