taking programming advice from people who use ruby should come with a warning

like "i use a language designed to make three line examples look good in a slide deck. this idea might not look as great without sugar."

or "this person took bdd seriously and belived running a eula though a regex to interpret tests was the height of engineering. beware of solutions in search of problems"

i have just seen someone in all earnestness say "avoid branching because it makes testing easier" and like i don't know where to begin with dismissing it

you should not be making your code harder to read in order to make it "easier to test", it will always backfire

advice that needs expertise to apply correctly is always useless: beginners do not benefit from it and experts dont need pithy dogma to follow

@whitequark i think it depends on what structures you're modifying with assembly

it might be fairer to call it the byte/word oriented version of "stringly typed programming", rather than plain untyped

    turned down a ticket to an invite only conference

    the big reason? i am an anxious wreck, spending a weekend wondering if i'm cool enough to be allowed back is the opposite of a good time

    the other reason? it skews very old. i don't really want to spend a weekend around retired californian libertarians, even if some of them worked on cool software back in 1993

    i also turned down a ticket for a pendulum gig but i don't know any of their songs beyond "they did a sub par cover of voodoo people that people eight years younger than me really like for reasons i do not understand"

    anyway, i think if i was in my 20s or 30s, the idea of hobnobbing around industry has-beens at an invite only event might be more fun

    but here i am in my 40s and i've already spent enough of my career listening to programmers ten-twenty years older than me

    i'd link to the wiki page for the "cool invite only conference" but it's basically "hey, someone ran a conference once in 1984 and a bunch of people turned up. absolutely nothing of note has happened in the last thirty years"
