I’m at Crawley STEM fest and the Thales kids quiz thing has this question in it. I am unreasonably angry.

Confused this morning after looking at my energy usage on the Octopus app. I have exported a lot of electricity this month, and imported very little. Yet my earnings were minimal and my payments a lot higher than expected.

It turns out the app has swapped the order it gives each reading has been swapped around. Phew!

Briefly back onto the Farnsworths. Finished both cases, but one of the displays died, and the replacement sent was wrong. So waiting (again) to get the second one running.

Moved the Strowger script and the test card script onto an Internet facing server. Currently, I can only try the test card and remote loop back.

As the sheet of insulation gets smaller, and the walls filled, I get more and more sure that I don't have enough. It is going to be close. But I think I am going to end up having to buy another sheet just for a few square centimeters.

Makes you think, How many eclipses have you missed because they happened at night ?

semachthemonkey,
@semachthemonkey@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Extelec
Yeah, but it isn't as spectacular when the sun traverses past the moon.

semachthemonkey,
@semachthemonkey@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Extelec
That's why they plan it for night time. They don't want us to see how spectacular it is. (And I'm not sure those little cardboard eclipse glasses would hold up too well either)

Damnit! Despite my solar panels and battery storage giving me a few days of grid-free electricity recently, today isn't going to be one of them.
6:55 battery still running
7:00 battery depleted :-(
7:05 first power from solar panels
7:25 solar power exceeds house usage
7:30 excess power charging the battery

I know I shouldn't worry about the 1.42 pence this is costing me for grid electric. But it's the principal!

zoomed in graph showing the point where battery power runs out and electricity is drawn from the grid. very shortly after that solar power starts to be generated, and as it does so grid energy is reduced. there is a small amount of power being put in to the battery to the right of the graph.

With all of the discussion about the possibility of an extra leap second. I wonder how many know about the second that is removed from GMT every leap year. This is the first second after 12:00PM on the 31st of March.

Due to the way that GMT was created in 1847, The Railways made a mistake and started one 1/4 second early.

To counteract this every leap year GMT misses a second.

This is usually is overlooked as the UK has already swapped to BST

1/2

semachthemonkey,
@semachthemonkey@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Extelec
I witnessed that immediately after midnight on 31st of March it did indeed miss a second. I have been doing some investigation though, and I don't believe that second has actually been removed.

I think the second has actually been relocated. If my prediction is correct, I expect that precisely after midnight tonight the second will appear. And it will stay for 24 hours until third of April.

Seeing being mentioned, and pleased to see that our policy of non-federation still seems to be the right approach after Meta has:

  • ignored widespread anti-trans content
  • snooped on people using their VPN
  • silently filtered out "political" content from Instagram/Threads feeds

Happy with our choice to keep all that bullshit well away from our community here.

We'll link up when they bring something positive to the Fediverse. As before, I wouldn't hold your breath.

So. Who had unplanned laser eye surgery on their schedule today.

I didn't this morning.

But there we go.

semachthemonkey,
@semachthemonkey@mastodon.me.uk avatar

Thanks for the good wishes yesterday.

I started the day with a trip to the opticians yesterday morning for a fairly routine eye exam. Next thing I know I am on my way to hospital for emergency appointment. Torn retina which resulted in laser surgery yesterday evening.

Things are much better today, although my eye is understandably sore.

Excellent work by the NHS staff at QMC.
