I love . I love it for the music, for the show, for snarking with friends, and most importantly because I've always thought it a force for good in the world: the one place that unapologetically queer expression could get shown in the most oppressively anti-queer countries in Europe.

So of course I'm sad that the EBU is doing everything they can do to go out of their way to show they do not want to be that force for good this year.

Oh, and the best songs this year are from queer artists who've questioned why Israel should be there. Absolutely no coincidence there. ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญ

Joost Klein asks "why not" when told Israel could refuse to answer a question about endangering other artists: https://m.independent.ie/videos/joost-klein-asks-why-not-when-israel-was-told-they-could-refuse-to-answer-when-asked-on-endangerment-of-other-entries/a315275467.html

It is... unfortunate that the PSF sent out an email to all voting members that mentions having to sign up for a site, and then the email address mentioned to link your status returns with a delivery failure.

chrisjrn,
@chrisjrn@social.coop avatar

@webology
This is entirely to ensure that quorum is met: we need to record votes from half of everyone we issue ballots to in order for the vote to be valid, the affirmation process is less than ideal, but it's equitable.
@andrew

chrisjrn,
@chrisjrn@social.coop avatar

@webology
I appreciate the feedback. One big change this year is that we've changed election administration from one person acting in a volunteer capacity (who happened to also be on staff) to it being a formal staff role. I think staff have done a good job reacting to feedback so far, and my hope is that we can improve on our outreach efforts over last year. 1/

chrisjrn,
@chrisjrn@social.coop avatar

@webology
There's also now a permanent board committee to oversee the election, who will review the election after it's been held, and they'll work with staff to improve processes for next year. I personally hope we'll review the membership classes so there's less confusion there too, but that's up to the membership.

A lot has changed behind the scenes this year, but it's going to take a few go-arounds to come good. In the meantime, well-intentioned feedback is very much appreciated.

I understand that the email address mentioned in the affirmation email now goes to the right place. If you want to send it out again, it should go to the right place. If not, please let me know so we can try again.

In retrospect my time at CloudBees was very informative.

I learned a lot about how much of a pain in the ass it is to sell developers tools which will make their lives better.

A very useful lesson for anybody in Infrastructure or Platform engineering teams ๐Ÿ™ƒ

I have a few "blind spots" in my mental architecture. Things I can't remember no matter how much I try. The strangest of these is Coldplay.

I know that there is a band called Coldplay, but nothing more. Don't know who's in it, where they're from, or any songs of theirs. You can play a Coldplay song, even one I've heard before, and I won't know who it is.

I was doing a trivia thing this morning, and the clue was "Band who recorded 'Clocks,' starts with a C." And I had nothing.

I order some Products from the United States.

The cost is $88 CAD.

There's a fixed international shipping cost of $48 CAD. Frustrating, but that is what the shipper has, so okay.

A couple days later, I get an email from UPS asking to pay the import duty fee. The import fee is $51 CAD.

That is more than half the cost of the product itself. I'm overall paying more for shipping+import fees than for the product.

When I moved here I assumed I could buy stuff from USA cheap because of NAFTA :(

chrisjrn,
@chrisjrn@social.coop avatar

@mcc
From this, and various chats with friends, I have concluded that the only reasonable way to buy cheap things from the US when in Canada is to live in Vancouver and purchase a mailbox at Point Roberts. I presume this isn't helpful info to you.

chrisjrn,
@chrisjrn@social.coop avatar

@mcc
I don't think there's another border that's quite as hilariously convenient as Point Roberts (a town whose only industries are witness protection, buses to Point Roberts, and US mailboxes for Canadians). There's probably a few between Quรฉbec and Vermont, but those lakes in Ontario are a real shit.

LAX mystery airline challenge 2024: another airline has changed your flight; no we won't tell you which airline you've been changed to, you'll have to figure that detail out yourself. HAVE FUN!
