I don’t care if you pirate, but I’m not going to do it.

Steam, GOG.com, itch.io, and Epic Game Store is too convenient for me. It keep my catalogue stored in the cloud. I can store my screenshots. And it’s faster to buy and download than it is to hunt for a torrent.

I’m also 42-years-old, with a family, and I don’t want to deal with potential legal hassles.

Besides, I want more games so I pay developers to encourage them to make more of them.

@atomicpoet Hear hear! However, I do miss physical media and knowing that I own something for good. Case in point, I would love to play through the original Unreal once again, but one cannot get it anywhere. It used to be on Steam, but not anymore, it's not on Epic store either (which is weird, it is their IP after all). I sold my CD of it way back in the day at a flea market, oh the regrets. Having everything in the cloud, while it is the norm, makes me slightly nervous in this regard.

@waeiski If you use a platform like GOG.com, you can own your digital copy of a game forever because it’s DRM-free. You can even put it on disc and make your own box art:

Also, I bought Unreal on Steam. It might not be available to buy there anymore, but I can still play it. I actually play it all the time on my Steam Deck.

@atomicpoet

Did you install some sort of patch to get it to use 1080p resolution and a modern GPU?

@argv_minus_one @waeiski No need for a patch. It works fine on modern resolutions.

Here’s the game running on my Steam Deck (which uses Linux) at 800p. And yes, I’m using a 4:3 aspect ratio.

@atomicpoet Yeah, I know, but it's not on GOG either..

@waeiski I have no idea why Epic de-listed Unreal. What can I say? Abandonware sucks.

@atomicpoet There's also potential security issues with software piracy, as you never really know for sure if a cracked game is just the game or if it includes malware.
