Looking for #SelfHosted advice: Thinking of binning my home-made Ansible setup of various docker containers in favour of something more off the shelf.

Any recommendations for user-friendly orchestration systems that work well across multiple nodes so that I can cluster my various raspberries pi?

I think Portainer can do it, are there others?

psfshr,
@psfshr@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Floppy Think it depends on what you mean by ‘orchestrate’ and ‘cluster’.
If you mean another way to manage a bunch of docker hosts, then Portainer does give you a better UI, though I think it’s still largely compose based.
If you want proper clustering with all that jazz, then I suspect it’s something like Kubernetes with something like Ansible or Terraform on top to ‘orchestrate’.
Depends on what you’re trying to achieve 🤷🏻‍♂️

started offering in my area.

It sounded quite tempting until I looked closer at their terms.

Residential packages:

  • 24 month contract
  • price goes up a tenner a month if you roll off the end
  • Use of their router reqd

If you want a static IP, or to put the router in bridging mode, you need a business pkg, which are all symmetric, so cost a good chunk more.

I'd be paying more for less.

I think I'll stick with @aaisp and wait for Openreach to get FTTP rolled out round here.

@danieldurrans @ben
Last new build we had was the same, alternative local loop provider who had deals with 2 or 3 no-name ISPs plus themselves.
New build we’re in now is all BT OR FTTP, but it still took us 3-4 years to be able to get any other serious ISP than BT Retail.

People who run their own registrar need not answer this question ;)

Can anyone explain to me how these people sleep at night? I just don’t understand how a company that feeds kids can see a profit rise of 30% as anything other than a damning indictment of the quality of their food and treatment of their workers.

psfshr,
@psfshr@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Floppy @CatherineFlick I think many forget that any company which isn’t explicitly set up as a not-for-profit, charity, etc., generally is there to make money, it just depends how much and what they sacrifice to do it 🤷🏻‍♂️

(e.g. the assumption that newspapers are there to report news, rather than being there to make money - so do they then print news because it’s newsworthy, or because it’ll help make more money?)

I am so intensely sick of people sending out forms in docx and other crappy formats that can't reliably opened without getting screwed up. God forbid someone actually learn to use a fucking webform. Surely we should have moved beyond this by now.

Still think a quote should also be a reply, so the person being quoted is aware, but 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think I had a faster internet connection when I was on dialup than when staying in this hotel.

It's mind boggling that a hotel (generally business travellers) has awful internet in this day and age. I'm not even in the middle of nowhere.

You may have seen the news about the dissolution of the Open Collective Foundation. While this is really sad and will impact a lot of people, OCF is not @opencollective itself, but a fiscal host for US charities.

The platform we use to raise funds is NOT affected, and nor is our UK-based fiscal host, The Social Change Nest. We’re all good 😊

@Floppy Is this where someone adds the note that most Mastodon servers are privately run by individuals, and not corporations with deep pockets?
Individuals who have mortgages and who need to put food on the table like the rest of us 🙂
So if people haven't already considered donating to their local instance, maybe now is the time?

psfshr,
@psfshr@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Floppy I admit, it would be rather crass to suggest that a couple of $, €, or £ a month could make all the difference to keeping an instance going, so I shall not say any more 😁

I ordered something from Amazon EU earlier in the week. It was last tracked in Marseille, France, on Wednesday evening.

I am genuinely curious as to where it is... is it on the back of a lorry slowly making its way up through France?

Normally I expect a daily, at worst, tracking update from Amazon for stuff in the UK but as soon as something is non-UK it all gets a bit mysterious.

Is the UK just really good at tracking parcels?

psfshr,
@psfshr@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@danieldurrans Having shipped stuff to and from Portugal, yes 👍

Generally get a lot more detail within the UK, whereas PT generally just lists a single entry 🤷🏻‍♂️

I can't say I am keen on shops going paperless for receipts.

When buying online I accept the fact I have to give them personal details.

When buying in person I don't really want to be giving my email address out in the middle of a shop.

psfshr,

@danieldurrans I’m surprised the card/phone companies aren’t all over this. It would be relatively easy to do something linked to the card number to automatically generate and store a receipt online 🤷🏻‍♂️
