Made a goofy web toy that slices up one image and tries to use it to make another. Fun and occasionally nightmare-inducing! https://potch.me/toys/image-recycler/

thinking (and reading) about it more, I think there’s room for a polling “feediverse” as a companion to the push-based fediverse. the problems of scale with RSS/polling feeds are problems the average normal person’s web server and push a ton of complexity onto individual publishers, who either have to join a managed instance to participate or sign up for a security/maintenance treadmill. would still build on the Activity Streams standards.

@evan @evanp I do believe that smaller AP actors are possible and that the ergo for lots of users are well met by AP clients/servers in the market! I’m just also a big believer in static files as a hallmark of the long-lived web, and I think there’s room for both things

potch,
@potch@toot.cafe avatar

@evan @evanp I genuinely appreciate your willingness to look into the more passive/static use cases 💜

is there a way to be fediverse-compatible without having to run an expensive server? something FTP friendly with RSS-style read-only-ness?

potch,
@potch@toot.cafe avatar

it seems like you could publish an ActivityStreams Collection like an RSS feed on your personal site, but are people capable of ingesting that and seeing it in a way they would expect/desire?

I'm not a fediverse old-timer—I had a couple of accounts in 2018 but the servers went poof and I didn't re-establish till much later—but it seems very clear to me that the dominant culture for building feature- or reach-extending services is opt-in, not opt-out.

But every few months, another thing emerges that is opt-out and there's a super-predictable backlash and flame wars and egggghhh egh. Egh.

potch,
@potch@toot.cafe avatar

@kissane IME there’s a mismatch between Fediverse as a collection of standards and tech and Fediverse as culture and norms- the insistence that Threads implementing ActivityPub “isn’t fediverse” is culture-over-tech, or bridging being antithetical etc. it’s gonna keep rearing its head as the people who desire the scale/ergo of twitter etc try to use/extend fediverse tech to do so and clash with the people who are very happy with the current scale/reach and see it as a feature.

I was worried by Arc (desktop)'s success/hype that all new browser innovation was just going to be new UIs for Chrome, but seeing The Browser Company committed to torching their goodwill and business on AI shit is honestly a relief.

hot take: everyone who uses automation to make MFA easier is fucking up their security by colocating their auth. It's a second discrete device/app for a good reason. take the moment to type a few numbers, you'll survive

potch,
@potch@toot.cafe avatar

@est the better the separation of the two factors the better- a separate app is probably fine (if I'm MFAing into a mobile app I'm not switching to a second phone after all), but people who put their MFA codes in their password keepers next to their passwords ruin half the value of two separate factors, which is that they're separate. It helps that one factor is constantly changing or w/e but it's still much weaker than before.
