First, I think Ernest has done a fantastic job and I've been rooting for him this whole time. But it's becoming clear it's all too much for him without the support of a larger team....
When Kbin isn’t working I check out Lemmy but it just feels too cluttered. If I didn’t need to get paid I’d help Ernest out but, ya know, capitalism 🤷♂️
That's actually a huge loss. Facilities where you can feed hundreds of people at a time are invaluable in the sort of humanitarian disaster that Israel is creating.
"I have, like, really given my whole energy and life over the last four months to this job, and to be let go for no reason is like a huge slap in the face from a company that I really wanted to believe in,"
First mistake was giving your whole life. Second mistake was believing in a company.
Having survived a layoff like the one they mentioned - people getting random 15 minute meetings, suddenly seeing their accounts decommissioned, etc. - it definitely sucks, and knowing they'll lay me off like that means I have no reason to have loyalty

Man, if you become a loser in a few months what does that make me since I've been fully remote for six years, and more than 50% remote for eleven years.
Also, here's the problem as defined by Minneapolis:
Gen Z prefers laptop diddling and nasty cat blankets to going out
What does "going out" entail? Visiting a bar and overpaying for drinks in a noisy bar? Overpaying at a restaurant that doesn't even have plates?
Gen Z doesn't have any money. Going out requires money. So unless they're gonna subsidize meals at restaurants, people will stay home and diddle on their laptops because at least that doesn't cost money.
We got rid of pop-up headlights because they were causing pedestrian deaths, but I don't think we'll do anything about these monstrosities because not only are they deadly, they're not fun. And our regulators want to prevent fun more than they want to prevent death.
I don't know why we don't make chicken nuggets out of plant protein regularly now. They don't taste like chicken, they don't have the texture of chicken, and I honestly don't think kids care as long as it's shaped like a dinosaur.

He would be ruthlessly lambasted as an antisemite by the AIPAC-endorsed left and all of the right, and lose the Jewish vote in every swing state, handing the election to Trump in a landslide.
Instead, he's getting ruthlessly lambasted as a genocider by significant Muslim populations in swing states, losing their vote, and handing the election to Trump in the Electoral College.
There are laws in place for service workers related to minimum wage. The employers have to make up the difference if tips don’t meet the rate for hours worked. It seems to me that’s not sufficient for the times....
When I tip I prefer to do so in cash so they can just pocket it. When I was a dishwasher I remember the good, hardworking servers walking out every night with huge roll of bills, and they would go buy groceries without paying taxes on it.
The thing that's keeping me from buying a new EV - apart from price - isn't the electric. It's everything else about the car. I don't like how they look, I don't like the giant touch screens, I don't like the gimmicky features that do nothing but add cost.
Then again, I found out today that I'm a "Harbinger of Failure" so maybe it's a good thing that I'm not buying an EV.

This is part one of enshittification: You give your service away to get users, and cater to their wishes. Then once they're hooked you can do whatever you want because they can't leave.
In the two years I've been writing about Americans' changing relationship to work, there's one theme that's come up over and over again: loyalty. Whether my stories are about quiet quitting, or job-hopping, or leveraging a job offer from a competitor to force your boss to give you a raise, readers seem to divide into two groups....
Even worse, during the Great Resignation, employers effectively penalized employees for their loyalty, offering sky-high salaries to attract job candidates while neglecting their existing staff. As I reported in 2022, veteran employees received salaries that were 7% lower, on average, than new hires.
The biggest raise I've ever gotten in my 20 year career was 10%. The smallest increase in salary from switching jobs was 20%, and that's an outlier. Staying in one job just isn't worth it anymore.
His boss apologized, telling him that the layoffs had nothing to do with him. It was just business.
And there's the problem. Employers are businesses, and no matter how loyal your boss is to you and vice versa, some beancounter will axe your job without a second thought. "Just business" is anathema to loyalty.
Young people need to understand that the point of government is that you don't like it, and you vote for someone you hate the least.
You don't vote for better. You agitate, organize, and commit violence against infrastructure to get better. You become a thorn in their side until they change. (Or they kill you. But either way it's not your problem anymore.)
But better doesn't come from voting. You vote for "less worse" or "more worse" and Biden is very much less worse.
The undemocratic system that we have will suck forever or until it collapses under its own weight. You're not going to get democratic representation out of it. You're not going to get "better." For better you need to get out and wreck shit until they meet your demands.
Biden could strip bare ass naked and do the entire Aristocrats joke while defecating on the Resolute Desk and it wouldn't convince me to vote for anyone else.
Honestly, that would probably make me like him more.
Me going to prison for not paying my taxes will have zero effect on this. Hell, if I immolate myself on the steps of Congress I'll just be a "troubled individual."
