Generalities:

My favorite pastime is learning.

If something is unconventional it's typically better for it.

Music is crucial and experiencing it is mandatory - be it through listening or creating.

Reducing suffering is the best life goal I've come up with.

Sure thing. There's a lot to take in, I know. Just keep in mind, as with anything, the more you do it everything will begin to make more and more sense. It's important to get through the process though. When you're able to move through synthesis with intentionality it's like opening up a new world with endless possibilities only bounded by your imagination and the capabilities of the synth you're using.

This isn't a bad video for a beginner. It covers a lot of fundamental concepts. He speaks a bit fast, so slow speed by 10% if you're having trouble following. It's a long video because it covers so much ground, so be ready for that. I hope it helps in your process!

Summoning is one of those bands where you could ask someone which of their albums is their favorite and regardless of their answer it's a good choice.

Last I saw it isn't actually clear whether or not Fadades is parody or legitimate. Very clear in any either case that Fadades is great.

Especially within a genre like black metal where bands will make contra-conventional artistic decisions by way of course as it is, stumbling upon a vibe like this out of honest artistic expression vs. deriving it with a manifest ambiguity where the tongue seems to sprout from the cheek almost hardly matters. However Fadades came to be, it's a monument to whatever it actually is.

I'm going to go with Steven Wilson for this. Mostly because he and Mozart have an undeniable talent, many of their fans consider them to be some type of visionary savant, and despite the broad agreement toward that perspective I still find both of their outputs to be broadly incredibly dull.

Godzilla, rather characteristically, stomps any other answer.

What I mostly see in this article is somebody putting forward some somewhat salient points to bolster their own opinion. That's to say, his is a defensible position to take, but it doesn't stand up to the very real fact that there are so many different opinions within the Godzilla fandom, and what different people prefer in a Godzilla movie, that to try to make a broad generalization like this is in itself folly.

To illustrate this, though he believes audiences are fundamentally disinterested in any human character centric plotline, the single most frequent complaint I have heard from people both inside and outside of the fandom about the 2014 film is that they were disappointed that Brian Cranston's character was killed off too early. To the same effect, I think the article understates the human element in some of the Japanese entries in the franchise.

And to insert some personal bias into this, not only am I in the camp that posits monster fights as not the most important part of a Godzilla film, but I also consider both 2014 and King of Monsters (2019) to be successful American entries into the franchise.

Like I said, so many takes inside the Godzilla fandom. Everybody has a different selection of favorites. This guy's opinion is just one of many.

So glad this movie is doing well. I hope this puts an exclamation point on the sentiment that a global audience wants to see Japanese Godzilla films that Toho will keep in mind. This article states how much more Minus One is grossing over Shin Godzilla, but the Shin Godzilla screenings (in my region anyway) were so limited that this is anything but a surprise.

Minus One is great. I encourage everyone to see it. I'm hoping to catch it again while it's still on the big screen. Goji fans rejoice!

Alter_Id,

Not as good as Shin, but I consider Shin the 2nd best in the franchise, only after '54. Minus One is solid though. If you're at all interested you should check it out.

Wanting to keep my post spoiler free.

I thought it was great. I like every Godzilla movie though. Overall it was a solid entry into the franchise. Closer to the top of the heap than the bottom. Curious to see the varied reactions from the rest of the fandom, since everyone inevitably has different takes depending on what they like out of a Godzilla movie.

I encourage everyone to go see it, mostly to give Toho your money so they know the international market remains eager for more of the big G.

Tristania - World of Glass, and if you like that check out the two albums before it as well.

I think these all merit a mention given what you're looking for. Whether or not they hit square is up to you.

The Fall (2006) - A bit flat in the story department, but this was clearly a film focused on being a feast for the eyes. It succeeds in that handily.

The Great Yokai War - Ever wondered what would happen if Takashi Miike directed The Never Ending Story? This is something like that.

Tuvalu - Almost like if you smashed the aesthetics of Jean Pierre Jeunet and Guy Maddin together. The dialogue is hyper-minimal, but it you can get on board with the overall approach this film is a gem.

Yes, Captain. The contagion seems to be spreading rapidly. Almost as if people are finding the combination appetizing, and are perpetuating the phenomenon by way of potlucks and recipe sharing.

