Musical Dictator, Argonotes, the Until Recently Toronto Argonauts Band. And I work at that fruit company you might know.

I took the photo above when I was 9. It's Apollo XI, on the way to the moon. (I have a better camera now.)

Explosion on the Rainbow Bridge connecting New York and Ontario at Niagara. Reports from the scene say a car crashed into the toll booth and exploded. Despite the misinformation machine on Twitter, there's no confirmation that this was a car bomb (though, of course, that's possible.) Niagara Gazette has some good reporting form the ground: https://www.niagara-gazette.com/news/local_news/update-witnesses-saw-smoke-fire-from-vehicle-at-rainbow-bridge/article_eb3ffec8-8957-11ee-93e5-cf9e52289455.html

My thanks to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats organization, all the volunteers, and especially all the fans who have made this Grey Cup Festival a lot of fun. Even wearing Argo gear around town, I haven't heard the traditional statement about the Argos that much; the Sask band was cheered in the Winnipeg party, the fans everywhere are getting along just great, celebrating this game that we all love.

This video from 15 years ago still chokes me up. This is OUR league.

@LittleTokyo it really is great - I think most of these fans want the CFL to succeed and are silently rooting for all the teams to sell out every home game.

trivia for you. When Winnipeg plays Montreal on Sunday, they will become the first CFL team to have played every other current* CFL team in the Grey Cup.

Yes, not only will they have finally played all the East teams, they've also played every other West division team in the Grey Cup. Winnipeg was in the East for a while and frequently won the East final.

Ha, ha, Canada, what with your drastically lower expense of healthcare to taxpayers and universal coverage and now proof that government regulation produced a dramatically lower rate of car theft! ha ha! ha. oops.

Via @nickheer, how a small but critical regulatory change among cars sold in Canada nearly two decades ago plugged a gaping hole that remains in U.S. autos: https://www.vice.com/en/article/7kxdmx/one-regulation-could-have-stopped-a-nationwide-car-theft-wave-why-dont-we-have-it

@glennf @nickheer Canadian car thieves have moved on to higher end cars and fancier techniques, alas. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/toronto-police-recover-stolen-vehicles-1.7007483

@shayman@cosocial.ca avatar

@nickheer @glennf Thanks for that - apologies, I didn't read far enough into the story.

I happen to live in a town in Canada with a car theft epidemic where the car I drive is #1 on the list, so this topic gets me a little itchy. (fortunately, my car is 13 years old so no discerning thief would want it.)

Saw a complaint from a local parent that they'd put out a bowl of candy last night and "those darn punk teenagers ran off with the whole bowl."

OK, yes, the punks shouldn't have done that, but come on, the whole deal with Trick or Treat is that you are supposed to actually greet the kids and interact with them and make comments about their costume and maybe deliberately guess wrong about what it is. It's not just "leave free candy on the porch night".

also potatoes

shayman, to random
@shayman@cosocial.ca avatar

The final tally:
Chocolate bars: 28
Potatoes: 13

That was lots of fun. (Especially for the parents on the sidewalk shouting "Potato!" when they heard me describe the options, and the two teenage girls who said "Oooh, now we can make poutine!" - and it would have been closer if one young lad had not been forced by his mom to put back the two potatoes he chose.)

@MoonRaccoon Once I explained to the kids that the potatoes were available in potato flavour, that helped too!

Since leaving Twitter, I've been trying to figure out what my journalism-y socials look like. (Threads: A sad Potemkin village where I just share articles. Bluesky: A fun, bitchy hotel cafeteria that still seems ill-suited to news.) I've been trying to use Mastodon for more hard news stuff, but I'm having a hard time getting my feed to be both active and relevant.

So I'm trying a few experiments to see if I can rejig my good. If you've got good journalism follow suggestions, send em my way.

Nooo! After 80 years, CBC Radio stops broadcasting the Official Time Signal. The beginning of the long dash used to indicate exactly 1 PM Eastern Time. The longest running show on the CBC.

They could have at least invited some guest artists to perform the beep for the final week.

The "Y" that begins most Canadian airport codes (e.g. Toronto: YYZ, Montreal: YUL) stands for - I kid you not - "Yes”

shayman,
@shayman@cosocial.ca avatar

@tapforms I imagine when they were assigning two-letter codes to weather stations in the 1930s, little Malton, Ontario got "YZ" because people thought “Who cares, it's arbitrary, normal people are never going to use this, and besides, we are using "TO" for the downtown train station already”
