Sometimes struggling for weeks over analyses and data issues is worth it. Now, doing a write-up for a report has been very fast and rewarding as there are very few stones left unturned.

Furthermore, it's been my first proper inundation with mass survey data processing, and I know big data gets a bad rep, but it isn't much prettier on this side of the fence either. Yeesh.

Perfect data exists only in textbooks and course exercises.

I don’t care if you pirate, but I’m not going to do it.

Steam, GOG.com, itch.io, and Epic Game Store is too convenient for me. It keep my catalogue stored in the cloud. I can store my screenshots. And it’s faster to buy and download than it is to hunt for a torrent.

I’m also 42-years-old, with a family, and I don’t want to deal with potential legal hassles.

Besides, I want more games so I pay developers to encourage them to make more of them.

@atomicpoet Hear hear! However, I do miss physical media and knowing that I own something for good. Case in point, I would love to play through the original Unreal once again, but one cannot get it anywhere. It used to be on Steam, but not anymore, it's not on Epic store either (which is weird, it is their IP after all). I sold my CD of it way back in the day at a flea market, oh the regrets. Having everything in the cloud, while it is the norm, makes me slightly nervous in this regard.

So Luleå, Sweden will get a cool new fossil-free steel plant instead of Raahe, Finland from SSAB. A bummer, but as many news outlets have pointed out not surprising. First, the Swedish government who owns SSAB will have more say in Luleå. Second, the plant in Raahe is decidedly more modern so revamping it makes less sense. Third, the current Finnish government tries its best to hinder projects and then cries foul when big investments for such transitions go elsewhere.

Delivering a guest lecture on today for a course.

It is introductory, and very very basic, but still I am a bit nervous as it is not my field, I've just used bits and bobs from it here and there. Hopefully there are no CS students rolling their eyes 😅

waeiski,
@waeiski@vis.social avatar

@kristinHenry Oh, I am flattered ☺️

Having learned some ML for a few articles, I can say a lot of preconceptions fell away, and I learnt to see ML/DL as a collection of techniques instead of "magic".

In my field, there's a saying "spatial is special", and many models still account for spatial and geographical aspects rather poorly or not at all. As if, things do not happen somewhere, but in a vacuum free of the geographical context. Then we get a "giraffe" in Lapland instead of a "reindeer".

I keep tabs on new from several journals with feeds in . This works really well for most of the publishers, except one, Springer.

Springer hides their RSS links so deep into their website, that apparently they do not want people to read their articles.

I will miss potentially relevant research because of this, and before anyone asks, no, I will not sign up to any more email notification lists.

It is a bummer that the only way to get on is through AUR. I have nothing but bad experiences of AUR in Manjaro, even if something works initially, it will break eventually.

I would love to have it in the Manjaro repos or as a . It is officially available for on Ubuntu/Debian, Fedora and OpenSuse, so it ought to be possible.

On a related note, how difficult is it to turn a .deb file into a flatpak?

Whenever I give my a bath, I wonder the same thing.

She doesn't like bathing, not at all. She does not growl, bark, or cry. She doesn't even show her teeth. She just goes very stiff, emotes this is not her idea of a good time, and wants to escape.

BUT when it is all said and done, and she is dry, she gets the zoomies and wants to be petted every which way. Tail wagging like crazy. As happy as can be.

So I wonder if she is happy because she is clean or because the shower is over 🤔

We shared our @digigeolab Lab Handbook this week. We have been working on our everyday research group practices for years.

We decided to make them public, and as @tuuli said "it is not rocket science, but we thought it might be useful for other research groups and upcoming PIs"

Please have a look: https://blogs.helsinki.fi/digital-geography/2024/02/18/sharing-our-lab-handbook/

This is highly connected to my work on and . Less labelling of minority languages into "unknown" category! Improved understanding of linguistic ! It also makes the case for improving information on languages in national registries!

A wild map made in appeared from an envelope today. I'm happy to see used in research in the private sector as well.

As a I have to judge the map. It is the law.

The map is surprisingly good for a BW map. I like the slight off-white colour of the water bodies. The textual elements are clearly legible. BUT. The scale bar and north arrow are way too large, and numbers would've sufficed to indicate the various areas. Now some texts make it hard to identify locations.

Bah! If you're doing an online or a , and you are asking in which region/city/village the respondent is living in currently. Do not make it an open field. If you do, you are asking for trouble down the line.

Instead, have a drop-down menu with the options. It does not matter how many options there would be. Just do it, make it searchable or something. After this, you can have an open field where the respondent can write clarifications.

So it's the #Finnish presidential election night.

Going to finish tomorrow's #GIS lecture slides, contribute to a shared opinion piece, peep the #YLE coverage on the elections, eat some crackers and cheese, and self-medicate with some #CaolIla.

Looks like we're heading for a run-off with Stubb (centre-right Kokoomus) and Haavisto (greens Vihreät) in the next 2 weeks. As expected.

Whenever our @digigeolab has had to involve university lawyers into the process of acquiring , the whole project starts to bog down. In some cases, for over 6 years.. ugghh.

However, sometimes the universe provides.

A contract on a massive dataset has just got signed in record time: two months! This is with the presence of lawyers, corporate interests, and university bureaucracy. I am stunned, but happy!

Ajanhallintametodini (Rollen produktiivisuusmalli™) on kuin yhdistelmä David Allenin GTD:tä, säntillistä aikatauluttamista Leo Straniuksen tyyliin ja antisäätämistä Anna Perhon tyyliin (mainiot kirjat heillä btw).

As a geographer and a featherweight linguist, this is a cool dataset. It's used for research and teaching at the University of Eastern Finland, but whether it's is not clear. Also, the use of postal code areas is understandable but not the best.
