Generalities:

My favorite pastime is learning.

If something is unconventional it's typically better for it.

Music is crucial and experiencing it is mandatory - be it through listening or creating.

Reducing suffering is the best life goal I've come up with.

If you've never tried a melted slice of cheddar cheese on top of a warm slice of apple pie you really should. When my great aunt suggested it to me I was incredulous, but after I tried it I was beyond thoroughly convinced.

Synthesizers/sound design, music from extreme metal to baroque to pop, learning about anything that interests me (e.g. geography, geopolitics, world history, pop science level physics/astrophysics/paleoanthropology, religions and philosophy), the Godzilla franchise, terrible horror movies, Pathfinder 1E, and a voyeuristic curiosity surrounding conspiracy theories/the paranormal/the occult

Genuinely surprised to see that Eluveitie beats out Celtic Frost.

Edit: Just looked at the stats, and wow, it's not even close: 872,935 to 120,157. That's a real wtf. Insert Principal Skinner "...it's the children who are wrong."jpg

The forums on the metal archives are still active and a good resource for various different things concerning extreme metal. Bits of news, discussion, and some out of left field recommendations that I don't find other places.

The image is actually emblematic of why you're having trouble finding good new music. You're still just looking at the outside of the haystack. In the modern era it's incredibly easy to access good new music, but perhaps more difficult to find that music (based upon your tastes). The prevalence of independent music exploded over 20 years ago. At this point, if you're relying on the vestiges of major labels and popular distribution channels as your tastemakers you're basically doing it wrong.

The drawback is that you may actually have to put in some time and effort to find new stuff you like, but it's definitely out there. Probably much more exists than you have time to consider, really. How much time you're willing to spend searching depends on how important it is to you to find new stuff that you enjoy. Use shortcuts and find a different tastemaker associated with genre's that you like if you want (e.g. online publications, youtube channels, online forums/communities, playlist where they exist, podcast, etc.) You'll have to put in some time to find the relevant ones to you, but perhaps not as much time as combing through new stuff on your own.

Lots of us with interests in genres with an extensive underground scene have been sifting through the mud to find gems for decades already, and I still enjoy the process a lot, though many people might think I waste a lot of time. These days that skillset is transferable and almost a requirement to find the good stuff in any and every genre. Unless you are lucky or don't mind enough that the most commercial stuff is still your jam.

(edit: unless of course this post is more a condemnation of broadly popular tastes in music. I'd have to type more to address that, but I'll save it. It's nothing new, and also hinges on subjectivity.)

I am envious of this man's seeming capability to honestly pursue the path of an actual hero. May the endeavor and fortune of he and his support structures only prove cause for that envy to grow.

Eh, respecting peoples' bodily autonomy isn't that difficult. Not doing so causes way more problems in the world so far as I see it.

Just tried using Google Earth to check for any Taco Bell locations to confirm this. How convenient that it wouldn't let me look anywhere close to Mars. They're keeping something from us!

Kinda neat, but pretty janky. Can't get it to open up in street view.

Ingredients include: whipped cream/Cool Whip, pistachio pudding, mini marshmallows, diced pineapple, and of course chopped pistachios. It's obviously more of a dessert/sweet side dish type of thing. Pistachios alone, though delicious, wouldn't fill the same role.

Midwesterner here. Admittedly, some of these can be... interesting (to be interpreted as passive aggressively as possible). Some can be excellent though. We have a pistachio salad in the family that is a go to, and if I don't control myself I could eat a whole batch.

I've been a fan of the Godzilla franchise for a long time. I'm absolutely stunned to learn that the films don't hold up to scientific scrutiny. I feel lied to, and betrayed. How could they do this‽ Everything is ruined.

This might actually be the most confused I've ever been.

Can we shut up with the "EEE" shit already?

Meta exist to make a profit, however they’re never going to be able to advertise to most people in the fediverse, who also happen to be some of the most knowledgeable people in some fields. If they accept that they’re never going to be able to advertise to those people, they go for the next best thing: monetising their...

Is this actually a "Quiet down about being exploited by a known bad actor!" post, or am I missing something?

Also, why should discussion stop concerning a current, ongoing development in a space where how we choose to interact with that development hasn't yet been set by many on an individual and a community level? Just because you're tired of seeing it, and some people are arriving at a conclusion that may be different than yours?

I personally haven't decided where I stand 100%. Nor have I seen this addressed by the person running my instance on what (if anything) they are considering concerning the entry of Meta into this space. Why on earth would it be warranted for discussion to cease and everyone take it as fate that the behemoth be allowed to roll over a reluctant userbase? This is absurd.

Amélie, for sure.

Even with an element of loneliness/isolation being central to its plot, the storytelling, visual presentation, and performances make this an interminably uplifting movie for me that soothes even on the worst of days.

Is this what the internet felt like? (lemmy.world)

I've been exploring the fediverse and subbing and posting all over the damn place. Realizing lemmy can federate with kbin blew my mind. Not to mention the possibility of turning my old laptop into a personal server to host my own instance. Is this what it felt like to discover how the internet worked in the 90s?

The thing that's mostly missing from this that would make it way more 90's is a background pattern with overlapping circles, squares, lightning bolts, and squiggly lines all in different neon colors. Everything, you see, was EXTREME in the 90's.

I nuked and deleted my main account already. I have an alt with zero posting history that I could conceivably use if I wanted to try and get more people to shift away from reddit, but I have no interest in going back for any other type of activity.

Nuked and deleted my 10 year old account last night, and glad to be rid of it tbh. I'd been wanting a paradigm shift for a while already under whatever circumstance. Quite happy to see the momentum growing for an exodus really.

There are things that I'll remember positively about reddit for sure, but I still look back most fondly to the MySpace days for it's sense of tighter community which is something I never felt through the sea of randoms that flooded reddit. I don't participate on any other major social media sites, though I do have accounts on some individual forums for stuff I'm into. I definitely still have to learn my way around this place a bit. I can't pretend to know how this federated concept will flesh itself out and evolve, but I really think I see some promise for more familiar communities with the way it's structured. We'll see; I'm optimistic.

At any rate, something about how every end is a new beginning or something. If I'm allowed to welcome you though I'm a newborn myself, welcome. Glad we're here.
