Rolling release 🤷🏻‍♂️ there might be updates which cause issues where you might need to rollback, if you can handle that it shouldn‘t be a problem.

I‘m using Arch myself since about 2 months and never happened that an update break something for me - when something broke it was my own fault.

got told to crosspost over here to reach more people:

I don't know if and how crossposting functions in kbin/lemmy, so hopefully it'll work that way

@rufus

thanks for taking the time. I already asked over at the asus-linux discord about the issue but got no reactions up until now.

Turn off Safe Boot and features that inhibit booting other operating systems and USB media in your BIOS.

did already, unfortunately not working

Get the installer running. Try the failsafe and fallback video mode options.

all installers (except nobara) do fail when trying to get the bootloader installed, since efibootmgr seems to be in need of the acpi options and I don't get it running with acpi option on.

Tackle one problem at a time. Google it. Add your hardware in question (“Asus Strix G15”) and error message or exact issue (“black screen”) to your query.

that's exactly what I'm trying to do, first and most important (from my understanding) would be to get the OS booted from the USB with acpi on. I am going through google/DDG/qwant/whatever-search-engine to look it up and tried everything I was able to find in relation to my Hardware, but wasn't able to tackle the issue up until now, that's why I'm asking for help all over the reddits/lemmys/kbins/discords...

I can get Nobara - and only Nobara - installed so I can boot without USB, but there as well only with acpi off.

I tried with Fedora, Nobara, ubuntu LTS, pop!_os, GarudaOS, silverblue, Mint, with everyone having the issue not being able to boot without acpi=off and getting to a black screen and USBs (seem) powered off right after choosing the OS in grub.

appreciate your time replying, thank you.

Ok I nearly lost hope, since not being able to figure it out.

PLEASE. SEND. HELP.

_ First: this might gonna get a long one, but I‘m desperately looking for help!
Second: I‘m a total newb on Linux, so I have really limited Linux know-how.

Specs:
Asus ROG Strix G15DS-R7700X088W
AMD Ryzen 7 7700X
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070
2x 1TB SSDs; 1x M2 NVME with W11 running, 1x SATA

Goal:
Running Dual Boot with W11 on the first, M2 SSD (already running fine) and Linux (Nobara preferred) on the second, SATA SSD

Distros I tried:
Nobara 39
Fedora 39
Fedora 38
Ubuntu 22.04
Pop!_OS

Problem I run into:
I can‘t boot even from the LiveUSB without the „acpi=off“ option. If I do, I get just a black Screen (with Backlight still on) or, if I get into the Grub options first, there‘s only „booting command list“ visible but nothing else happens (even with „quiet“ disabled, no info on the Screen at all).
One thing I noticed, since my Keyboard, Mouse and Mousemat (Razerfly) have lighting, when I try to boot without the acpi=off, they go dark. And stay dark. With acpi=off the keyboard alone goes dark but then lights up again after 2-3 seconds.
If I run it with acpi=off, I can boot and install, but I then have to boot every time with acpi=off. This leads to the graphics driver not being recognized by the OS and running always in 1024x768 „software rendering“ resolution (even with proper drivers installed and enabled and nouveau on blacklist). So just let „acpi=off“ enabled isn‘t an option.

I did, after researching for several hours, try with various other options (nomodeset, acpi=ht, pci=biosirq, noapic, nolapic, and so on, tried a ton of those) but nothing did the trick - always black screen of death without acpi=off.

I did update my BIOS to the latest Version (306), did try every possibilty of options enabled/disabled (Fast Boot, Secure Boot, IOMMU, acpi settings in BIOS, secondary on-board Graphics,…) with no change.

Since I ran out of options (in relation to my google and reddit search skills), knowledge (total newb on Linux) and possibility to ask friends (that know more about linux than me), I‘m desperate enough to ask for help.

You are my last hope, before giving up on Linux with my PC.

