Someone outside is smoking weed again. Like I get it, it's awesome that it's legal here, but that doesn't mean you have to be rude about it. Some of us have allergies, after all.

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@xgranade how many people are even aware that weed allergies are a thing...

Since it seems like you might know @whitequark, why are those "flipper" frequency hacking devices always sold out and so expensive?

It's the kind of thing I'd get to play around with-- but the steep prices and lack of information have put me off.

What the heck is going on with those things?

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird you're paying an "apple premium"; i.e. paying more for a cute thing manufactured to very high standards

they are not doing anything particularly advanced technically

(i have one. i love it, would spend that much again. it is not doing anything super special)

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@0x56 @futurebird (this is also a part of the "apple premium" you, or at least i, am paying for! but yes.)

earlier today i have flexed on the CEO of the company i work at by picking into his garage and then picking the lock back closed because he had a tool we needed in the garage and lost the keys, which made me realize that now that i'm in a country where lockpicks are legal, i need a set

can someone recommend me a good set? I don't need 17 pieces, I want like a 7 piece set (maybe a pair of tensioners?) but I want one that's actually well made, not the aliexpress specials

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

it was really funny, this was the second lock i ever picked, the first time i used factory made picks instead of pick & tensioner i made myself, and i completely failed at raking it, so after struggling with that for a while i just SPP'd it and got it at first try

(... and then he couldn't pick it back so i picked it back on my second try; wasn't a fluke I guess ^^;)

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@thejpster yea that's actually where I got most of my picking knowledge and for lack of better word, vibe?

it's a lot of the reason why I was able to pick that lock that easily and quickly

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

i spent $85 (first and probably last, i don't foresee needing more tools any time soon) at covertinstruments dot com, his tools are good and they're actually shockingly reasonably priced

whitequark,

you're all just favoriting it because you watch LPL's videos aren't you

@dmbaturin lockpickinglawyer

famous youtuber who's real good at lockpicking, though lately he basically picked so many locks he's out of content and switched to promoting his shop, which i've bought from

whitequark,

@russss thank you this is useful information

(i wasn't typically going to for purely personal reasons, but yeah.)

amazing corner of aliexpress

whitequark, (edited )
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

i love how the seller of a device whose sole design purpose is retail theft is responding to a glowing positive review with "this is not for all tags, it is for most tags"

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

do you think the seller has integrity (for selling only the best product to criminals) or lacks integrity (for selling only the best product to criminals)

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird @Nazani ^ this. some shops on aliexpress are resellers too but there are so many where you are actually buying the thing they made themselves.

also, not all of it is "cheaply made"--there are specialist products on aliexpress that cost thousands or tens of thousands of pounds, and are worth that.

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@anymouse_404 no i don't think so, they're pretty consistent in pointing this out throughout reviews & product presentation.

a few years ago i've avoided mastodon/fediverse because i didn't like the interactions i had here, and stayed on twitter because i thought the interactions there were fulfilling

well... these days i get the same kind of fufilling interaction on here, and on twitter i get ~nothing

NixOS users (I know like a ton of you follow me): can you critique my NixOS config here? https://github.com/whitequark/catircservices.org

(note: I do not deploy from NixOS. I do not plan to deploy from NixOS. so the weirdness related to that is intentional, e.g. I know about agenix but it seems to only work if you deploy from NixOS so whateves)

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@leo yep that I'm aware of; only people who will have ssh access (as root; this thing has no non-root user logins) are those who have secret access, so it's no big deal

whitequark, to random
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

as someone who dislikes NixOS for weird ideological reasons I won't go into (it's related to ABI-stable libraries), I have to say that I've been using NixOS for the last few weeks and it has caused essentially no issues despite me:

  • using it in anger (incl. literally)
  • only somewhat paying attention to the docs
  • having no prior experience with NixOS
  • or with the domain specific language it uses

this is really impressive! props to all the people who make it happen
