My “temporary” NAS is again reporting SMART failures in one of my drives and I’m back to wondering if this NAS is just a scam to sell more hard drives. I still haven’t come across a more permanent NAS solution I like the looks or cost of. Maybe I’m just not cut out for this kind of hardware responsibility.

I love the idea of having always available on-site replica of data, but I start to wonder if it should be a shared building utility like a central HVAC splits costs/betters outcomes.

One of the basics of selling a car privately online is the platforms advise you to, as much as possible, not take interactions with potential buyers off the platform (to direct email, etc.) That way they have a copy of the bulk of the discussion in case of fraud in either direction.

I’ve had a few people express interest in the car, but so far none have gone beyond asking me if it’s still available, and close to half have asked me to switch to direct communication, which I said no to.

@reay i do the entire transaction at the local office that handles vehicle registration, or, if that isn't reasonable, at one of the banks that will be handling the finances (even if they're paying actual cash you should meet at your bank so you can immediately deposit it)

if it's a situation where you're selling a vehicle with a lien, the registrar will require a letter saying it's been paid off, so, this takes patience from both parties to work out -- call the financial institutions for specific instructions. if someone bought my motorcycle, i would be having them cut a check in the bank's name with my lien or title number in the memo field, for example. this can actually be a same-day or next-day process despite the extra steps.

private vehicle trades are their own special hell. i haven't done one yet.

your registrar's office will have specific instructions on how to transfer title ownership 😉

since moving up here i haven't used my car for personal transportation whatsoever. not even once. work use ONLY. i either walk, ride motorbike, or bum a ride with my drone ^_^

Seems like most folks would do just fine with a normal car and a (possibly rented) trailer for the off-chance that they need to haul something dirty, rather than getting a pickup truck.

Or they could rent the pickup truck for that off-chance if it's even rarer.

@tk trucks are the most-sold new vehicles but they arent the most commonly driven things on the road. (in most places i've lived)

what i've always done is: take out the rear seats. you can fit more than a truckload of stuff in a coupe or sedan if you take out the rear seats. modern truck beds are extremely short so it's easy to carry more stuff than a brand new F-150 can carry 🤣

@tk yep that works and will let you double your carrying capacity. i'm also a fan of those small metal cargo shelves that go in to a tow hitch to let you carry a few extra m3 of cargo 😍

down south, my family has one truck that we share around, but otherwise we all drive efficient coupes and hybrids.

i have acquired the IBM PS/1

it has a first generation Sound Blaster 16 in it

floppy drives look to be the original equipment

no hard drive, i think i have a period appropriate replacement that may even work

it looks like a scrapper rather violently removed all the cables except power, dislodging the expansion riser in the process

so i have to replace all those, dunno if i still have a stash of them somewhere

has a 12-10-92 date stamp on the case cover, chips on the board have date stamps as late as 40th week 1992, so looks like this thing was built in Oct 1992

perhaps this was someones Christmas '92 present 🎄🎁

CDROM has a manufacture date of Jan 1993, so it was upgraded quickly or perhaps it sold later as a post-christmas clearance deal 🙃

this probably came with Windows 3.1, and would have been a fairly high end machine at the time

@Seg @philpem Back In My Day i used to mainline a 486 and honestly if you have the memory (and you do), it's best to go right to 98se, it's more or less stable but still quite usable on that class of machine. 95 is an exercise in frustration and always has been and it makes me sad tbh
