Just back from A&E. I had a terrible pain in my bum. The doctor made me touch my toes, put his hand up and, after a few minutes of strenuous effort, he pulled out a lettuce leaf. "It feels much better, thank you!" I exclaimed. He replied, "I'm sorry, Bruce, but this is just the tip of the iceberg".

I've finally taken the protective hessian wrap off the section of lime-mortared boundary/retaining wall we had rebuilt back in the autumn. We're on a slope so the wall on our side, the other side, is a good 60cm taller than pictured. For the sake of my bank balance, I wish we'd just put a fence up, but that didn't seem the right thing to do.

patrick_h_lauke,
@patrick_h_lauke@mastodon.social avatar

@pete i'd have gone for a gabion basket approach (big fan of those, used them back in our old house extensively), but that'd obviously give off a different (industrial) vibe

Thinking back to that time when WCAG 2.2 first went to review and French company , best known for its SLAPPs, asked to get a side-door added to WCAG for overlays:

@SteveFaulkner @jakobrosin Hi. May I ask for a bit of help?
A friend @LALegault is claiming that Alt text helps AI training, and that "may" be its primary purpose. I'm disagreeing.
Please advise. Feel free to mediate, or to make a ruling.

@Tony_Meredith @SteveFaulkner @jakobrosin @LALegault "may" in what sense? text alternatives are for people who can't see an image. whether machine learning bots can also make use of it or not is, at best, a side effect...

I always want to start conversations about WCAG/guidance changes that I would like to see in the A11y Slack, but I feel like most folks want to talk about compliance instead.

For example: I want a link element to respond to the same keyboard keys as a button element does.

Another example: I think if you have alt="" and role="none" it is an acceptable demonstration of author intent and should not fail validators.

patrick_h_lauke,
@patrick_h_lauke@mastodon.social avatar

@a11yMel true, but it hurts users more immediately in the short term

patrick_h_lauke,
@patrick_h_lauke@mastodon.social avatar

@a11yMel sure, but as browser developers...

"ok, so from tomorrow, we all stop correcting this particular thing silently, and show broken webpages to our users?"
"do we all have to do it?"
"yes, otherwise people will stop using our product and use yours instead because to them 'it makes the webpage work while browser X shows it all broken/wrong"

not an easy sell...

patrick_h_lauke,
@patrick_h_lauke@mastodon.social avatar

@a11yMel thinking back to the "once we use xhtml 1.1, we'll process it as actual XML, so any validation error should just show an error message and nothing else" days and how that bombed rather quickly...

It's clear the "Turing Test" is failing, just as it failed with the Eliza chatbot back in the 1960s. People are just too easily fooled.

For me the REAL test occurs when an "AI" is NOT speaking to you. What does it do with it's free time?

@rianrietveld i got tired of having to re-explain this over and over and over again to folks ... so finally have a link i can just send them to and go about my day. was also good to kickstart the conversation at browser/working group level to hopefully get this all a bit more up-front and clarified in the specs ... watch this space

Oh, people, please stop this approach of "that semantic role name sounds about right to what I am looking for, or what it looks like" when using ARIA.

No, a container of a carousel with separate slides in it is not a listbox.

This "dangerous half-knowledge" of ARIA once again easily replaced my Sunday morning coffee.