If someone has an idea I could try or even a solution, I‘d be endlessly thankful!

If I missed some info or something is needed, don‘t hesitate to as for specific details._

Pass isn‘t yet polished and there are bugs here and there showing up. Also the AutoFill doesn‘t work 100% of the time. And there are features missing like e.g. being able to upload attachements.

Considering the age of Pass vs 1Password, there is way to go for Pass. I made the switch, nevertheless, and once I got used to Pass, it‘s not that bad from my Point of view.

Surely the „create Alias‘ on the fly“ is a big plus, ehich I absolutely love and wouldn‘t want to miss anymore

It‘s e2ee and open source, so I‘d be not concerned regarding Proton‘s side.

Keep your Account safe, your passwords long and complex and use 2FA sort of things and you should be fine, I‘d say

I have nothing else to ask in this community..... how did I get here? 🤔 (upload.wikimedia.org)

For the past year, I’ve been immersed in the topic of Privacy. I switched to Linux, flashed my phone to LineageOS, changed all my software to one that respects privacy, switched my family and most* friends to Signal, started hating megacorporations and pretty much every government in the world, asked a lot of questions on...

Everything makes sense to me now. I’m a privacy guru. How to move on? What’s the next step? 😁

let me quote from reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/15luwua/comment/jvd0fz9/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3):

The article doesn't link the original court filing or discuss what actually happened, and from the title alone, is rather misleading.

The actual warrant can be found here and has the important missing details: https://drive.proton.me/urls/57QC5F26BW#nseYl6ICaQHm

The only data we could provide (in response to a binding Swiss legal order), was the user's recovery email address, which the user added himself, and is optional to begin with.

Unfortunately, said user also used that recovery address to create a Twitter account, and Twitter turned over his phone number and IP address. So probably not the smartest move if you want to threaten public officials.

Coincidentally, this case again proves that Proton Mail's encryption cannot be bypassed by law enforcement.

You had to dig deep to get a news from 2021. and still, private doesn‘t mean anonymous, idk why everyone relates the both.
And still, no news here, Proton explained this case several times and they‘ve been pretty transparent.

and the other one regarding the clima activist:

Varen,

agreed on that, but I think, before that would be, don't try to threaten ppl on the internet and don't expect to be anonymous by just using a private service. I mean, the mail might be encrypted, but the recipient gets it, can read it and can show it to anyone else.
still: private ≠ anonymous

Varen,
Varen avatar

Mhh that sounds promising ^^

Varen,
Varen avatar

Thinking about starting over there… will the instance stay after the release? Or should I better wait until custom instances are available on the app?

Varen,
Varen avatar

the Cert just confirms, that the domain your accessing is belonging to who owns it. When you signup for a cert at LetsEncrypt, you have to run a script on the source, which confirms as your domain.
You wouldn't be able to get a Cert for e.g. amazon.com - because you wouldn't be able to run that specific script on the source and so LetsEncrypt couldn't confirm if that domain really is yours or not. And that's as well the reason, why not trust everyone,

Varen,
Varen avatar

I use it since 2016, but with my own domain, so can't really speak for the "@ proton" domains
But I never had trouble accessing it in a foreign country, it worked flawless

@protonmail
idk what happened today, but seeing Pass repeatedly saying my Vault would be empty, made me like 20 years older.
Fortunately it works again now, but I definitely lost a few hairs today...
(And yes, I did report it…)

Varen,
Varen avatar

True.
Then with Proton (idk about tutanota) you should be able to mail E2EE with them, since you can import their Public Keys into Proton. It's not just "E2EE Proton2Proton", since Proton uses PGP, you can safely mail E2EE with anyone using PGP.

I'm trying to learn Python for the n'th time and keep failing at the same thing - problem solving. I understand syntax and all, but I have too few tasks to improve my problem solving skills with Python. Are there any sites which provide easy tasks to solve with Python? Or any tips on how else I can improve this skill?
