Back in the 1990s, I gave up trying to beat "Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels" (as it was known in the U.S., having been released only in revamped form on the console).

In 2023, thanks to the internet, I learned how to get 128 lives in level 1-1, and finally beat the game.

When I read that David Tennant was to play the 14th Doctor, I thought of two things: (1) when Rose asked him "Can you change back?" and he said "No." (2) My friend who didn't care about continuity and said "I want my pretty Doctor back" when Matt Smith took over. LOL

@mcoorlim I haven't seen anything beyond Whittaker's first season. I heard her tenure was a bit of a rollercoaster, but I'm keeping an open mind.

The problem with fans is that they aren't imaginative writers. They want the same thing over and again, which makes the universe very small. Imaginative writers enlarge it.

stylinstainless,
@stylinstainless@mastodon.online avatar

@mcoorlim

As long as it's a good story, I can let some things slide.

I remember having a discussion with a friend after two Doctors in a row saved the entire universe. How much higher can you raise the stakes? ("What more is there than the universe?" to borrow a Star Trek phrase.)

Sometimes I think the production office needs to listen to the Doctor: "Everything's important." Hell, the Fifth Doctor sacrificed himself to save one person and the story worked! In fact it's a fan favorite!

stylinstainless,
@stylinstainless@mastodon.online avatar

@mcoorlim Ah, so it's one of those "I AM the Doctor, whether you like it or not" moments, eh? I always felt that final scene in "The Twin Dilemma" was the producer thumbing his nose at the fans. Not the smartest thing to do...

One of the hardest things to cope with as a is when someone gives you a piece of copy that is written like a piece of 1930s newsreel, you're supposed to read it EXACTLY as written, and the client says "Make it really conversational."

If I had a nickel for every time I wanted to say "People don't speak like this!"

I'm beginning to think I should charge extra for that.

stylinstainless,
@stylinstainless@mastodon.online avatar

@mcoorlim That's awfully decent of you. :-)

I've half a mind to include a "bonus take" for the client with my own spin on it. They can take it or leave it. Maybe they just haven't worked with a lot of voice actors before so they don't know what to ask for. I like to give them the benefit of the doubt, y'know?

Of course as a musician music is special to me, but I mustn't forget that alongside that music 40,000 years ago was dance, storytelling, and more -- and of course the world's oldest art also predates written language. All of these things are inherently, ESSENTIALLY human. The arts aren't optional. We need them in our lives.

This is the typical "fuck you, I already got mine" attitude that enrages me about the wealthy and powerful.

@paisley_peinforte At this point, "I've got mine, fuck you" is the U.S. national motto.

And now for something more pleasant (some of you may be interested), this is the amount of work that goes into my DS9 upscaling BEFORE it actually gets upscaled: sharpening, anti-aliasing, a very slight contrast/brightness/saturation adjustment, and nonlinear unsharp masking to remove the overall haziness and darkness of the picture.

Quark from DS9, a frame from the DVD, processed as described in the Toot.

@Aaron Thanks! I enjoy working with video. Spent the last several years learning how -- but since I taught myself, lessons were slow and difficult. LOL

Anyone who seriously thinks "No one in their right mind should live in Florida/Texas/Name-Of-Red-State-Here" is ignoring millions of left-leaning, left-voting Americans. Do you want Nazi supermajorities in charge of all of those states and their electoral votes? You are suggesting that you throw your allies to the wolves. Why?

My wife's car wouldn't start today because she parked it Wednesday night with the courtesy lights on. I couldn't jump-start it with my car because I parked it, um, last April, and haven't touched it since then. Funny how time just gets away from me.

I have some work to do.

And it's the hottest part of the year.

Yikes.

folks, I need your help!

Did "The Rainbow" (TRS-80 Color Computer magazine) come with programs on cassette, or is my memory failing me?

I am trying to locate a song that was a "bonus" at the end of a cassette, and I can't find it anywhere!

Maybe I am thinking of the wrong magazine?

Thanks in advance!

stylinstainless,
@stylinstainless@mastodon.online avatar

@mcoorlim I looked it up and apparently there was a separate subscription service called "Rainbow on Tape." I think that's where it came from.

What stage of capitalism is it where they stop making movies about people and start making them about products? It started with 'The Social Network' and now we have "biopics" about Air Jordans, Blackberry, Tetris, and Flamin' Hot Cheetos. Please make it stop

@stylinstainless Hey question for you: How are you going about upscaling those DS9 DVDs? I’m thinking of giving it a try with my Sliders DVDs but don’t know how simple (or not) it is to do. Even getting them into a 1080 resolution that looks clean would be amazing.

stylinstainless,
@stylinstainless@mastodon.online avatar

@Aaron It's slow going because I haven't found a perfect solution yet. The early seasons suffer from problems the later ones don't, like rainbowing from tape-to-tape transfer. There's also tape noise, plus MPEG encoding noise and blockiness.

What I've settled on at the moment is cleaning up the source as much as I can and upscale using Avisynth, export to lossless via VirtualDub, use Topaz Video AI to denoise, then re-encode adding fake film grain to cover the remaining flaws. Not great.

TIL that I could use an animated .gif as my Mastodon avatar, so naturally I picked the old Netscape Navigator animation. :D

Really getting tired of having a damn headache every damn day. Been treated for a sinus infection. No more sign of infection, so why does my head still feel like it's full of goop? And why can't I do anything about it? Decongestants, antihistamines, NSAIDs -- nothing works. This is not the adulthood I wanted.

It's really unfortunate that Ron DeSantis is going to destroy everything left that's nice about the state of Florida just so that he can lose in the primaries to Tucker Carlson.
