takeheart,

Pretty much. I keep a sheet of aluminum ready to put on top in case the outside is getting too crisp while the inside still needs more time.

takeheart,

Ha! I instantly recognized this art style. it’s Richard Scarry, British children’s book author. I still have a hard copy of one of my favorites from childhood:

takeheart,

I mean you could alias the glob option as the default but I clearly see your point about standardized default behaviour.

takeheart,

Can recommend. It’s both fast and has reasonable syntax and defaults, for instance searching with it is case insensitive by default,

takeheart,

You can look up pollen load in weather forecasts to get an empiric answer and it’s useful if you plan to spend a lot of time outside during certain days. And yes it varies from year to year.

Unfortunately global climate change generally makes it worse as plants start to blossom earlier and longer with increased temperatures.

Nevertheless keep in mind that others things affect your reaction too namely your general health state, medication, nutrition, time spent outside/inside, stress, how often and when you open your windows, wash your hair or change clothes or whether you own a pet. Whether you dry your washed clothes outside, if you’re a smoker and whether you live rural or urban.

Mayhaps some factors have changed for you? During allergy season I try to adapt my behavior as much as possible.

takeheart,

Here’s a neat trick that works with some providers: you can include a + sign and an extra string of characters and it will still be delivered to the same address. Example:

user083+some-online-shop@provider.net will receive the mail for user083@provider.net. So you can register with a different email address everywhere yet it all goes to the same account. If your account gets leaked or breached you’ll know where it happened thanks to the extra information behind the +.

takeheart,

Yeah, the redacting is weird. How did you even receive this? I thought it came via email itself so you would know but it’s still redacted in case you’re using aliases. Or perhaps they assume people have only a single account with any provider and thus could infer.

takeheart,

You can narrow it down by length. Not perfect but it’s a start. Unless the *****s are always the same length like in some password fields. Hard to tell from the message.

takeheart,

The thing that bothers me most with the current pay wall situation is that I’m not against paying for journalism in general, in fact I favor it: Reward good work with good money.

The problem is the inflexible payment methods. I want to be able to pay some cents for a single article quickly and conveniently. But most online newspapers offer only a month+ long subscription. That’s asking way too much, I want really want just this single article. And all the other stuff that you’re also giving me access to I simply wouldn’t use.

I like to read up on specific topics from a variety of sources but the current economic models heavily punish my archetype of costumer. I simply can’t afford to open up hundreds of subscriptions over the course of a year.

Now often I simply fall into the X free articles per month category because I stray across so many different media outlets but that feels bad too because I actually want to pay for individual articles and help preserve journalism but there’s no means. Best I can do currently is rotate some subscriptions each month and free ride on the rest.

In the paper era you could at least grab an individual issue (not an individual article, series or section thougn) at a newsstand and weren’t locked in.

The web desperately needs infrastructure to effortlessly and quickly transfer small amounts of currency - change my mind. European Central Bank is working on a digital Euro which could lead to this but that’s many years down the road and also going to depend a lot on their implementation.

takeheart,

So what’s the difference?

My intuition is that directory is the older term and refers to something existing on the file system while folder can be that but also includes “virtual folders” that group together different files from across the file system like when photo manager shows you categories like ‘recently viewed’ or ‘taken in 2023’.

takeheart,

Aha, to me it’s an apt metaphors as files go into folders and it fits with the whole desktop analogy.

takeheart,

You bring up a pretty good point. Whenever I have a personal document that could go into multiple categories (eg a travel insurance certificate can go into travel, insurance, or finance folder) I place it in all 3 at once with hard links. What’s more is that if I intuitively first search for a document in place A but it’s actually in place B I simply place a link in A for the next time.

Before I learned a bit about file systems I didn’t even conceive of such a thing being possible; precisely because the folder metaphor had imprinted upon me the physical world constraint that things can only be in a single place at once.

takeheart,

I much like Quod Libet. It has a clean, functional interface to manage your local music collection. Also support for Plugins is nice.

You can create Boolean Logic filters like (played < 10 times AND genre = classical AND composer = Mozart) which I appreciate. And some of the included tools like being able to automatically create meta data tags from file names (for instance <artist> - <album> - <track>.mp3).

It’s the best replacement for Music Bee (Windows only) that I’ve come across.

takeheart,

Yeah the locker/towel thing would be a habit especially if you don’t actively think about it.

You may not have a strong daily routine but all humans have habits and it’s precisely because you don’t actively think about them a lot that it’s can be hard to become cognizant of them.

They also include behavioral preferences such as scratching your chin with your right hand when lost in thought 🤔, calling your girlfriend ‘honey’ frequently, consuming certain foods/beverages more than others, separating the trash, opening up social Media on your smart phone when bored, or taking your jacket with you when you go outside.

Those are not the same for everyone but everyone has them useless maybe some severe medical condition is present.

Recording & Editing Steam Deck Gameplay Videos With Kdenlive (lostpod.space)

Any program can be added to steam by putting the Steam Deck into Desktop Mode (hold power button and select Desktop Mode), finding the app in the start menu Right clicking and selecting “add to steam” from the menu. Remember the “game” added to steam will have its own separate controller profile, choose keyboard and...

takeheart,

Different question: what’s the benefit/difference to launching the game from desktop mode instead? increased performance?

takeheart,

Ok,the suspension is actually a big deal.I noticed that in desktop mode it usually closes my open files in GIMP and others when I suspend. Not that I wouldn’t save everything first anyway, but good to know.

takeheart,

Tacking on: as far as translation of ancient texts is concerned there is also a selection bias. It is far more likely that an important formal document endured the times than some every day scribble. Of course a political treaty is crafted, conserved and replicated more carefully than a note someone left for their neighbor. Both the skill of writing and the materials required were much rarer and access more prevalent among the upper classes. Finally important formal documents are more likely to be translated precisely because they are important. Imagine that in 2000 years from now you would be one of the few scholars capable of translating English. You would be much more to likely to study and translate the declaration of independence than some mundane Twitter post.

Fight Club

takeheart,

Blowing up buildings with people inside them is evil.

takeheart,

Fair point. Although I suspect you could still kill people that just happen to be walking by the buildings and such.

takeheart,

Let us hope that one day the US, or any democracy for that matter, will come together to implement ranked choice voting.

takeheart,

OK, listened to this without knowing what kind of game redout is and immediately thought: racing game. Good match.
