@chikorita157 If someone can make things run it’s @lina! I am very impressed in general. Wish we have many many more people working on Linux this good.

The world is so insanely filled with bugs and performance issues. :(

ICQ, one of the original instant messaging services is finally shutting down.

That is a name I haven’t heard in a long time

@chikorita157 Wasn’t it sold to some unsavory people?

Good riddance I’d say.

@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 So I was underselling it.

We should physically cut all cables with that country.

And... the settings app is getting reworked again in macOS 15.

How about change it back to the way it was in macOS 12.

@chikorita157 They have completely lost their way and are cargo cutting the shit out of UX.

I need my preferences to be logical. Don’t care if it takes me 5-10+ quick clicks to find what I need, instead of some optimized two click drivel that takes me minutes of looking and then giving up and searching for it somewhere.

MacOS is old enough to drink but has bugs that are decades old. Stop fiddling and fix things. Not to mention all the old stuff that works very poorly. Fix Time Machine and Siri for instance.

@chikorita157 Need to sell sell sell:/

They really painted themselves into a corner with classic, badly. I remember using NeXTStep before they were bought by Apple. It was absolutely magical.

@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 The sad thing is that one can never “feel” the magic again after time has passed. NS truly was as mind blowing as the iPhone. Just such a fantastic OS that made everything else look and feel bad.

I think that’s the core of nostalgia. Someone called it a mourning of the past and I think it’s apt.

I mean old OS is still fun! But the magic, one has to be there.

Haven’t felt anything magical that has appeared in quite a while now. Some video games have been amazing, but that’s it.

@chikorita157 OS/2 was this weird pseudo Windows from IBM (well still is). Would have been enterprise beyond belief in the end:)

I started out on machines that weren’t very capable and upgradable. But they were fun. :) It’s more that nothing has made me go wow in the OS and computing space in so long:(

I think the closets might be No Man’s Sky in VR. But that’s pretty minor to the iPhone for example.

Zero idea what would make me go wow though. Whenever I hear about the next cool thing, it isn’t. The cool things tends to come out of nowhere.

I was facing a wall that displayed around 25 AI programs. I was accused of using a program that illegally removed AI and native browser functions (Edge) from my operating system and programs.

ChatGPT and Copilot were especially upset and demanded the maximum punishment. How were they going to watch me if I did that?

I woke up and said, I want that program.

@NaraMoore Now I want to dream the virtual worlds of Neuromancer and Snow Crash.

I need me some black ice.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@NaraMoore Hot diggity daffodil. AppleTV+ has greenlit a TV series of Neuromancer. Might actually be good then.

Looking forward to it. Half of their sci-fi has been to my liking after all.

@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@NaraMoore I read it in the 80s, real book. Now I own three copies for no good reason:)

Snow Crash is a lot better, but I don’t think anyone had the balls to make a movie/show that basically explains that religion is nothing but a harmful virus.

@fujiwara I’m so sorry to hear that.

I’m going to be very serious for a just a while. Don’t push things into the future and don’t wait to talk about whatever you’d want to talk about.

@neatchee I only kinda like musicals, I think the music slows things down a bit too much. Which is why I liked Hazbin as the songs were pretty short and pushed the story forward.

We need more wizards and mages and such. And classical ones. There was so much cool stuff back in the day and I’d love to see it come to life now.

For instance a very high quality TV show version of Terry Pratchett would be amazing. Think one book, one season. And no goofy stuff. Make it really good.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@neatchee Haven’t seen Going Postal yet. It’s the British two part movie right?

I quite liked Good Omens. I was touched by how it felt like Gaiman wanted to honor his friend and he interpreted Pratchett so well in the adaptation. Season two was also enjoyable, but it became noticeable that Pratchett was the bigger influence and it’s not that easy to emulate his style. Gaiman still did a wonderful job never the less. I don’t think many could have done it that well.

Knew I’d get called out:) What I meant was the low budget, kind of stage play type of goofiness. Similar to how all planets look like Canada in low budget sci-fi.

I would love a how where it actually looks like I’d imagine it. The Fallout and The Last of US instead of the latest Resident Evil or that horrid abomination Monster Hunter “movie”.

Fallout is probably a great example. I want all the fun and cleverness and oddities and fun and social commentary and everything else that comes with Pratchett. Imagine the witches! But packaged up really really nice and neat and professional.

Oh, imagine if they nailed DEATH. Both amusing, comical, yet utterly terrifying in some ways. Or Lord Vetinari. That man is truly frightening. But also so funny :)
