It's an interesting grift in a way: VC-subsidized startups changed an incumbent industry enough that its existing companies began to think that these new ideas were good business. But they never were, and it ate them from the inside. https://www.latimes.com/business/technology/story/2023-07-21/column-hollywood-sag-aftra-strike-strike-silicon-valleys-magical-thinking?utm_source=werd.io&utm_campaign=mastodon&utm_channel=mastodon

@ben i tend to buy the union's story more—with the rise of streaming, big places have cut residuals

players like netflix are paying people pennies

and yeah, the studios will just say shit like "we will use ai", but they don't have to actually believe it

it only serves as a threat of forcing wages down

tef,
@tef@mastodon.social avatar

@ben i am 100% sure you can find one movie exec who has absolutely snorted enough coke to be on the AI hype train

but well, the studios just don't want to pay—to the point where "please pay us on time" got the answer "no, and we never will"

Today I finally learned what people mean by the “N+1 problem” and now I’m slightly annoyed. I’ve know about this issue for years, but I never knew the term referred to that — and most explanations I heard weren’t clear enough for me to make the connection.

I think if folks had called it “1+N” instead I probably would have made the connection sooner 😅 — I legit thought it was some sort of undecidebility thing.

tef,
@tef@mastodon.social avatar

@yosh i thought the n+1 problem was "when you paginate through an api, in a particular style, you have to do n+1 requests as you only know it's ended when you get an empty result"

been on a huge fucking refactoring blitz at work

we've gone from: four projects in three repos on two docker images

to: one project, in one repo, making one docker image.

we've even got tests now. i am so, so close to making this thing run locally, outside of k8s

nerd question: are there any off the shelf fancy distributed things that actually use chain replication

or does everyone just badly reimplement paxos and/or start implementing raft and reinventing view stamped replication

tef,
@tef@mastodon.social avatar

@janl @sushee

chain replication is the idea that instead of "all replicas replicate from primary" (raft/vsr/zab)

you daisychain them, "primary copies to secondary replica, secondary copies to tertiary"

and writes are considered committed when you reach the tail

the trick is that you can serve all reads from the tail (last replica) and all writes from head (primary)

tef,
@tef@mastodon.social avatar

@janl @sushee oh and yep, CRAQ

that's where replicas further up the chain poke the tail to work out if items have been committed yet

and so the rest of the chain can also serve reads

today is probably the only day you'll see a screenshot of meta's threads on other social networks

by the end of the week, threads will be full of screenshots from social networks where people talk to each other, rather than engage with brands, and you'll never think about it again

@tef@mastodon.social avatar

facebook's threads, a competitor to iFunny, 9gag, ebaumsworld, and imgur, launched today

it's basically everything you hate about instagram with nothing you like, assuming there's anything left of insta to actually like

there's one firehose "for you" page which, judging by instagram's efforts, will soon have eighteen copies of the same tiktok video on every page

an absolute dog shit app for terminal cases of linked in brain

Sometimes people ask: “Why can’t we just replace async/.await with green threads?”

I’m trying to find a good way to answer it. But roughly I think that kind of like how it doesn’t make much sense to try and replace callbacks with threads, it doesn’t make sense to try and replace Rust futures with green threads. They’re different things with optimized for different tasks with different performance profiles.

tef,
@tef@mastodon.social avatar

@yosh the answer is "it's harder to embed a language with green threads, but it's relatively easy to embed one with async/await"

i have a four step plan for dealing with spam on twitter

  1. fire all the support team
  2. turn off any redundant capacity
  3. turn off the api for almost everyone to force spammers to screen scrape
  4. turn off the website because of screen scrapers

Nobody is this bad at what they do. Twitter has to be a tax write-off. Has to be.

tef,
@tef@mastodon.social avatar

@ben on the contrary, this is genuinely pretty normal

the thing is, usually tech companies are run into the ground before they're successful, rather than after
