@paintedsky Unfortunately self hosting is a inescapable disaster. https://cfenollosa.com/blog/after-self-hosting-my-email-for-twenty-three-years-i-have-thrown-in-the-towel-the-oligopoly-has-won.html

I've also tried hey.com (as a paid customer). Was attracted to the opinionated stance as well. Ended up not enjoying it.

Moved to Protonmail (and VPN, and drive, and etc) a while ago. Vanilla, but does everything I need.

@paintedsky Ah, makes sense. I do custom domain as well. Heard good things about Fastmail too so probably a safe bet.

@Fizzychicken The difference between "try not to fail" vs "try to succeed"

@codinghorror Weirdly, I grew up watching movies or series with subtitles (couldn't understand spoken English at the time), and nowadays I'm the opposite of the author's observation: I always turn subtitles off.

It seems a lot of places put them on by default; I swear YouTube keeps turning CC on for me.

Another sign that I'm getting old is that my approach to software updates went from "don't download updates for me, don't even attempt to tell me an update is available, I'll actively ip-block update servers, and review every little detail before I eventually update manually" to "just download the update in the background and apply it at next start, I don't care, I don't even want to have to click a simple confirmation button".

Reminder: I love using Fork as a visual Git tool. Simple, efficient, and with a fair business model (you pay for it, simple as that). Couldn't recommend it more. Much admiration for the developers.

I love open source and believe OSS applications are usually of higher quality than closed alternatives, but it does have a monetization problem that makes projects hard to sustain.

So I'm particularly happy when I see an application that does something well. I'll gladly pay for it (regardless of whether it's closed source or not) so the authors can focus on creating a good app, rather than trying to monetize in weird ways.

Fork is one example, but others exist (Beyond Compare comes to mind).

(I still think lack of any monetization route is what killed SourceTree, which was an app I loved/hated but used daily; not open source, but free).

@AngryAnt True. I used Sublime very little but could feel that sort of commitment in the product.

Comment gold from the Instagram peanut gallery on Humane's TED vaporware launch.

@chrismessina Looks interesting, but in a gimmick kind of way. After their early teasers promising to revolutionize every, I expected more.

Or, let's be honest, was 98% expecting it to be well advertised vaporware.

A deep dive on Andreessen Horowitz's latest "State of Crypto" report. In short: they want people to keep buying crypto, and are not above publishing blatant falsehoods to convince them to do so.

The report itself is 60 pages long, so this is a long one.

I'm going to need all messaging apps ever to let me add notes on contacts.

I have a busy life now, okay? It's not that I don't like people, I just sometimes need reminders what we were up to last week/month/year/decade.

@fasterthanlime That's basically the main feature I miss from ICQ. Every app that you can add people to should have it. (Glad Mastodon does!)
