What an amazing treat to learn that InfiniteMac.org now has versions of NeXTSTEP that run in your browser. Amazing.

https://blog.persistent.info/2024/03/infinite-mac-nextstep.html

Of course I had to fire up NeXTSTEP 3.3 to see if this was still in there ... I wonder what happened to that other guy?

My ideal iPad is a 15" iPad Pro with an M4 Pro, combined with a Magic Keyboard with 2 Thunderbolt ports (that do both data & power) and a built-in second battery, that can run macOS and all my legacy software/workflows in a virtual machine, and can be operated entirely in clamshell mode from an external monitor. A drafting table when I need it, a pro workstation when I need that.

If such a machine existed, I would never buy a Mac again. That's what I've wanted on my desktop for the past decade

stroughtonsmith,
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@dp who cares? The last Mac I bought was €1,200; an iPad of that kind of caliber is for sure a €4,000+ device, and Apple takes 30% of all third-party revenue from it. Why would Apple ever be happier selling me a Mac over an iPad?

stroughtonsmith,
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@vitor iPad battery is miserable compared to a MacBook, especially when you start multitasking. Doubling the battery life via the case would make a lot of sense, and it provides a heavier base to balance the weight better

Does launching a build with the debugger attached on Vision Pro take forever for anyone else? It's near instant on the simulator, but even after the data is transferred to the device, the actual launch screen hangs out for like 10 seconds (so I don't think dev strap would help?)

stroughtonsmith,
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig if you don't need the debugger for every build, you can untick the box in the run dialog and things should be pretty instant

stroughtonsmith,
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig there was a time, in the before times, when Xcode would build and run without the debugger by default, and everything was always instant 😌 But yeah it takes a lot to load up all the linked libraries in memory and get the debugger ready

If Apple's afraid of eating into Mac sales by putting macOS on iPad, just put the Hypervisor and Virtualization frameworks on iPadOS so third parties like Parallels can virtualize Windows 11 or Linux instead. Windows, at least, is much better suited for a touchscreen than macOS is. Let the developer/userbase validate the concept if you won’t — is a virtual desktop good or bad for the iPad platform?

Someday Ubisoft will be able to afford voice actors native to the setting, instead of a dozen Canadians putting on mildly-racist accents, but not today!

iPad today is very reminiscent of the Mac of the 90s. A bewildering array of models and SKUs, a beloved operating system with core technology issues that severely limit the future of the product line, a dearth of the real apps professionals use, and a strong emphasis on the handful of creative niches it's carved out for itself. Unlike the 90s, though, all of these problems are masked by the success of the low-end. If you split iPad Pro out into its own product category, it would be in trouble

stroughtonsmith,
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

If Apple weren't sitting on a massive treasure hoard of iPhone cash, if they actually had to fight to survive without the Mac to fall back on, iPadOS would have been on the chopping block long ago, much like classic Mac OS

Having read and watched through all the iPad coverage, it really seems like a lot of people are aligned on the top items where iPad falls down

• The Files app infrastructure
• The too-restrictive audio system
• Background processing
• Multiple user support

"Just put macOS on it” is the fallback for most criticism, because it's hard to articulate just why iPadOS doesn’t cut it. And the "Where's the Calculator?” discourse isn't about a calculator app, it's about the missing apps of the core OS

stroughtonsmith,
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

I know all rumors point to Apple having earnestly whipped up a Calculator app for iPadOS 18, but I think that's missing the forest for the trees. The Calculator is just a prominent, easy to name example of the parts of OS that are lacking, a euphemism for the state of iPad. As soon as we have a Calculator, another app will take its place in the meme. It was Final Cut, it was Logic, it is Xcode, it was once Photoshop, and more

Maybe Apple's problem is that it has too many absurdly wealthy old white people making the decisions? What's a $3,000 iPad to an executive?

If you've ever been curious what happened to the rumored 'TextEdit for iOS' from way back — it worked, it was likely somebody's pet project to test certain APIs and never intended for release, and it's barely more than a UlTextView w/ Files support. It might still be included in AppleInternal versions of the OS, today.

I'm with @viticci: I would love a fully-functioning TextEdit for iOS

I know people like to think iPadOS 'forked' from iOS when it was renamed a few years back, but it really didn’t. If you install Xcode, both iPhone and iPad simulators run out of the exact same OS root. It's the same set of apps, the same SpringBoard — it just decides which features you get at runtime based on screen size and a feature map. That's not a fork; the name essentially means nothing. A brand new $4,000 iPad runs the same OS as your six year old phone

Broadcom ported my profile over from VMWare, and doesn't know how to handle my name now so I can't sign the download agreement. It also doesn't give me a way to edit my name, either 😛

I tried the support chat, and got an error instead.

What a shitshow.
