Any suggestions for cheap but decent laptops for coding?

I’m currently learning how to code (currently Python, then maybe JavaScript), but I’m not always around my desktop, and learning on my phone is not always an option (also, it can be quite cumbersome at times). Therefore, I’m looking into purchasing a laptop just for learning how to code and stuff....

ranok,

The Intel ones are quite a bit easier, but still not as easy as a PC. You need to disable some FW security settings to allow for a non Apple kernel to boot.

ranok,

Thank you! I had a timer to eat something every 45 min, no sleep which was tough towards the end. It’s very different from a marathon, you’re going slower and it’s a lot more about keeping consistent with eating and caring for small things early. This was late in the season so cold and wet!

ranok,

The winner finished in 19 ish hrs, I was at 30.5. The first 40 mi were easy to keep a pace for around 24hr, but then as the legs got tighter, the weather cooler and wetter I couldn’t keep the pace up and had to walk the up hills.

ranok,

I was eating wheat thins and Oreos on the trail, broth and ramen noodles in aid stations. I was not a fast finisher, came in 31st in 30.5hr.

The biggest small thing is skin care. On a short race you can manage a little chaffing or a hot spot, for longer races taking the 3min to Vaseline or clean whatever is rubbing before it turns bloody is worth it

I actually didn’t sleep too well because my legs aches and I had an early flight home, maybe 7hr, don’t remember any dreams.

ranok,

Pretty niche, but a citrus squeezer. I cook a lot of Asian food and it’s much better to put half a lime in the squeezer at a time than try and hand squeeze the juice out.

ranok,

Almost the same, but the RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid. 50mi electric range, AWD, we almost never have to fill it and there’s free slow chargers in our town!

a want to buy a tablet to take notes at school

Basically title, but I don’t want an iPad because of my “open source mindset” ik it sounds cringe but fr I hate Apple’s philosophy and I don’t want an iPhone to sync every shit. Also I’d like to have a tablet that doesn’t all my data to some big corporation (like Xiaomi or Google), and I don’t know where to start...

ranok,

I returned my Remarkable 2 after a couple of days for a Supernote. Can do local network file transfer, and wifi screen sharing.

ranok,

Supernote is the alternative I went with. They have a pretty responsive dev team and the cloud integration is optional, you can push stuff over the local WiFi network.

ranok,

I work mostly from home, so no commute. I do pay for 2 days/wk at the co-working space either 7 or 30mi away (so 15-35min). I have an electric scooter that goes 65mph and an incredible view on my commute (see attached from Tuesday’s drive), so I enjoy it and the chance to be social with the people at the cowork space. https://sopuli.xyz/pictrs/image/d77d0846-efbc-41cb-a118-8e1ff90b09c8.jpeg

ranok,

It weighs about 150lbs, I don’t go max speed on windy days, but it’s a nice ride

ranok,

We got a Baby Bjorn carrier 2nd hand, and it’ll certainly go to another family, and another, and another…

ranok,

I’ve had mine for almost 15 yr, same as you, still works like it’s new. I also have a Benchmade knife that I carry all the time that’s unmarred by time.

ranok,

How do you like your carbon steel pans? I got one and despite following all the seasoning instructions it never releases food easily so I don’t use it very often.

Am I okay without a VPN on public networks if I use HTTPS?

I keep hearing on VPN ads that you have to use a VPN to not have your login information stolen. So far I have been using Cloudflare WARP to be safe enough. However, if I am using an HTTPS website, do I really need a VPN or WARP? Will an attacker on the same network as me be able to access passwords transmitted over HTTPS?

ranok,

This is pretty misleading due to its brevity, an attacker on the same network can determine what website you’re going to but not the content being exchanged. A VPN moves the threat of having your browsing destination determined to the VPN provider from the local network.

That said, modern WiFi encryption does prevent other devices on the network from eavesdropping, so the attacker would have to employ a more involved attack (e.g. ARP spoofing) in order to even see the destinations.

ranok,

It runs well enough in Windows Subsystem for Android!

ranok,

I’m surprised not to see cryptpad.fr here, a FOSS, self-hostable E2EE web based office suite. Not as feature rich as GDocs but offers the basics in a more secure manner.
