Musical Dictator, Argonotes, the Until Recently Toronto Argonauts Band. And I work at that fruit company you might know.

I took the photo above when I was 9. It's Apollo XI, on the way to the moon. (I have a better camera now.)

The "Y" that begins most Canadian airport codes (e.g. Toronto: YYZ, Montreal: YUL) stands for - I kid you not - "Yes”

Did some calendar math and I think today is the day that I've spent exactly half of my life working for Apple (and NeXT before that.)

What were you doing half your life ago?

I'm fortunate to be married to someone willing to go along with whatever dumb idea pops into my head.

People sometimes make overly dramatic, theatrical statements at the equator. This is known as the “Coriolanus Effect.”

Hello from the actual equator I thought there’d be a line in the ocean. There is on the darn maps.

Travel Poetry Day Three Or Whatever, I'm Losing Track

Today on Isla Floreana
We saw more flora and fauna
Sea lions, boobies, and flamingos
Learned their names in local lingos
Even penguins! That's cathartic
Now we don't need to cruise Antarctic.

Attention Fans: Inspired by https://nflscorigami.com, I have built a CFL Scorigami table, showing the number of times each score has occurred since 1950. Winner across the top, loser down the side. Partial excerpt attached.

The blue cell shows that last night's EDM 24 HAM 10 score has occurred 12 times, while the orange score of 28-5 has never occurred - and the yellow 1-0 happened once.

I’ll do my best to alert you if a CFL Scorigami occurs -a score that has never happened before.

“Responsible sports wagering is such a deeply personal and meaningful way for fans to connect with the greater story of our league.”

Can I just say: boooo. It’s a way for people who aren’t fans to annoy those that are. https://www.cfl.ca/2023/08/01/neo-bet-joins-forces-w-cfl-to-expand-options-for-bettors-in-ont/

there is very little in the community that's more pathetic than Edmonton "fans” claiming they bailed on the team when the name was changed and whining about bringing the old inappropriate name back.

Changing to Elks was the right thing to do, it was a well-executed new branding, it IS the old team name (from the 1920s) -- and it's not why you're losing.

note I don't know why you ARE losing but every team goes through a dark period. It's your turn. Shut up about the name already.

Best part of F1 at the Monaco Grand Prix is the live band - the Prince's Band of Carabiniers - on hand to perform the winner's anthem. Come on, Olympics, figure this out.

Close up of the brass section in the Prince's Band of Carbiniers playing at the Monaco Grand Prix

shayman,
@shayman@cosocial.ca avatar

People say "Steve, how would an Olympic band possibly know all 200 anthems?". Well - I have given this some thought - at any event, there are only a handful of countries likely to win a gold medal. Practice the top 20 anthems, and in the time between an event and the medal ceremony, you could duck out and learn the anthem of Peru in a hurry if necessary.

shayman,
@shayman@cosocial.ca avatar

@timbray True, the job of the librarian to put all the music together - and make sure you actually had the correct anthem as these things change and you wouldn't want to cause an international incicent - would be the toughest.

I'd us amateurs though. Or school bands. There are community bands all over the place that would drool at the chance to play at the Olympics.

Well, hello there. Came over here from a different instance because I like this Worthwhile Canadian Initiative.

Me? Former leader of Argonotes, the Toronto Argonauts Band, which folded a few years ago after 22 years; I keep thinking about reviving it. You'll see me going on and on about the when the season gets going again. go argos go.

Also I've worked for that big fruit company for close to 30 years, which has been a pretty amazing journey.
