I've been seeing one of these 'Confirm Device Password' prompts on all of my devices, and my familyโ€™s, since that botched HomeKit upgrade last year ๐Ÿ‘€ It keeps coming back every few days (alongside 'error adding X to Homeโ€™ prompts). I'm afraid that ignoring it is going to leave iCloud sync in a broken state, but no update since has fixed the issue

Iโ€™m on vacation for the next week. :)

(So if I donโ€™t reply to some question about passkeys or something, thatโ€™s why.)

If you ask me a question on social media and I donโ€™t respond, it likely means one of:

  1. I was really busy and didnโ€™t see it.
  2. Itโ€™s not something I can comment on (almost always because you asked me what my employerโ€™s future plans are).
  3. You are a journalist that I am not personally acquainted or friends with. (Sorry, Iโ€™m not supposed to directly engage!)

I am convinced that within the last two days, YouTube rolled out a change to its website that makes it less likely for space to pause a video. Instead, Iโ€™m scrolling the page down much more often now. D:

@stroughtonsmith This is a really good tip.

Passkeys will be importable and exportable, cross-device, and across passkey managers. They arenโ€™t at this time, but they will be. Itโ€™s something thatโ€™s being defined and designed.

And amazingly, me saying this isnโ€™t news. Some companies and folks are already on the record about this. :)

@matdevdug What design doc are you talking about? Was it related to โ€œpasskeysโ€, or just โ€œFIDO/WebAuthnโ€?

Today marks three years since the start of Appleโ€™s โ€œPassword Manager Resourcesโ€ open source project. Working with 1Password, Dashlane, and others to make password management better for everyone has been awesome. https://github.com/apple/password-manager-resources/commit/f74c6d0c1488ed8653ebf81d9512a883f2055441

Huge day for passkeys!

Starting today, you can set up a passkey for your Google account. At this stage of the industry-wide transition, setting up a passkey doesnโ€™t invalidate your password, so itโ€™s 100% safe to set up. https://blog.google/technology/safety-security/the-beginning-of-the-end-of-the-password/

Iโ€™m a huge proponent of bringing your true and whole self to work, but did I ever tell yโ€™all about the time that my manager asked me if I was ready to receive my annual performance review and I responded with, โ€œFuck me up, famโ€?

Thereโ€™s a time and a place, Ricky. A time and a place.

YouTube recommended a video to me thatโ€™s a full cover of Coldplayโ€™s album, โ€œA Rush of Blood to the Headโ€, performed with the Super Mario 64 soundfont. It is predictably comforting. Hereโ€™s a link to โ€œIn My Placeโ€, my favorite Coldplay song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0lhi2awnc0&t=311s

So, whatโ€™ll support passkeys first? Bluesky or Mastodon? Whichever it is will have all of my love.

rmondello,
@rmondello@hachyderm.io avatar

@urschrei Security keys and passkeys are different things. A security key is a physical, dedicated device that you purchase, and is frequently used as 2FA, on top of a password.

A passkey is a password replacement that's unphishable and managed like password in a password manager.

Security keys and passkeys are built on similar technology, but the user journeys and expectations are completely different.

rmondello,
@rmondello@hachyderm.io avatar

@steveriggins Weโ€™re still pretty early on. Google isn't fully done shipping passkey support on their platforms and Microsoft hasn't started.

But I have it on good authority that youโ€™ll be seeing more passkey rollouts as time goes on.

rmondello,
@rmondello@hachyderm.io avatar

@Loredo @mjgardner @Lapfelix Correct, there isn't a way for the software to know that.

Using a passkey on top of a password is like hitting a nail with your bare hand first before hitting it with a proper hammer.
