Fixing an issue with a React component whose job it is to handle the cookie consent banner. It's 3rd party so I'm looking at the implementation source code.

It's like dozens - I'm not joking - dozens of modules in package after package, including storybooks and test suites and whatnot.

I implemented a cookie consent banner in my side project in about 10 lines of Python code using HTMX, not including the HTML snippet.

This industry has become a joke.

@danjac It's not only . The text I was proofreading the other day was about observability / metrics / alerting. The solution is overly convoluted and has redundant pieces. It uses the non-buggy parts of each piece to do a tiny fraction of the job that the tool would theoretically be able to do. And half the text is about workarounds for actually making the software do some of what it is supposed to. All of the software involved is bleeding edge stuff...

I have a Windows 10 partition on my computer to run my music software on. How long do I have before I get force-upgraded to 11? Just curious. It probably won't affect me that much except for more insidious privacy problems, I... hope?

When you want to blame developers for some poorly-running site:

Bear in mind we usually have our hands firmly tied. We have to use a stack we don't like, connect to services we know are unreliable, write code for an architecture designed by a committee of astronauts, refrain from fixing bugs and issues that are not in the backlog, track users because the PM wants a bonus, and work to a deadline set by sales rather than reality.

@danjac quietly doing the right thing and perhaps asking for forgiveness later is my main method for dealing with this. And a harsh but 100% true reality check at exit interviews.

Any downside to replacing my Sram XG-1150 10-42T with e*thirteen’s 9-46T TRS+? And then dropping my chainring to 38 to get a lower low gear (or lower for bikepacking).

It seems like it will work fine with my Rival shifters.

@idropyou @bryanhansel Yeah, +1 for checking the min/max for your derailleur.
And I have never used the cassette you mentioned, but 9t instead of 10t on the smallest will most probably wear out faster than the current one.

    Sometimes I'm a total geek. I'm trying to figure out how much power I'm going to need on a potential bikepacking trip.

    I've added a lot of electronics to my kit since my last bike tour. All I had on that tour was a phone that I kept off, a coin battery powered bike computer, and a couple of batteries for my camera.

    I'm going to carry one or two NB 10,000 battery packs and count on one or two electrical outlets at state park campgrounds.

    Anyone knowledgeable about mushrooms have any information on what this species is? We found it on our neighbor's boulevard grass. We live in a residential urban area in Minnesota.

    szakib,
    @szakib@freeradical.zone avatar

    @zalasur Looks kinda like chicken of the woods, but please do not take any "identification" at face value if it is only based on a picture. Smell, texture, taste, changes when cut/squeezed can be important factors to distinguish similar ones.

    The Harley Quinn cartoon television program may - MAY - be the finest television program on the television. This may be because of the relentless fusillade of swears - which is a thing that makes any tv show better - but it is probably a bit more than that, like writers, like the absolutely insanely talented Jess Dweck, doing WRITING that makes scripts good and characters arc-y and lovable, but there is also swears involved in that part.

    I was thinking to myself, “when will the effects of climate change get so bad that they provoke revolution” but then it occurred to me: they already did. Just in the wrong direction.

    Syrians fled a civil war driven by the worst drought in a thousand years and Europe responded with a wave of reactionary fascism.

    Central Americans fled rising temperatures that are killing agricultural workers and the U.S. responded with a wave of reactionary fascism.

    Russia just happens to be in a war for control of some of the world’s best farmland.

    Sudan is in the middle of a civil war and Niger just had its umpteenth coup.

    Reactionaries are already at war with us over climate change. It’s only going to get worse as the world gets hotter.

    One thing I don't do any more at work is try to push better approaches, architecture etc. Unless you are in an early-stage startup you will never have the leeway or clout to make it happen.

    Instead I'll try and make little changes and suggestions here and there. Hey, maybe I can document this build process? How about a <button> instead of a <div> here?

    @danjac @hengymrohebwlad I'm old and cynical too, but... You guys might want to read up on the concept of psychological safety. A good workplace has it and it enables this class of problems not to be swept under the rug to create ever-increasing pain.
    The least that should happen is convincing everybody to assume the "leave things in a slightly better state than you found them" attitude mentioned above. One step better is getting permission for a "refactoring task force" or something similar.

    szakib,
    @szakib@freeradical.zone avatar

    @hengymrohebwlad @danjac That's approximately my attitude too. There is always something else, almost always soemthing better when it's time to go. My tolerance for office BS is getting less and less over the years. Seen the same stupid stuff too many times.

    szakib,
    @szakib@freeradical.zone avatar

    @danjac @hengymrohebwlad I've been to places that are "good" in the present, but were not in the past, so there is legacy code and legacy attitudes, but there is a willingness to do something about it. Maybe my favourite kind of place. (Making existing things better is kinda my mission in life.)

    I had a similar one lately. A few days before the end of my trial period, the boss collected feedback about me and it included some negative things.
    Two bosses were supposed to decide whether I get to keep the job or not and get back to me in 2 days. I said something like "Look, if you do keep me, you will want me to have slept OK tonight and tomorrow, so please rearrange your schedules and talk today." They did that.

    It should go without saying, but things like pandemics, masks, and vaccines should not be politicized. These should not be “wedge” issues to be exploited by craven politicians but decisions guided by science, empathy, and care.

    The COVID pandemic hit blue states hard because we were unprepared and first thrived in cities with more international travel and public transportation. But since the rollout of the vaccines, COVID is killing substantially more Republicans than Democrats.

    szakib,
