“A Young Turk spared hackerdom from respectability” - The Wall Street Journal

I'm a hacker living in California. I take photos of arthropods, do various computer projects, and do lots of repairs on things around my house. I also like to bike and trail run :)

20+ years of open source, systems administration, software engineering, distributed systems, and infosec. You may have used software I've built -- Logstash, fpm, grok, pleaserun, xdotool.

If a user has a bad time, it’s a bug.

Probably time for a new bandsaw blade as it gets bogged down ripping softwoods like redwood at anything more than a snails pace.

whack,
@whack@hachyderm.io avatar

@mckern unknown age. Maybe 4 years but I don’t use the bandsaw often. This saw I got used and always seemed to bog down so maybe it’s how I use it or something else. I wouldn’t think a 1.5HP motor would bog down this much

@mckern damnit gonna nerd snipe myself thinking about this. Blade feels sharp so down the rabbit hole we go

So, do I only get Microsoft Recall if I upgrade to Windows 11, or will I soon be like Arnold Schwarzenegger in "Total Recall", pulling a tracking device out of my head in a most uncomfortable manner?

Often, our well and its relevant infrastructure have created problems that yield “oops, we have no water.”

And now, it has found a new idea. “Oops, we have too much water”

(This is not a request for help.)

A 1500 gallon well tank spills water out of its top lid as it overflows. I gesture at it and say “this is a well tank overflowing. It’s not supposed to do that”

The other well has a bad starter capacitor I think. Reads ~90uF where the label says 105-126uF

whack,
@whack@hachyderm.io avatar

First well got its float switch adjusted today. Fingers crossed it doesn't act up gain and overflow the tanks.

Second well with its capacitor failed as well as the magic smoke being let out of the pump protection circuit. That was a spicy repair cost.

y'all out there thinking "You have a well? You don't pay for water! That's amazing!" it ain't free in money or stress 🤣

Long bike route planning (especially dirt trails) is made more difficult when "Where can I get water?" requires researching park maps, satellite views, street views, park brochures, yelp reviews, etc ... for each park along the way. It's quite tedious.

@whack@hachyderm.io avatar

@enobacon I'll have to learn more how to use OSM. It shows potable water at this part, but the icons are tiny and hard to read, so scrolling around is mostly guessing. Wonder if I could search for just amenity=drinking_water in a given map area or something?

@recursive I assumed it was some artifact caused by adhesive between glass layers but I dunno.. it looks neat!

@xtaran asks about terms discussed enough BikeNites ago for me to forget somewhat 😅

Q5. I remember that someone said you should not use the word "cycling" but "riding" instead. Or was it the other way round? And I also forgot why. I vaguely remember it was something political. And what about "biking"?

(Generally, how do you prefer to refer to the act of riding a cycle, and someone who rides one? And why? Do some of the terms have confusing or undesirable meanings?)

@enobacon @ascentale @xtaran hold up! Biscuits?! How do I acquire these biscuits?!

All my Ubiquiti APs are stuck in “adopting” and I can’t wait to have nuke everything, factory reset by hand, and start from scratch 🫠

(This is not a call for help, I already made mistakes by operating a wifi network at home)

Months of preparation, and it is done. 75mi/118km mostly mtb-trail ride around Folsom Lake. Could not have done this without the support of my partner. ❤️

My body is exhausted, but the stoke is high.

Visiting family and find that the internet goes down every 6 hours, and upon inquiry, learn that they have a scheduled timer on the modem reboot it on exactly this schedule… because otherwise the modem goes weird and stops working.

This is the future of technology 😍

Gonna need Disney+ to stop shipping mandatory app updates every day… or need Apple to allow apps to update without needing my attention so often.

Don’t worry, industry is on top of this. Instead of funding critical software as a risk mitigation, your projects will get a bad score and some finger-wagging from OpenSSF. Mischief managed! 😍

@Foxboron I was mocking, but serious-ish.

Honestly, these industry-pushed “security” labels are (I hope) a good way to fund open source. If folks want to burden a project by adding conditions to it, then they can pay the maintainers for this.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the outcome with things like OpenSSF.

Finally finished a Destiny 2 mission that took me and @jubei almost 3 hours in one sitting (after many prior failures)… and the reward is a reveal that this mission was part 1 of a 7-part quest. (The Grasp of Avarice)

@nogweii @jubei we’d made several prior efforts on the dungeon and finally beat the final boss tonight. Where are the designers who made this dungeon and why aren’t they doing more things?! The dungeon was awesome
