You remind me of that MacKinnon cartoon, from years ago. Lemme see if I can find it. Ah here:

Sadly again/still relevant, hm?

Well, there’s a shocker. But not to worry! He’ll surely not get away with the next crime he commits.

Wtf are you talking about? Nowhere does OP say he’s angry or even really bothered by it at all. He just thinks “oh ewww, that looks disgusting” and then goes about his day. What’s more disturbing is that so many people apparently seem to think that being this fat is actually something we should just accept or even celebrate.

I feel like society should have a role in making sure people don’t ever get this fat. And not because it’s “eww” or ugly, but because it’s fucking unhealthy. Whenever I see a person like this, I feel pity. You don’t get this fat in a few months. This means years and years of bad habits, lack of access to healthy foods, maybe a terrible childhood with parents who didn’t give a shit, no assistance from the people around you who just stand by and watch it happen (or even enable it), very likely a highly fucked up self image and other issues. This is simply not healthy. It’s terrible.

And this weird thing is happening where people can’t even say these things anymore without being attacked by people like you. I think you actually believe that OP’s opinion is the outlandish one. And that just makes me sad.

wide_eyed_stupid,
@wide_eyed_stupid@lemmy.world avatar

This is what you take away from my comment? Nobody was attacking anyone until you started berating OP for having thoughts. Do you honestly think I’m walking around calling fat people names all the time? Or that OP does that? Of course not. What we’re thinking inside our own heads does not constitute an attack.

It’s hilarious that you think you’re on some moral high ground, implying that you never have any negative thoughts about anyone. Go stand on a lego, please.

wide_eyed_stupid,
@wide_eyed_stupid@lemmy.world avatar

This is because we can be of two minds about these things. You can have a personal response to heinous acts, but still think the government ought to be better.

If some guy murders the murderer of their kid, I can absolutely 100% understand why, and I could even admit that I might do the same in their position. But I still think that as a society we should not lower ourselves to this standard and I will always be against the death penalty (especially because the system will never be perfect and I will never think it’s worth killing even one innocent person by accident).

It’s why vigilante justice is so easily understood, but it’s still something we, as a society, shouldn’t accept.

Emotional reactions can cloud our minds to these things. But I absolutely agree with you. This is horrendous and barbarous. I can still somewhat understand the “he deserves it for what he did”-response, but I’m absolutely against this on a deeper level.

wide_eyed_stupid,
@wide_eyed_stupid@lemmy.world avatar

Exactly right! I think we’re actually agreed on this.

I just meant that OP used to say they ought to do it, which was his ‘emotional’ response to it, which is easier when it’s in abstract. But in reality he doesn’t like it at all when his government actually does it.

I’d never heard about that reddit story, but I think it’s very apt, lol.

wide_eyed_stupid,
@wide_eyed_stupid@lemmy.world avatar

Except nobody was physically forced down and vaccinated against their will. You can still choose not to be vaccinated, but choices have consequences. I’m not saying the government should arrest people for not being vaccinated, but people, institutions, companies and hospitals should definitely have the choice to not want to let those people inside.

wide_eyed_stupid,
@wide_eyed_stupid@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve never known anyone who wanted to physically force people to get vaccinated. I did know many people, myself included, who absolutely wanted mandates. Don’t want to get vaccinated? Sure, that’s your choice. But other people get to choose not to be around you, and this includes your employer or any store owner or transport company, etc.

wide_eyed_stupid,
@wide_eyed_stupid@lemmy.world avatar

Please stop, you’re so transparent. Vaccine mandates already existed in places, which has never meant that people are physically forced to get vaccinated. Like in schools, or when you want to work in a hospital. There are mandates. Don’t want to get vaccinated? Then you don’t get to work there. You’ll never be physically forced to vaccinate.

When my employer wanted everyone to get vaccinated, that was also called a mandate. People could still not get vaccinated, it’s their choice, but then they weren’t allowed in the building. No government violence required.

en.wikipedia.org/…/COVID-19_vaccination_mandates_…

There, plenty of mandates that have nothing whatsoever to do with physically being forced to get vaccinated. Just that when you choose not to, there are consequences. Actions have consequences, who knew?

If you still insist on pretending not to understand this, think of it this way: If you choose to not shower and never wear clean clothes (this is the choice you make), nobody will physically force you into a shower. But when you’re walking around smelling like weeks old sweat and garbage, your employer will definitely not let you come back to work (and this would be the consequence). Same goes for walking around like a virus dispenser.

wide_eyed_stupid,
@wide_eyed_stupid@lemmy.world avatar

I never said these people don’t exist at all. I said I’ve never met one. So I guess I’m saying they’re definitely a tiny minority.

And again: employer mandates still mean it’s optional. Absolutely optional. It’s optional because it’s not forced.