I saw one fly across a road once. It broke my brain until I recognized what it was. Initially I thought it was a leather satchel being blown by the wind like a plastic bag in an updraft. Not exactly a graceful display.

My impression of squabbles after a while was more "feigned whimsy reddit". The people who loved the quirky snu aspect of reddit found their way there. "Oh look, he's wearing a box on his head with a face hole cut out! Ha ha!" - "He's holding a plate with a piece of birthday cake in one hand and a saxophone in the other! What a whacky character!!!" - "He's piloting a rocket ship! Space is amAAAAAzing!!!"

The dev seemed like he was impressively dedicated to improving the platform, but I didn't jive with what I perceived at the time to be the emerging culture there. Nothing offensive about it, but that's not at all what I'm looking for really. I haven't been there any type of regularly for a couple weeks, so not sure if that's still a thing.

Also, I don't pay strict attention to what instances they're coming from, but I've blocked many communities throughout the fediverse that spam memes like they're running out of time or something. I don't think squabbles exclusively lays claim to that type of behavior.

Just my opinion.

I'll give that a firm maybe, depending on how it turns out. :) If it's not a disaster I may throw it out for people to hear.

Our campaign is in a wasteland desert right now and the party inquisitor is being driven mad through hearing voices of some enslaved spirits, so the tone may not be transferrable to everybody's table (lol), but if that sounds interesting I've got some weird ideas I'd like to see if I can get to translate to that vibe.

I'm in a ttrpg group that plays Pathfinder about once a month. We had a session yesterday, and with where we left off I've got some cool ideas for some synth scoring for the next session. I haven't written for the group before, though I've been invited to by the GM since he knows I'm into synths and he usually uses dungeon synth as the background music during play sessions. Planning to get to work on this later today, and I've got probably 5 weeks to get things wrapped. Our sessions usually run 4+ hours, and I think aiming for that run time is overly ambitious, but I'm thinking maybe roughly an hour is the goal. We'll see how easily things progress since what I have in mind is stylistically quite different from what I typically do. Maybe things will flow gang busters and I'll get a lot more out than what I'm anticipating. Hoping this will be a cool surprise for the group.

My local grocery store carries an alternative, Lee Kum Kee brand, that I've found to be adequate. There's some stuff that I eat regularly that sriracha flavor profile works better than anything else, so I'll take what I can get for now. Not having tried the Lee Kum Kee brand before the shortage, I'm eager to actually do a side by side once I can get a bottle of Huy Fong.

Your post bolsters what I've taken away from the looking I've done so far. The feature set seems robust, to the point it's recognizably intended to be the place to set up shop for a central experience amongst different platforms; hence the name I guess. That's probably according to taste though as well. I never had a problem with the type of UX Facebook offered, but I got far away from all that long ago for all the obvious reasons.

I didn't know that creating an account allows for login access onto different instances, but I guess that makes sense and is probably required in order to setup your mirrored/synced account. I may be twisting that around into a way it doesn't actually work, but I'll figure it out. I think I'm going to set up an account between tonight and tomorrow.

I saw that plugins were available. Curious to see how broad and varied the options are for these. I have to imagine there's some good stuff developed that I'll be pleasantly surprised to find.

Thanks for the input!

Into all sorts of extreme metal, which was largely my gateway into more noisy stuff. I highly appreciate the weird, the unique, the dark and esoteric. Willing to weather the inaccessible as long as it brings something to the table.

As far as noisier stuff is concerned... power electronics are good for me, a fair amount of ambient noise and ritual ambient. All of this is dictated by my mood as I hop all over the place when it comes to what I listen to. Always looking for new and different stuff as well, in all genres. The search and when it rewards is a highest pleasure.

Namedrops = stuff like Murmuüre, Theologian, Gruntsplatter, Yen Pox, Funerary Call, DNA, Mars, Swans, Sutcliffe Jugend, Brighter Death Now etc., etc.

Yeah, something nebulously similar has crossed my mind. There's a lot of different directions this could be taken for people with the right technical and organizational skills, creativity and knack for game design. It's a lot to wrap one's mind around, but thoughts are swirling for sure.

With what I'm familiar with there it looks like you're pretty hard in on symphonic metal, and some of the later stuff goes more into different flavors of folk metal. Not necessary to know that to enjoy it at all, but might be useful if you're ever looking for more in the same vein. Good to see more diversification of tastes popping up in the thread though, for sure.
