@tanepiper And to clarify, that also means that it's a transitive verb to you, as in, "to discipline someone"? (I ask because when used as a verb, I don't recall ever having heard it used intransitively.)

@jamesbritt Point taken, though I will add that as a non-native speaker I was never taught the phrase "part of speech" to comprise categories like noun, verb, adjective. 🙂

(I know that the phrase, in English, is correct; I just don't think its specific meaning is known to the majority of EFL learners.)

I wish tcpdump had a mode like ip netns exec.

As in, "tcpdump <options> <filter-expression> <command>", which would set up the packet capture, run <command> once it's ready to receive, and tear it down as soon as soon as <command> has exited.

@mattcen Alternate: ability to run a command in tracing mode. As in, launch command, send SIGSTOP, do the library equivalent of fuser(1) to see what sockets the process uses, then set up capture for traffic to/from that, then send SIGCONT. Tear down capture when process exits. (That's all probably very racey though; I'm positively handwaving here.)

Are any of you aware of an attack vector that involves flashing a host PCI device's firmware from a VM using SR-IOV? Like, is that a thing?

I think there would be safeguards in place that allow certain kinds of access only when actually accessing the whole device (HCA, or whatever), and disallow them while using just a VF, and that such safeguards would include blocking any access to the firmware EEPROM. But I'm not sure exactly how those work, and whether there are ways to circumvent them.

@manawyrm @isotopp The context is, of you're running some kind of virtualization infrastructure and you're considering adding SR-IOV to your feature set, is this an attack vector that your security people must consider?