You know what baffles me the most about this, though? That you’re so hell bent on defending another random poster, who still hasn’t even taken the time to clarify his own post or even respond to me. How can you be so sure that’s what he meant?

wide_eyed_stupid,
@wide_eyed_stupid@lemmy.world avatar

Don’t worry, I’m tired of these discussions too. I’ve had them too many times over the past years. We obviously use different definitions of the word ‘optional’ and that’s fine. Let’s just leave it at that.

wide_eyed_stupid,
@wide_eyed_stupid@lemmy.world avatar

Nobody is coercing you to do anything when your employer doesn’t want people spreading disease in their company. Nobody is coercing anyone if e.g. hospitals refuse to hire someone who hasn’t had certain vaccinations. It has nothing to do with coercion. It has to do with the fact that actions and choices have consequences. You don’t get to willingly disregard (the safety of) everyone else and expect to be welcome everywhere.

If I choose not to shower, and stink to high heaven, some employers won’t hire me. If I choose not to wear shoes, or walk around in my underwear, I will be denied access to many places. Does this mean I am being coerced to shower and wear clothes?

Actions have consequences. It’s just that simple. You can always choose to not do x, but when it’s a requirement for y, you won’t get to do y unless you do x. And speaking of rights, what about everyone else’s rights to not have to sit/work/eat/wait next to Typhoid Mary? Or is it really your opinion that whatever someone does, their right to do whatever is more important than the rest of society? Do you think businesses should be forced to allow anyone inside no matter what? Employers are not allowed to set requirements for their employees?

wide_eyed_stupid,
@wide_eyed_stupid@lemmy.world avatar

No, it’s also choosing not to let them into your building.

wide_eyed_stupid,
@wide_eyed_stupid@lemmy.world avatar

It’s the exact same point. You disingenuously calling it “government coercion” doesn’t change anything.

But thank you for pointing out you don’t actually care. Means I don’t have to waste more time on this. I wish you a pleasant day.

wide_eyed_stupid,
@wide_eyed_stupid@lemmy.world avatar

The strangest thing… I have to agree. But what’s weird to me is that I can see all the issues with the game and don’t even necessarily disagree when people list all their gripes with it. The world feels empty, sure. The inventory clutter/management sucks. True. The quests aren’t even that good and a lot of the map is filled with the same police scanner shit. And yes, The Witcher had way better quests and practically no filler bullshit, and I had wished that CP2077 was the same…

All true. It’s simply that it… doesn’t seem to affect my enjoyment of the game at all. I love it.

It is also the only game I’ve ever played where I actually enjoy driving. I hate racing/car games and pretty much any other game that has driving… I will always prefer walking to driving. I don’t even drive IRL. But in CP2077… damn, I love the driving. Fast travel might as well not exist! I purposefully pick quests that are on the other side of the map, just so I can drive there. It’s so damn relaxing, cruising around, radio on, Night City is so beautifully built.

Schrödinger’s creep.

You put this in better words than I would have. Great post!

I mostly read series, and my favorite is Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson. The Silo series by Hugh Howey a close second.

I’m not really someone who reads many standalone books, because I love getting lost in epic/long stories (for this same reason I barely ever watch movies and stick with series in stead), and I hate how by the time I’m really getting into a book, suddenly it’s over… But hmm, for a standalone book I’d have to go with The Book Thief by Zusak (which btw, never seen the movie, maybe I should sometimes).

Agreed 1000%. That game is phenomenal. It has made me laugh so hard I ended up crying, well and sometimes I was just crying. An emotional roller coaster, superb writing.

My husband was playing it and I thought the game looked terrible, but he kept saying I really should play it, and I can’t put into words how fucking happy I am that I chose to try it. Can’t believe I almost missed out on it. Truly a masterpiece.

If only for the soundtrack, it’s worth playing once, at least. It’s so haunting and beautiful. The first time I played DOS1, I knew I would love it the moment I heard the music at startup. RIP Kirill, his music was so beautiful. Also nice they put his music on the piano in a certain evil dude’s house in DOS2!

Maybe I should replay it again. Just like OP I’m having a bit of a BG3 withdrawal issue.

wide_eyed_stupid,
@wide_eyed_stupid@lemmy.world avatar

It’s… without a doubt one of the best games I’ve ever played. Just hope you won’t buy it, publishers don’t deserve it.

Fuck man, I’ve been reading this exchange and you sound a bit unhinged. Some random Jewish person living half a world away has no influence whatsoever on the actions of Israel. Do note that the person you’re arguing with has already spoken out against Israel’s actions in this very thread! But there’s nothing more they can do about it. They’re just a rando online, nobody in any position in power is going to give a fuck about what they say. Or what you say. Or what I say, for that matter. Putting all this shit on their shoulders (or anyone else not in Israel - or in a position of power elsewhere) is deranged.

The only people who can change anything about it are Israelis themselves, their government or foreign governments (maybe large corporations? But why would they as long as they make money, right?) by putting pressure on Israel. Nobody else. Certainly not some poor schmuck you decided to berate on Lemmy. Get over yourself.

wide_eyed_stupid,

Why does it matter the guy is Polish? Like, why even mention that? I never understood why people do this. What’s wrong with saying “Our repair guy sent […] ?”

wide_eyed_stupid,
@wide_eyed_stupid@lemmy.world avatar

It did, though at the moment I seem to be the only one spamming. :D
