wjs018,

The rare two page chapter. Mary-san and pudding can only exist together very temporarily in close proximity.

wjs018,

Some interesting results this week with Konosuba taking the top spot after a wild episode which was my favorite of the season so far. Also shaking things up is Demon Slayer making the top 10 with the premiere episode. Additionally, after a week off, Loser Ranger made its way back to the top 10. The final one I want to call out is that my favorite romance anime of the season, Level 2 Cheat Powers, cracked the top 10 this week.

wjs018,

I am late to the party on this episode, but it was a fun one. I think my two favorite bits were both Laios-focused. First there was Laios literally scaring away a pack of wolves through his dog impression. Then there was Laios being a little lot too interested in the anatomy of Izutsumi.

The inclusion of Izutsumi into the OP and ED was nice and is a good indication that she will remain a core part of the group going forward. I do think that, even if she doesn’t care about the others at all, her actions were a bit reckless this episode. I mean, even if she hated the others, she has to recognize that, this deep in the dungeon, sticking with other (kinda?) capable adventurers raises her chances of survival as compared to wandering around on her own. I mean, even look to the ice golem fight during this episode as an example.

The sheep plant monster is weird…I kinda think I would have stayed away from that one. I trust you Senshi, but I don’t know about that. Give me a candied Mandrake any day of the week over a plant that grows fully formed sheep that taste like crab. That just has God’s mistake written all over it.

Wow, TIL! I hadn’t heard of this one before. It reminds me of the Headless Men myths of antiquity. Thanks for the info!

wjs018,

Yeah, I really missed the brevity of the humor after the hard turn to drama when Helck talked about his past. I think that the show needed an equivalent to Delicious in Dungeon’s episode 18 occasionally; something that allows the humor to come back into the story. I think that is part of what makes Piwi my favorite character is that there is no way to take Piwi seriously, and they are therefore able to keep just a little bit of silliness.

wjs018,

Having some story about delinquents picking fights feels like a return to this series’ roots. Now I want to see best girl Itachi throw down. Also curious to see stuco prez’s contribution to a confrontation.

wjs018,

This is fantastic.

wjs018,

This series is currently airing weekly on Netflix. Episode 20 of 24 just released today. If you decide to watch, you can find the full list of past episode discussion threads here. I am sure @MentalEdge will be posting the episode 20 thread later today.

wjs018,

I was wondering about traffic and the regional breakdown. I had been guessing it was mostly EU/NA based on the traffic I got to clips I post to the anime community using my own domain. Cloudflare just lists the top 5 countries:

https://ani.social/pictrs/image/1622eb57-eeb1-43a1-8140-e3ceaf654dac.webp

However, I wasn’t sure if that might be influenced by the time of day I am posting them since I am on the East coast of the US. Also included in that image is how much bandwidth the cloudflare cache has saved me in the past month. Posting clips as webms means that cloudflare will cache them automatically and save me >90% of the bandwidth on my VPS (something I didn’t know to start with, but am grateful for).

wjs018,

I have only ever used hosting providers in the US before, so I wasn’t aware of the documentation requirements for many of the EU providers. Did you have to migrate the object storage as well or was that fine to just stick to where it is as long as the pict-rs configuration and urls all point to the right place?

I have never personally done a big migration like this for any of the services I run as I have usually just done small scale stuff that only I or some friends use. So, in the past I have often just destroyed things and rebuilt from scratch or, at most, just copy/pasted some docker volumes to a new host. It is something I have been thinking about a bit as I am now hosting more publicly facing things like the anime wiki, the image hosting frontend for the clips I post (they get saved to object storage), and @rikka which uses an sqlite database. I found that setting up rsnapshot to do hourly snapshots of rikka’s database has actually proven very useful for debugging issues (in addition to having a backup) because I can see the history of the database that led to the current state.

It seems like the migration is working as we made it through a Wednesday with no noticeable federation delays at all. Keep up the good work!

wjs018,

most of these requests are from other instances

That makes sense. I think a lot of the large instances have centralized in the EU/Finland due to world being there to avoid the exact issues that caused you to move. Also, instance <-> instance communication is probably way more requests than instance <-> user.

wjs018,

RIP Himmel. This gives a very Shantae vibe to me.

wjs018,

Akane is the absolute best character. She is an immovable force that Aqua keeps running into over and over again. I am a big fan of Aqua X Kana, but Akane is the more interesting character compared to Kana imo.

wjs018,

I recently discovered this series and have enjoyed it. It centers around a pair of girls that enjoy exploring roads that have been abandoned and are no longer used. Each chapter so far has been about a real life road. Also, the first two chapters feature a page of author comments about when they visited the abandoned road. The translation group has also contributed satellite imagery showing where the road is located on the map.

wjs018,

That high five panel surprised me too. With the dramatic perspective and the lack of dialog, it almost felt like it came from Akebi-chan instead.

I think there have been enough signs now to say that they are laying the groundwork for the eventual end of the series. It might be a ways off yet, but the axe has been raised.

I will be sad to see this one go, but it has been going for a long time at this point and I don’t blame the author for wanting to try something new. I still have a lot of Ika Musume to catch up on.

wjs018,

To me, the story felt like it narratively wandered a lot compared to modern works. If the show were made today, I suspect that it wouldn’t have spanned 26 episodes, but would have been trimmed quite a bit. Sometimes I enjoyed the diversions, and sometimes I was just wondering why we were focusing on this or that character. I do think it is better than a lot of other shows from its time though. I think it has proven more memorable than a lot of other 90’s shows I have watched and then completely forgotten about.
