Hi all. I'm a refugee from Reddit, but I'm having a really hard time understanding some of the terminology/setup here. I've read a faq (which I can't find anymore), but it just used the same confusing terminology that I don't understand, so I'm hoping someone can answer my questions:
I'm seeing that I shouldn't have created an account here, but on another site? (Fedia or something like that). I read that Kbin was a good place to go, so I tried Kbin.com, which doesn't exist? Then I googled it and it brought me here to kbin.social. Is this a temporary site until kbin.com is up and running?
I don't at all understand what the federation stuff is all about. I just want one site where I can go and post/read/aggregate news. Can someone explain that to me in very laymans terms?
Also, I'm confused here. I wanted to make a new post to "RedditMigration" but it isn't creating a new 'Thread' (is that the same thing as a post?) If not, I didn't see an option to create a new thread, so how do I go about doing that?
@rodhlann Okay, except I'm not seeing an option to create a thread anywhere. At the top of the navigation bar is the plus sign, if I hover over it I see 'Add a new link', 'Add a new article', 'Add new photo', 'Add new post', 'Add new video', 'Create new magazine'.
In order to have this conversation, I clicked 'Add new post' thinking it would create a new... well, post, on the 'RedditMigration' subreddit (Magazine), but it instead did this. So who can actually see this/find this?
Sorry, I'm very technically unfamiliar with this kind of thing. I understood Reddit because it more or less seemed like a slightly more complex messsage board/forum, but this is something else entirely. I don't have twitter or anything, just used Reddit.
So, I came here from reddit with the migration. I'm not understanding what any of that means. What is an instance? Do I have to goto those sites and sign up for accounts there? Should I delete my account here?
I'm very much not technically inclined when it comes to this stuff.

I'm not sure I understand why "Threads" and "Microblogs" are separate entities in kbin. From my understanding, "Threads" are like Reddit's link/image posts and "Microblogs" are like text posts. Why are these only viewable in separate tabs? It seems like a bad thing to completely separate certain content from the same Magazine and make it unable to view everything at once. Am I misunderstanding something?
I have the same question as @bleuy007, as a Reddit refugee. I don't have twitter or any other account, just used Reddit for 13 years until today. You say that the 'Threads' are articles, links, media entries and that the 'microblog' is like a text comment. How then, when I look at the 'Threads', are people posting purely text-based posts there? When I goto the navigation bar at the top, under the + symbol I have "Add new link", "Add new article", "Add new photo", "Add new post", "Add new video", and "Create new magazine". I clicked on 'Add new post' and typed one out, but it created a 'Microblog' instead of a "thread" and I didn't see any option to choose....
kbin.social is getting the hug of death right now, consider signing up for another instance
Hey Reddit refugees! You may have noticed that kbin.social is taking forever to load because of all of the traffic it's getting....
Reddit refugees, check in
Just breaking the ice, that's all :-)
