I continue to be stunned by the bullshit that is Apple Music. I’m on a plane, I want to listen to some music. The only track I can actually play is one I played to a friend an hour before I got on the flight, because nothing else is “authorised”. I will add, this is “my” music that I bought off iTunes.

(I know technically I don’t own it, I license it, Apple sucks, blah blah, please fuck off with your Mastodon neckbeardism that’s not the point.)

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

What I want to know is how do I actually get this to work? Is it supposed to be possible to listen to music while in flight mode? What goat do I have to sacrifice? I haven’t been able to play an arbitrary song from my own library (including albums I’ve ripped off CD and synced through iTunes Match) for about a decade now. If nobody else can either why aren’t there mobs in Cupertino with torches and pitchforks?

After wandering around the cute little alleys behind the fancy shopping district in Barcelona for a while, it’s striking how fucking obnoxious the traffic noise is when you get back to the through-streets.

In theory, an M4 iPad with 16GB ram and the Magic Keyboard can completely replace my mac, and it is more versatile because it’s an iPad. It needs to run Xcode with at least all the SwiftUI related components, Instruments, and a terminal for git, and have some means of real filesystem based apps so that something like „Tower for iPad“ is possible. It shouldn’t be overwhelmend with outlandish tasks like „using some program to create graphical assets for use in an Xcode project“.

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@krzyzanowskim @gernot Hahaha no it’s not, try to “import XCTest”
in Xcode Playgrounds and see how far you get. When did it last get an update anyhow?

both telegram and matrix have untrustworthy cryptography, but telegram has gaslit me significantly fewer times and generally not on an ongoing basis, which is really the main thing i care about in a messenger

"it's vulnerable to IND-CCA3" anybody who can pull off that attack on me deserves whatever they get out of it. i just want a messenger that isn't built by americans who have a Single Phone Number and also doesn't gaslight me. is that too much to ask for?

@Halle Re our conversation about how the Vision Pro could get lighter, Gruber points out that the M4’s display driver was required to run the fancy doubled-up OLED display of the new iPad Pro. What other product needs a doubled-up display driver? 🤔 Seems pretty likely they’ll jump straight to M4 for the next Vision iteration. Maybe it’ll run cool enough?

When cussing out cars I have to remember that in current temperatures people have their windows open and can hear me. Today a car was blocking the cycling path; the passenger window opened, a woman cursed at me in Turkish and then she sprayed windshield fluid aimed at me.

I did this for the buttons on my standing desk, but the adhesive wasn’t that good and they fell off after not too long. In the end, I wound up leaving the desk in standing mode most of the time so I haven’t needed to figure out a more permanent solution anyway.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@danluu/112418095002975740

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@alpha @danluu My standing desk (Jarvis) has the excellent affordance of the touch button to make it go up being on the bottom of the control widget, and the touch button to make it go down is on the top of the widget (it sticks out at a 30º angle underneath the desk.) So you “pull” it up and “push” it down with a fingertip. Don Norman would approve.

Just. Wow. Massive sunspot group Active Region 3664 has grown in recent days to over ~200,000 km in size, large enough to span over half the distance between the Earth and the Moon. The spot is crackling with potential to unleash more X-class flares, and is thankfully rotating away from us. I can easily see the spot with eclipse glasses today from here in central Germany… no magnification required. SDO’s view is equally amazing:

@AstroDave That it’s half the distance from earth to the moon, but it’s still only, what, a sixth (?) of the diameter of the Sun breaks my brain.
