A couple friends are having difficulties with visa applications to go to @djangoconeurope I've tried to reach out on slack, one has tried to email with no response.

Is there anyone out there that can be available and wouldn't mind answering some questions? I have no experience with this so I'm not sure what to advise them.

Blind Sonos users have an important and rare opportunity to make our presence felt and our displeasure heard about the massive regression in the new mobile apps.

Next Tuesday 14 May between 2 and 5 PM US Eastern time, three senior Sonos staff are conducting an “ask me anything” (AMA) session in the Sonos community. In attendance will be Diane Roberts, Senior Director of Software Development, Kate Wojogbe, Senior Director of User Experience, and Tucker Severson, Director of Product Management.
These are the key people in the company who agreed to the app being released in the inaccessible state it’s in, and they are the key people who need to take fixing it seriously.
Many people want to take some action that makes a difference. This is something you can do.
You can bookmark the page for the AMA. It is, https://en.community.sonos.com/events/sonos-app-redesign-ama-6

Try to become familiar with the forum before Tuesday, because while it isn’t completely inaccessible, it’s not the best and a little quirky. You should be able to sign in with your Sonos ID.
Perhaps compose your question thoughtfully ahead of time and have it on your computer, so you can paste it into the AMA when it goes live. It will not hurt for Sonos to understand how upset and inconvenienced many of us are by what they have done. We can do that firmly while remaining polite.
They need to understand, the best way to make us go away is to fix what they broke. We won’t be quiet until we get back what they took from us.
Happy contributing.

So, probieren wir mal was.

Wanted to reference files from more than one directory anyway? We had a tool for that: it was called "SYMLINKS"

"Hello I would like different permissions on this file based on path" They have played us for absolute fools

offf, this story about how Google made google search into a pile of seagull shit hits me hard:

https://www.wheresyoured.at/the-men-who-killed-google/

Around the time of this story, I was living through a similar situation in my work life (on a much smaller scope, of course, WordPress.com first, Tumblr later).

Back in 2019, working on WordPress, I started finding myself, almost weekly, arguing against people who wanted to take the product we were working at and made it worse if that mean they could squeeze 0.1% more revenue from it

The 0.1% figure is not even a random number: I remember this speciffic A/B test on WordPress.com that was declared a success and shipped to 100% of the users because it increased the free-to-paid conversion by 0.1%. Soon after it was released, I found out that as a side effect, it increased the churn of free users by 20 something %,so I called for an urgent rollback and removal of the change. So I was promptly explained that we didn't care about free-users churn, because finance had calculated the average long-term value of the free users to be something like $2 per year, and the increase in conversion was bigger than what we could get from them.

Everything became about growth hacking. Everything became thinly-veiled dark patterns. In our private dev slack channels, we joked that since it was impossible to make it smaller or less conspicuous, the next thing the growth team was going to ask us to do was to make the 'free plan' button flee away from the mouse pointer when the user tried to click it. We kept making our product worse, we kept consciously crippling the cheaper versions so we could force people to move to the more expensive options.

Back then I was the lead of one of the two dev divisions working on WordPress.com, so my job was mainly to discuss what we were going to be doing, when and how. And I was getting drained by a constant state of fight against a constant wave of shit they wanted us to build. So much than by the end of 2020, the CEO quietly told me to follow the growth team plans and shut up or step down.

So I requested to move to tumblr, because I thought the pastures were greener over there. But it was all the same: Adding login walls to what we were pretending to be "the last bastion of the free internet", cramping in embarrasingly obvious money-making schemes disguised as features, and making them silently opt-out instead of opt-in so the less people the possible would deactivate them, having to fend off the pressure from the CEO to make everything algorithmic timelines because, you know, tiktok makes a lot of money and why aren't we, etc etc.

I found myself in a place where building something good that people enjoy using was no longer a priority, but tricking people into generating more money for the company was. And when I looked around me, I could see that happening everywhere else, not only in my company. Experiencing the start of the enshittification years from inside wasn't easy.

And, as in the article, the people who decided to turn the shit-metter up to 200%, have a name, in every case. And these people, no matter if they are called Sundar and Prabhakar or Matt and Mark, are destroying the internet. These people are milllionaires, or billionaries, and are destroying our shared, common spaces to squeeze some extra cash from us.

That's why the fediverse and its principles are important. Because that's how we take back internet from their dirty hands. That's how we make internet resilient against them. That's how we build the commons.

"Well I wouldn't start from here"

"Catch a bus, the driver will know"

"Why do you want to go there xxx is better"

"You are using the wrong shoes, try £5000 worth of wellingtons"

"My friend once walked to somewhere else"

"Don't walk trains are better"

"Turn right before you get to the bridge"

"Never heard of xxx "

"Read the f%£%%$g map!"

I'm sick of justifying ethical behavior in terms of profit. We use phrases like "adding alt-text brings more customers to your site" or "protected bike lanes increase revenue for local businesses."

You should add alt-text descriptions to images because it helps people.

We need to build bike lanes because it makes cities safer and more accessible.

Reduce carbon emissions because it's the right thing to do! Discussing these things in purely economic terms misses the point.

I don’t know how often free labor is requested by most folks in tech but it sure is requested a lot from people who focus on accessibility.

To put it simply, I do not accept unpaid work, and my peers in this space also do not.

Please be mindful that our time is valuable too, just like anyone’s.

The bike shop I work at, , just got back to me to tell me that they are going ahead with their policy of installing cameras in the shop to monitor employees. They say these are not used to track productivity, but the CEO is a union busting ex-Amazon executive and he has given himself that power, so that's enough for me. My last day will be mid-May and I am now properly desperate to find a new job before I loose my house. Leads in the bike or software industry welcome in or around .
