wjs018, to manga in [DISC] The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy at All - Ch. 88

I have fallen behind on a lot of series over the past two weeks as I have been traveling for work. However, I just managed to catch this update before things picked up for the day.

wjs018, to manga in Wolf-chan wa Sumashitai - Volume 1 Cover

I have really liked this series. The chemistry between the main two is simultaneously very weird and compelling.

wjs018, to manga in Atsumare! Fushigi Kenkyuubu by Masahiro Anbe to concluse with its next volume 20

The signs have been there for a little while. I am hoping that they wrap up the White Day story to end things.

I will be looking forward to what they do next. I have loved this series and I am currently reading through Shinryaku, Ika Musume and love that one as well.

wjs018, to anime in Anime Studio Gainax Files for Bankruptcy

Reading through the article, it seems like this case can be chalked up to (likely) criminal mismanagement. I mean…giving huge unsecured loans to company executives while at the same time not paying the royalties you owe to other production committee members. It just sounds like embezzlement with extra steps.

That’s fine, I will leave both up. I would normally have taken this one down pretty promptly, but I have had to spend a lot of time in a cleanroom today for work, so I wasn’t able to use my phone to keep tabs on things.

wjs018, to dungeonmeshi in DISCUSSION: Episode 23

So, I am still traveling for work and having to write this on mobile, so I will have to keep it brief. Side note, this is the first time I had to trigger rikka’s post via mobile, so I had to find an ssh client and get things like keys sorted. Really glad I got that all sorted out the previous day in anticipation of this because it took way longer than I thought it would.

Senshi’s backstory was tragic, but at the same time it was kind of touching. His crew just really wanted to take care of him until the very end. Also, don’t think I missed that their group’s horse was named Anne…the same name that he gave to the Kelpie that tried to kill him. Probably makes the Kelpie’s betrayal sting all the more.

The random racial rearrangement part of the episode was interesting. I am not really sure where this aspect of the story is going to go. It doesn’t seem like a solution is immediately forthcoming, so they might be stuck with this arrangement for a while. Perhaps switching back could make for a good season finale event? Looking forward to see what happens with the crew’s new makeup and how they work together.

This got a chuckle out of me.

It seems like Askan has the shojo sparkle vision, so we know where that is going. Looks like the capture target is entering the picture next chapter.

wjs018, to manga in [DISC] Oshi no Ko — Ch. 151 — CATCH BALL

That last page…

She has no way of knowing how incredibly complicated the topic of Aqua’s favorite idol actually is. Would it be the young Ai that inspired his patient? How about the one that fought to raise a family despite the incredible repercussions that would happen if it came to light? Perhaps the sister that he grew up with and strove to follow in her late mother’s footsteps? Or, would it be the reincarnated patient of his that finally achieved her dream, once impossible?

My point is that if Kana manages to become Aqua’s favorite, then he will have truly fallen head over heels for her.

wjs018, to manga in Renge and Naruto! (Renge to Naruto!) - Chapter 14

So, I wonder if this is going to translate to Shinji making changes at his work. Perhaps a gyaru-inspired makeover? Nothing seems to get Renge down, but I wonder if we might eventually get some of the story beneath the cheery exterior.

wjs018, to manga in [DISC] Slime Saint - Chapter 13

I loved how she was drooling over eating the poisoned cookies. She reminded me a lot of Maomao from Apothecary Diaries and how she always wanted to experience poison firsthand.

Also loved the dent and mustache on the slime chief.

wjs018, (edited ) to manga in [DISC] Damedol to Sekai ni Hitori Dake no Fan - Ch. 26

What a great chapter. I loved the parting of the sea, but then to immediately follow it up with a point blank confession (as a fan) was fantastic. The whole world is now acting as his wingman. I am pretty sure the other diehard fans would throw down at this point to make sure Kimiya can be front and center with them.

wjs018, (edited ) to manga in Manga Questions, Recommendations, and Discussion Thread [Week 23]

I have been traveling a lot lately (and continue to do so), so I haven’t gotten a chance to read as much as I would like. One thing I mentioned last week is that I have been reading through Tengoku Daimakyou again to get caught up and I am continuing to absolutely love the hell out of it. I am currently on Volume 9, so I am hoping to finish getting caught up this week.

I haven’t been able to do too much in the way of scanning for new series this week, so I only have one new series that I found interesting enough to check out:

  • Mousou Sensei - This is a SOL about a teacher that is constantly thinking that her students are lusting over her and each other. However, her delusions don’t really match up with the reality of just a bunch of quirky students doing totally normal things. This is basically a whole series built around the misunderstanding normal things as suggestive trope (think Tsuki from Uzaki-chan). I think the joke would get old if the chapters were longer, or if there were more chapters out that I had binged my way through. However, I thought it struck a good balance at the moment, but the joke could get old or not be to everybody’s taste.

Weekly ranking roundup:

  1. Anime Corner - Full Results - Weekly Winner: Wind Breaker
  2. Anime Trending - Full Results - Weekly Winner: Konosuba
  3. Reddit Karma - Weekly Winner: Mushoku Tensei

Credit to /u/Abysswatcherbel for making the chart for reddit karma and /u/Nooble5 for the Anime Trending chart.

Like I mentioned earlier, I haven’t really gotten to watch much this week. However, I have noticed Wind Breaker consistently climbing up charts this season, culminating in topping AC this week. Seems like a show worth checking out in the future when I get a chance.

wjs018, to anime in Anime Questions, Recommendations, and Discussion Thread [Week 23]

I have been and continue to be traveling at the moment, so my watch time has been limited, and this post will be short. I have even fallen behind on many weekly shows that I normally watch. However, to try to restore a weary brain, I tried watching Squid Girl, and I have some thoughts.

For context, I am currently reading my way through the manga, and I absolutely love this series. It is such a silly, no-stakes SOL; which I thought would be perfect after a long day of work/travel. However, I found that the anime version just wasn’t doing it for me. I much preferred just reading a couple chapters of the manga over watching it play out on screen.

I have struggled to pinpoint what about the anime I haven’t been able to connect with. Overall, it seems like a competent adaptation. The jokes are there, the voice work seems fine, the animation doesn’t really stick out as a problem either. I suspect that it is probably just the fact that I love the manga so much that the anime was never really going to live up to that with a straightforward adaptation. It would need some kind of transformative adaptation (eg Bocchi the Rock) to make it fresh.

All that said, I think this is where I landed: if you haven’t read the Squid Girl manga, then the anime is probably going to serve its job. However, if you already know/love the manga like me, then the anime isn’t really adding anything.

wjs018, to manga in [DISC] Akebi-chan no Sailor Fuku - Vol. 14 Ch. 76 - You Should be the First, Komichi - MangaDex

I know this wasn’t the focus of this chapter, but I just want to mention how much I like the ponytail look for Erika. It helps her character stand out more from all the other Rubai girls.
