Would be cool if we had vaccines that could be distributed by airplanes using crop sprayers.

We could vaccinate everyone and also wind up the chemtrails loons

@danjac Too bad it would be an incredibly inefficient delivery method.

As the parent of a Toddler, you get 5 spell slots between long rests.
You can use them to cast any of the following:

  1. Prestidigitation (Target: soggy cereal in shag carpet)

  2. Haste (to get home in time with the kid screaming PEE!!!)

  3. Convincing Argument ("Why can dogs pee on the street and I can't?")

  4. Patience (Range: Self)

  5. Sleep (repeat as needed)

  6. Control Self (and not eat an entire box of hidden cookies after bedtime)

Choose wisely.

mahal, to Israel

How many bones must toss us for us to realise the stupidity of running around in circles debating trolls and feeding into distractions? From the “baby killing” to the “sexual violence” misinfo to “HAMAS bombed Al-Ahli!” to a faux ceasefire.

We’re running around in fucking circles, and I bet the Israeli government is giggling in glee at us.

What will it take for us to realise that we must stop western funding, legitimisation, and aid to this genocide by ANY MEANS?

@danjac I'm honestly undecided between the "stupid" and the "malicious" explanation here. Let's go with the first as a generous default option.

szakib, to Electronics
@szakib@freeradical.zone avatar

Hey Fedi!

I have a weird question. There is a surge protector on my desk for all the electronics. One of its capacitors gives this very high-pitched, almost inaudible, but constant and thus super annoying whine.

Is there anything I can do to make it stop?

szakib,
@szakib@freeradical.zone avatar

@TT_392 I'm not a regular electronics tinkerer. Can I use a hot glue gun? Or insulation tape? Or masking tape, cellotape, anything else that I already have at home?

szakib,
@szakib@freeradical.zone avatar

@TT_392 I don't know what component it is. I was assuming it's a capacitor, because I know that those can make sounds like this, but I have not opened the case to see.

The existence of Suella Braverman and the Rohingya genocide prove that Buddhism does not make people nicer if those people are shitty to begin with.

In that sense it's no better or no worse than any other religion.

szakib,
@szakib@freeradical.zone avatar

@danjac It would be interesting to tally the number of people killed in the name of each religion and its loving god. 😂 (I did a quick search, have not found anything reliable.)

szakib,
@szakib@freeradical.zone avatar

@danjac Atheism was specifically a Soviet thing, it is not a core tenet of communism. They were not nice to religions and their followers, but as far as I know, there were no active campaigns to kill everybody who is religious. Not really comparable to the "holy wars" of the actual religions, with the intent to get all humanity into the church of the One True God, or a shallow grave.

Current workplace has insane number of meetings and nobody seems to think this an issue.

Other places I have worked this would be considered a serious problem. I guess agencies don't care as long as it's all billing hours.

szakib,

@danjac Would it be an option to decline at least some of those meetings?

I disagree with Gruber more often than not, but I think this is an accurate representation of what tech-adjacent people who aren’t web devs think of web dev

The problem is this is the only rational conclusion to draw from experiencing our work

szakib,
@szakib@freeradical.zone avatar

@baldur @danjac Since managers got mentioned, I have to say quite many of them are riding the hype train together with the senior devs. When I select tools, it takes a while, because I actually consider the long-term consequences. When I explain to my manager that this effort is crucial because it changes the productivity of many people for many years, I can often see in their eyes that it's the first time they even consider this.

@danjac @baldur Yeah, the cargo-culting is real!
My million-dollar productivity tip: choose something that is recent enough to be mainstream, but old enough to have documented solutions, main bugs fixed. Bonus points for some chance of the provider still being in business in 5 years. 😂

Hilariously, Apple tried to claim with a straight face to the EU, that it offers not one, but three distinct web browsers all coincidentally named Safari.

Lucky for us the team at the EC dismissed this ludicrous gambit and painstakingly ripped Apple's argument to shreds. It is baffling to us why Apple's legal team is willing to sacrifice their credibility on something that has such a low chance of success.

The Tories' greatest skill (with the help of the press barons and the Ministry of Truth aka the BBC) is memory-holeing each successive administration.

So Johnson "let it rip" is treated as the PM of some long-forgotten, long-ago administration, rather than the same government just a couple years ago. Ditto the lettuce lady last year.
