I'm one of those IT professional by day, musician by night people you hear about. I occasionally post random techy type things that interest me, but mostly I post music playlists I'm listening to and links to my own music. I'm not really a Twitter refugee as I never used Twitter much, though Twitter IS the reason I moved to Mastodon. This is my third Mastodon instance, so hopefully third time is the charm. Check out my featured hashtags for common hashtags that I post.

This profile is from a federated server and may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.

Does anyone on also use in our fine of platforms? I'm looking for for to join. Are there any I should be looking at instead? Did I use enough in this post?

pyutaros,

@Mrfunkedude thanks. I had checked the second link, but will definitely check out the first. Much appreciated.

I really like and ethos around here so much better than the ‘other’ site(s), BUT….. the engagement and interactions are SO much less. What am I missing and are there some tips and tricks I should be using to turn that experience around?

Here are a few hashtags for visibility on the things I most often comment on and talk about.

pyutaros,

@jasonelrod hash tags are definitely key here, but I've never had much engagement anywhere I post, so... 🤷‍♂️

Was listening to this song by one of my favorites, Elizabeth Cotten, and her granddaughter, Brenda Evans. Of course, I went to the Googles to learn more about them as a combo and then I came across this post I found on DeadHeadLand. I normally wouldn't repost an anecdote like this, but I did a moderate bit of searching to confirm and it seems legit. (Part 1)

pyutaros,

So many black artists have had their work copied or even outright stolen over the years with absolutely no compensation, so it's nice to see a story like this one:

"Celebrating Elizabeth Cotten who was born over 125 years ago this week. (As of Jan 2022) Jerry Garcia was a big fan of Cotten's, so much so, that he did his own rendition to her song 'Shake Sugaree'.

pyutaros,

Although the Grateful Dead played their version 'Sugaree' for years and recorded it on a few different albums, Miss Cotton never received royalties for her work. In Miss Cotton's later years she worked as an in-house maid and nanny for a man who was a dead head. When the man figured out just who Miss Cotton was, he did everything possible to try to get Miss Cotton royalties for her work.

pyutaros,

The man wrote the record companies, the Grateful Dead organization and anyone else who could possibly help get Miss Cotton some royalties for 'Sugaree'. He finally wrote Jerry Garcia. To the man's surprise, he received a response from Garcia within days. In the letter Garcia was delighted to hear that Miss Cotton was still alive and he explained what an influence she had been on him and his guitar style.

pyutaros,

Garcia went on to explain that the royalties for "Sugaree" were under the record label's control so it was out of his hands but if Miss Cotton would allow him to record 'Oh Babe it Ain't No Lie' he would make sure that she received 100% of the royalties. From then until the end of her life she received a monthly check. One of Miss Cotton's friend asked her 'How you getting this money to buy all this new stuff?' Elizabeth Cotton replied, 'Some dead people out of San Francisco send it to me."

pyutaros,

@thepoliticalcat I know! I thought it was such a cool story.

pyutaros,

@SRDas @thepoliticalcat Holy cow! The universe made it happen! I had no idea!

  • pyutaros,

@AAKL @zdnet honestly, it couldn't be much worse than the corporate playlists that dominate the airwaves. And technically, I already listen to AI driven radio, as I primarily stream music using services like Plex and Tidal.

    pyutaros,

@AAKL @zdnet trust me, I am not a fan of this overzealous GPT LLM craze we're currently in. There's kind of a lot of caveats I would supply to my answer.

    1. If the radio show had playlists that were driven entirely by the DJ who was broadcasting, I would be completely against replacing them with an AI.
    2. Even if the playlists were completely AI driven, I would not be interested in hearing an AI talk in between songs. I would much rather hear from a person their perspective of the music.
    pyutaros,

@AAKL @zdnet 3) I don't have much use for radio at all with the advent of streaming services. The last thing I want to hear when listening to music is a bunch of people chattering in between songs. I DO lament that this kind of means the end of "radio" as we know it. But then again, I haven't listened to "radio" in years, at least not regularly and on purpose.

    pyutaros,

    @AAKL @zdnet agreed.
